"De hond in de pot vinden" is a old Dutch saying from at least the medieval era. It's not about a meal, but about dinner specific. People ate and then gave the (stone) pot to the dog who ate the rest. So if you were too late for dinner, you would really find the dog in the pot. That is how the saying came about.

@@liannehoenderboom1018 Never knew either of my grandfathers, one of my grandmothers couldn't even write or read. So I had to have it from a single grandmothers who had a hard time walking, seeing or do much in her last 20 years or so. She did manage to reach a very respectable age of 98. For some reason she asked me permission to pass on, not one of her 4 children or family that was there a lot more often then I was. Even more interesting, I was only 15 when she asked me. Including her last wish, to bring the family back together. I tried hard, but failed in that. At least I found out the direct father-son line, which explains a lot (I seem to be part of a Norwegian viking family with likely royal blood) So, I'm only part Dutch it seems haha. Anyways, enough of that unasked for long ass story that makes no sense regarding your comment. Yes, people need to share history lessons to their young family members more. Kids these days think it's more important to push their faces in to mobile phones and game all day with the latest bs games instead of actually learning about the past. May it be family or over all history. It's a thing that tells partially who you are and what you could do.

Fun fact about "zo gek als een deur" It actually has nothing to do with a door as we know now. If someone is said to be as crazy as a door, it means he is very crazy. The word door in this expression is an old word for "fool, (nar of zot)"; it is (in the distance) related to "duizelen", and for example also with the English dizzy and the German der Tor ("the fool"). So it is a very different word than the door that can open and close; this door is related to the Gothic dauro. Middle Dutch dore was already a homonym (a word that can have more meanings): it meant "door" and "foolish." Door is in essence still a homonym, although the meaning "foolish" only appears in the saying as crazy as a door. The Dictionary of the Dutch Language mentions by door in the sense "being foolish" that you are as "zo dronken als een deur" ("being drunk") and "Een figuur slaan als een deur" ("striking a strange pose"). That door in crazy as a door means "foolish" is no longer known. Because of this people started from the familiar door, as many extended versions as crazy as a tanning door, as crazy as a swing door, as crazy as a toilet door, as crazy as a front door, as crazy as a back door and as crazy as a barn door . In the link as a tanning door ("cunning, not to be trusted") is actually the door in the sense "foolish." Source: Gemeenschap onze taal onzetaal.nl/taaladvies/zo-gek-als-een-deur/

Conclusie: It's complicated.

Whenever there is a clear winner (as in someone clearly winning all 3 rounds over their opponent), people would say they've put their opponent in a bodybag. By frequent use, the term got shortened to simply bodying someone/someone getting bodied.

"Crazy as a door" is short for "as crazy as a revolving door". An person who is totally insane is said to be twisted. A revolving door turns and these concepts and words are similar in Dutch.

So obviously these are literal translations, but I don't think most people know this about the first Dutch saying; The 'deur' in 'Zo gek als een deur' isn't a door, but an old (old and changed) word for fool (think the Dutch 'nar' as in a 'hofnar'). Meaning the non-literal translation would be; "As crazy as a fool".

In brabant we still use the word "deuzig". Maybe it's related?
@tiaxanderson97255 жыл бұрын
@@harrynac6017 highly possible. You'd have to find an etymologist (I think that's the term) for the exact details, but at some point the old word changed into 'deur' while it was still used. So if 'deuzig' came from that time.... Or, maybe it even influence the change due to the similarities ;)

In Flemish we say: 'Zo zot als een achterdeur.' or As crazy as a backdoor. Which tmo makes more sense... Bodied: te lijf gaan.

As an american, ive never heard the term “bodied” before. That must be localized or in some small subculture.
