I heard the horror stories from my parents and grandparents, all whom were suffering through WWII. From this Dutchie, to all the WWII veterans... Thank you, thank you so much for helping in the liberation of my country. We won't forget. To all the families that lost their loved ones in the Netherlands during this time, We will take good care of them and honor them. They might not be at home, they have a home with us forever.

This was so touching, it made me shed tears. Thank you to your countrymen for taking such wonderful care of our men and women. They truly have an extended family in Margraten. As the granddaughter of a WW2 vet, you all have my sincerest gratitude. 🙏

@@historygal7 From what I've heard, our countrymen who fell over there haven't spent a single Christmas Eve alone since the end of the war. It's a tradition for Dutch families to visit their graves on Christmas Eve

Dutch male here. Visited this when I was a young boy in the ‘80s. Learned respect and gratitude for our liberators. Even when current us politics is turning to fascism, we will never forget the sacrifices of those who fought against it and liberated our country!

What’s more amazing? Netherlands families have done this for Canada and Britain soldiers as well who were killed liberating Netherlands. Schoolchildren often visit the cemeteries and decorate graves. At Christmas Eve, Children lead a candlelight vigil at all these cemeteries and every soldier’s grave has a candle placed upon it. Our dead are remembered with honor in Netherlands. This matters so much.🇺🇸🇱🇺

Canadian here: I'm 32yrs old and I only learned all of this about you and your country in the last year or two! Also, what OP was too humble to mention: You can't just sign up and become responsible for taking care of one of the graves because, AFAIK, there's a literal WAITING LIST!! I have no words...

@@robvoncken2565 This will never ever be forgotten, even our youngest children here in primary school are still learning what freedom really means after getting it back after WWII. I did not experience this war, but my parents were born at the beginning of the war. However young they were, the war affected them deeply too. Their memories of it even had a big impact on them. My mother never got and would not talk about it and my father saw something horrific as a child that I can't tell here. They survived this war and thanks to our liberators I was allowed to be born too. As I write this down, I actually realize that I am too literally liberated. It suddenly brings tears to my eyes!

This is the least we can do for the freedom Canadian and US armies gave us by risking and sacrificing their young lives. You have to have been occupied, to appreciate what freedom really means. And when you do, you never forget who gave it to you. Peace out of a Dutchie

Iam visiting Margraten cementery next month with my family and show my 13year old daughter why we have such a good life..and to educate her for the future. My grandmother is still alive and she tells amazing impressive stories (who made a big impact on her when she was little)....about a damaged B17 who past their farm flying back from a bombing raid in Germany try to stay in the air by trowing guns, doors etc out of the plane... Also the noise of all those bombers together when they flew to Germany....she never forgets....
