Yeah, it’s a great time to score waves without the crowds due to tourism taking a nosedive this past year. Not so good for the local economy. Thanks for sharing your positive experience, and spending your vacation in Pavones.

That’s a really nice video coverage . Cool thing is I have the board she’s riding, 13 months now , its the Torq 9 ft Horseshoe. Great to see another surfer ride it with style . Gives me ideas and to see how good of a board it is . Been about 10 days before infamous 911 , was the one an only time I rode Pavones for a couple of days on my funshape. Was the swell that was double over head and clean. What an epic surf trip we had. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀

@@unaola Not sure, we had to stay in Dominical town. There wasn't really anywhere to stay then at Pavones and we had to drive over there. Dominical didn't even have tarmac roads and Thrusters was attached to the cabinas and not where it was in 2003. Mike and Grace owned and rans San Clemente and the cabinas too. When I went back 5 years later in 2003, I couldn't believe how much it had changed in that short space of time. I expect I'd barely recognise the area these days

How often do swells like this hit pavones or other spot in Costa Rica? What others spots in the world offers constant conditions like this one to big fun surf everyday? Thinking on moving some day to live in some place like that... Thanks!
@unaola
@unaola 3 жыл бұрын
Rio Claro de Pavones sits inside the Golfo Dulce and is completely shielded from North and west swells by the Osa Peninsula and is only capable of receiving South and South westerly swells. It also has a huge tidal swing of 2-3 meters, and although the winds are generally not very strong, they can turn unfavorable quickly. This makes for a fairly fickle surf break most of the time. That being said, if you have the right equipment you can get surf year round, but you have to temper expectations. For me, it gets as big and perfect as I want often enough to keep me stoked, and it’s consistent enough to keep me dialed in on the smaller days. Costa Rica is exposed to wide swell window on the Pacific coast, making for consistent surf along much of the more exposed coastline. Beach breaks are good year round, but can start to close out on bigger swells, when the abundant reefs and point breaks stat fo fire. Take a look at Google Earth and you’ll see plenty of places that are exposed to sufficient swell to satisfy your desire for surf. There is a whole world out there to explore and find your perfect spot.

Yeah, that can be a common occurrence here as unskilled beginners tend to get over confident in the smaller conditions, and often find themselves in situations where they feel forced to ditch their boards because they can’t make it around the set waves. Learn the proper protocol to avoid collisions, stay alert, and err on the side of caution when your skills don’t match up to the situation at hand. Avoid getting in the way of others, and please control your surfboard. I’ll bet that person doesn’t have a clue how close they came to taking Anna out with their board.

It does get bigger. The waves in this video look like they're breaking only on the inside section. When it's breaking outside and connects to the inside, the waves are substantially larger and you can ride that thing for what seems like a mile. It's one of the (if not the) longest left waves in the world when it's on.
