My hometown! I worked there years ago as a ride operator! I most often drove the monorail (it's a LOT of fun!), as well as the tram that took people around the parkinglot, but they also liked to put me on the skyride, the carousel, and the Dutch Wonder House. The Wonderhouse was done by hand instead of a push button so it had a technique to it. Because it's about 15 degrees higher inside and the house spins, if it was too hot outside they'd close it for the day (or if someone threw up in it).

You know whats weird? I used o be a rideoperator and monoraildriver in an American themed park in the Netherlands! This park is like a weird mirror image of where i used tot work.

Thanks for posting this. My grandparents lived in the area, so they took us there a few times in our childhood. I remember the park having a more fairy tale theme, with recreations of fairy tales in the windows, instead of Amish scenes. Also, there was a boat ride in the rear of the park, that took you past nursery rhyme characters. I remember milking the cow and going in the Wonder House. You were right, the house does spin around you, while you remain stationary. There used to be a really cool log flume ride, that had a tunnel you would go under, after the last drop. Pretty interesting about the Cartoon Network motel. I'm going to have to learn more about that. I wonder if that's on the old Wax Museum property? It's been years since I've been back. Miss ol' Route 30!

You are correct about the Wonder House. Now I have not been in it for many decades, but you would sit on a swinging bench. The room would then start to rotate and in no time, you are clinging to the bench because you start to feel as if the bench is turning upside down while the room is standing still. You hold on for dear life thinking you are the one going upside down.

honestly, depends on the Amish person. really strict sects, they generally don't like photos but might consent if asked. the Amish family I know...they're a little less strict, and have more dealings with the outside world through the father's tack business...but they don't have a ton of modern electronics in their house, just the phone in Danny's workshop. The buggies in most Amish communities I've been through have battery operated turn signals attached too...for everyone's safety. I mean, it's generally good practice and good manners to ask before taking someone's photo anyway...
@Sethegr81
@Sethegr81 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree with asking first. I live out here and sometimes its ok to take pictures if your a tourist but other times its plain weird. You wouldn't want someone taking pictures of your kids while there at school or while there playing outside but for some reason it is common practice for people to do that to the amish. Always try to ask first and think of the inverse. Now if they are in buggies they usually don't care as long as your not overly impeding traffic or trying to ride next to them to "get a better shot".

Then there are Knobles and six flags not more than 80 miles which are great parks for families. As is Hershey Park, which is about 40 miles. Lots of great parks less than 100 miles away in this region.

The Amish believe that there is no good reason for a photograph, and that it is just vanity. Or so I was told by them. Now I kind of agree with that, looking at all the selfies swirling on the internet. Beautiful old-style park again Jacob. Although so far, half through the video, I haven't encountered much to explain why it is "Dutch" wonderland. Quickly on with the second half! Sitting on the front row of a dive and splash show Jacob, and looking very surprised and sad when it is all over! Very funny!

We got back to the park after we finished shopping, and had the park staff page for the rest of the family. The kids who were working at the front gates must have paged them at least five times before they showed up at the gate and told us that they had been on the monorail when they were called.

My grandparents took me and my brother every year starting in the late 70's.I went back as an adult and was so surprised how small it was compared to my memories.I know that happens all the time but this one was drastic to me.Still love the place.

I went to Dutch Wonderland with a Disabled Travel Group called Sprout. It was awesome. Sad that they don't do Travel Programs anymore.
