Superb. The Dutch Navy did a wonderful job in WW2. The O-subs were outstanding.

It helped that we were the only allied navy with torpedoes that actually worked at the start of the war.... Luckily the German ones did not work either.

@@schabanow The Dutch navy submarines were sinking more Japanese ships in the first year of the war in the East Indies than all allied navies combined, I think it is that he refers to. Which is by the way the only positive thing I can think of. Maybe also the first sub on sub victory against a German submarine. But that does not win wars, only a mention in the Guiness book of world records, I guess.

Volgens mij is dat op 0.45 de Buffel , een ramtorenschip van oorsprong. Ligt nu in Hellevoetsluis als museum. Even zo goed geweldig deze films , daar doet u veel mensen plezier mee.

@Koos Dubbelkluts Ja ik mis de Buffel wel hier, ben nog niet op nieuwe locatie geweest. Lag hier ook een beetje in een verloren hoekje. Hoop dat ze nu een beetje in de kijk ligt. Dubbelklutsen was ook wel leuk, zonder koppeling op toeren schakelen ging als boter hè...

I suspect many may not know that the Koninklijke Marine developed the submarine snorkel. Unfortunately two boats equipped with the technology (O-19 and O-20) were captured by the Germans during the invasion in 1940. This led to their subsequent use against the Allies. Y

Nah, the Germans did capture the technology but it took them till late 1944 to actually use the snorkel or sniffer because they didn't think it was a big deal. By then, the tide had turned and even with the latest technology, German U-boats were quickly becoming an endangered species.

A very nice video about Dutch Submarines, the first ones were built here by Kon.Mij de Schelde and the Dutch Submarine service was also founded here in Vlissingen in 1906. Erg leuk om dit allemaal te zien geweldig hoor en nog in kleur ook 😀👍🏽

Of the 14 subs that were destroyed by other subs under water using torpedos in ww2, two German U boats were sunk by Dutch torpedos :)

Yes, you can see the skylines of Den Helder, Huisduinen and Texel, with the Lange Jaap (lighthouse) and the water tower of Den Helder. I assume one of the sites is the Mokbaai on Texel, which was a harbour for water planes (the Teso ferry terminal was not built at that location then, yet).

I have no love of war but this film shows what it did for engineering. Mind you, putting a gun on the outside of a sub-marine vessel seems silly these days :) Rick, thank you for sharing this and others.

The German navy has plans for guns like you told. For attack small vessels instead using a 5 million dollar torpedo. The gun will be placed into the conning tower.

Cornelis Drebbel demonstreerde de eerste praktische duikboot voor de Engelse koning in 1620, waarmee 12 mannen drie uur onder water voeren in een primitieve duikboot. Hier nog een kijkje in hoe Nederlandse duikboten er in de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitzagen: *USS COD gato class destroys dutch submarine* De Nederlandse duikboot was gestrand op een rif in de buurt van Australië en de Amerikaanse duikboot kon de boot niet vlot trekken. Nadat de Nederlandse bemanning was overgestapt op de Amerikaanse duikboot, werd hun onderzeeër vernietigd om te voorkomen dat deze in handen van de vijand (Japan) zou vallen. Aan het Europese front wist een Nederlandse duikboot, de O-26, een Duitse duikboot tot zinken te brengen nadat de Duitsers lichtseinen hadden verstuurd omdat zij twijfelden of de O-26 een Geallieerde duikboot of een Duitse boot was.
