3 pound is more than a steal for that piece of equipment, even in the Netherlands we pay around 15 to 30 euro's for one. I worked with the poncho for years and loved it as a quick set up(with some spinners) and could quickly break it down in case of an alarm or attack. I also love the fact that if you have 2 you can attach them together to make a bigger shelter.

It has potential to replace anyone's tent, paired with a lightweight bivvy bag.....

Welcome back… I’ve got the old olive 58 pat poncho and it’s an essential piece of kit for sure.

Although the idea of a sil-nylon appeals to me, it functionality is pretty poor. The 58 I looked into a few years ago, and would best suit a bushcrafter rather than a lightweight soloist trekker.

@@bexbugoutsurvivor totally agree but like that you can wear as a poncho and double up for a shelter (and button two together)...im thinking of getting a dd tarp as a backup rather than going down the surplus shelter route.

Thank you for a nice and practical video (as usual 🙂) I’ve got one Dutch army poncho but very heavily used with almost no inner PU coating. Maybe you have any practical advice on how to waterproof this piece of nice gear?
@stevegrew6758

waterproof spray !...the dutch one is dpm (pattern)? I waterproofed my 58 pattern olive one and it's much better (its old but still works).
@bexbugoutsurvivor

I would usually just Nikwax or Fabsil with a brush and gun....kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZPVl5pvipWbgsU Remove older PU first, perhaps by placing the poncho in a pillow case, and put in a warm tumble dryer.

@@bexbugoutsurvivor Thanks a lot! Looked at the vid and now it is clear how to waterproof it. Peeled and completely removed the old PU coating and now should wait for sunny days to waterproof the poncho :)

Great video but have some questions about the stakes you're using. This is what they look like to me which nothing wrong with them just have a question about them is all. They look like the aluminum stakes that come with some of the tarps with the exception that maybe the crooked ends were frozen with propane to allow them to be bent like having the eye of a needle so they would not break while bending. This allows using paracord too be used to hold the mitten hook and then sharpen the end that goes into the ground. Any way that is what it looks like to me and would be a real money saver DIY if it is so. Thanks for Sharing. Stay Safe. Stay Healthy.

I have owned only about half a dozen ponchos over the the last 30 or so years. The Dutch poncho is the best IMHO. The deciding factors I think the Dutch army poncho is ideal is, the grommet and mounting fixtures are in the right places to make a verity of configurations. Also the overall size has a good amount of coverage, and it's durability surpasses other ponchos. It also is lighter than my USMC Ripstop poncho, and have since given up on using my Sil-nylon poncho, although sil-nylon is compact and lightweight, is fails as a shelter or a wearable unit. Two Dutch ponchos can be pop studded together to make a floorless pyramid tent, (usually working on a buddy system) but could also have application as a soloist.....bex

got one ... actually have more ponchos than i can count off the top of my head, they are great ... very multi-functional, dutch ones are probably one of the best although many are showing their age and de-laminating (not found a fix for this, any thoughts?) so worth checking the inside,

I have tried a few ponchos, sil and ploy ripstop. The Dutch version has been the best I have had in a long time... Could you perhaps heat up the poncho in a tumble drier to remove the original laminate, then (Fabsil) it. Not tried this myself, but this would be my first approach perhaps. Thanx for watching...bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor .... I’ve seen stormsure being used to reproof small areas, but it wouldn’t be economical to use it on a large area. You did a video on fabric paint that waterproofed (some time ago) ... I bought some, sprayed a Russian canvas poncho and it worked well, (is still working)
