good working with a young dog. A very good indicator of her giving a certain positive, is how you can see her step back and look around to think, then go back in and starts using her paws to clear the brush... The Dutch/Malinois mix is know for their incredible S&R abilities. Smelling corpses in water, working long hours. But their will to please the master is greater than their sense of self-preservation, so the handler has to be always very cautious and conscious to not make the dog cross their limits. They would literally work themselves to death without ever showing fatigue until it's too late to save them.

When I do scentwork with my dog i put his scentwork harness on (one that I only use when he doing scentwork). I find it helps remind him that he's in work mode. Also means if we are working near a road i can clip him onto a long line and keep him safe, or if he is being cantankerous and isn't searching carefully I can control him more easily and get him to work more methodically. When we work the long line is on and off frequently , particularly if we're in an area with other distractions or dangers.

Enjoyed the video!!! Have mink never been in the other holding cages like the ones you used for the rabbit? Either way that’s a heck of a nose on her! Next time maybe we can have a “double blind” test if you will? I. E. Have someone else hide the mink so Sherni cannot pick up on any changes in your tone or body language since even you aren’t sure exactly where it is. Really like how she stuck with the mark after multiple commands to track the mink!! Also the Slow mo’s / pointing out to our novice eyes when her body language clearly changed!!
@JosephCartertheMinkMan5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will be in the final stages of training. In these beginning stages we are both learning. She is learning to use her nose and to look for what I ask her to find. I am learning to read her body language so I can tell how she acts when she is on the correct scent and the wrong ones.
