After WWII my parents bought a hill side farm and a scandia grind all tasks knife. Papa had selected the thicker blade which took a great edge but mama still told him if he expected her to cut the kernels off a couple of thousand ears of corn so she could can them he needed a better knife. He walked to Pulaski and came back with a scandia grind knife but one that was much thinner. They wore that knife out but the thicker knife was still in good shape the day mama died in her nineties. A thin bladed scandia grind knife cuts vastly better than a thick bladed scandia. I know from personal experience. That is why Green River Knives are so freaking thin. They cut better.

My absolute favorite fixed blade is my TRC South Pole Elmax with a polished Scandivex cutting edge (freehand regrinding). Super sharp, no matter whether it's wood, paper, plastic or food, the knife cuts perfectly, better than my four other South Poles. Other good bushcraft knives are my Bark River Aurora Scandi (CruWear), Böker Vigtig vs Wild (MagnaCut) or Enzo Brisa Trapper 115 (Elmax). These are only knives with Scandi or Scandivex.

This seems to be a trend that we can see in many products (especially software). A certain department in a company, or the employees responsible for improvement and development has to, in order to maintain their jobs and to stay relevant, find reasons to improve a product and come up with arguments to change details in the product. This can often lead to unnecessary change just for changes‘ sake and to justify the existence of your job in that field but not for change in order to achieve actual necessary improvement (which often already has been achieved). In a time where change, further development is often seen as virtuous companies fear to become irrelevant. But there also are examples where the preservation of an existing design can give a unique value to the brand for managing to develop a successful product with no change necessary. As an example I’d think of something like an Opinel No.8

Have you ever watched a show called Top Gear? They have a board that lists the track times of cars they test. With this course you've created, you could do something similar. Start testing each new bushcraft knife going forward, and post them slow to fast. Of course you'd have to take steps to assure all woods are equally seasoned and free of knots. But an interesting way forward possibly. Anyway another good video. Peace

I have to say that slicing with skandi or convex shows a big difference in performance. I carve daily using mainly skandi grind blades and when I got outside with my BR BC II the convex grind does not perform as aggressively as a skandi grind will. I love my BR BC II and have carved a very decent spoon with it however for carving a point/tip on that 2x4 I would prefer the scandi grind any day.

Ahhhh, I‘m wondering the same things. I wanted the Euro Bushcrafter to replace my beloved Bushcrafter 1 (cause I‘m European, of course 😂), but I‘m hating the jimpings and that fire steel notch too much. For carving and finer tasks I‘m loving my Bushcraft Scout (rounded the jimping by myself) and I‘m carrying a Ultra Lite Bushcrafter as an EDC knife (made a deep carry clip leather sheath for it)… Ok, so I will keep the old Bushcrafter until my custom Malanika Bushcrafter (MagnaCut, Sabervex) will be here… Thank You guys for that long awaited video!!!!

As a hobbyist knife maker, I was planning on making a notch like that in one of my knives. I'm surprised it's not working.
@realbroggo
@realbroggo 10 күн бұрын
I have found that while notches do work, they MAY have limitations depending on how you strike a rod and the size of the rod you intent to use. Some notches can be too small and don't work with larger fire steels. This means less surface contact = less friction = less sparks. With notches you must also make sure that you draw the fire steel straight through the notch which MAY be limiting depending on what you're use to. If used at an angle, the rod won't move through easily which can reduce performance. With a sharpened spine, you can use any size rod on any part of the spine and you don't have to be as precise. If you include a notch just make sure it's big enough to use efficiently and I'm sure it will be fine.

@@Swearengen1980 agreed, but if it’s all you’ve got in a bad situation it’s nice to know it can do it. I have one of their knives and was not that impressed, but I’d love to see a real torture test of them to see just how durable they are. They are very good at FOMO marketing, but it’s very hard to find reviews, let alone reviews that actually put their knives through the paces.
@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 8 күн бұрын
@@jarlolsen3594 Don't disagree, their marketing is great. Personally I don't care. I don't go out in the field with one option, I stick to the Nessmuk Trio preparedness. The skinner is just a skinner, it'll never be used in any capacity where durability is a factor. I'd like to see the video just for entertainment value, but it doesn't change anything for me. It's a really thin, slicey knife, it probably won't have a super impressive life during a hard torture test and that's ok, it's not a bushcraft knife. In fact, MKC (no matter what they advertise it as), doesn't make a legit bushcraft knife. They call the Marshall a survival knife, but I'm not really sure what that monstrosity actually is. It looks like it's closer to a chopper. I think you can find a review on that one on Gideon's Tactical.

G'day guys, well, thats why you take a big fella out into the sticks, these little jobs can only do so much, with, or without, pain ; ) As far as Bark River is concerned, at least step up to a Bravo 1.5 as a secondary/finer task and back up primary blade ....... In fairness I did get mine several years back, ..... before the reported quality issues came about. I do think a ferro notch is ridiculous because; either take a dedicated striker, (virtually no weight), and clip it to a ferro rod, and there's likely a myriad of other surfaces in your kit that one can use in a pinch. I have seen Dave Cantebury mod a Mora with a bail handle notch toward the tip, i.e. for lifting receptacles out of a fire, ok a novel idea, but still, totally unnecessary, ......... just use a decent stick ; ) I reckon you blokes should forget about USA Vs Europe, and get down to oz, we tend to cut through the BS and get down to the best of all worlds, ............. hehehe ; ) Cheers Duke.

That jimping and notch make it an instant NO for me and I'm European. The thicker handle would be better for my big hands. In Thailand there are 7 elevens everywhere and they sell a Thai sim card, 30 days, 30GB for 199 Thai baht and that's not even 6 US dollar. Some want to only sell you the more expensive Tourist sim card but just go to the next 7 eleven at the next corner. I wonder if Maarten did any bushcraft in Thailand? I did in the rural parts and it's amazing what you can do there.

I’ll explain why we don’t want a notch on a knife for striking a firesteel. Every European firesteel comes with a scraper that is attached to the firesteel by a cord. Why would you use a knife for that? A rounded knife spine allows for comfortable use of the other hand to pull on the spine to strengthen a cut or to place your thumb on the spine-this is more important. The scraper that comes with the firesteel does the job better and doesn’t wear out. And what if I lose the scraper? It’s attached to the firesteel with a cord, so losing the scraper means I’ve also lost the firesteel. And if, by some miracle, I was dumb enough to lose just the scraper, I can always use the knife’s cutting edge near the guard.

I'm not a fan of the firesteel notches in the spine. Many older knives here in Norway have a notch in the spine toward the front, but it's for lifting off kettles from the fireplace. Also those notches are much smaller than these large ugly firesteel craters. On a Bushcrafter I don't want any notches jimping or filework. I hope they also have options without these notches.

I think it was just a troll. Bark river named it that to guarantee you guys would go hard to see if it meets your needs as big sexy euro boys of bushcraft. That or they were messing with Mikkie. Especially with the fire steel notch.

Euro won because carving was the most energy/time consuming. If you want to do that you don't need to spend $300, get a Mora Garberg.

Barkriver sure make really nice knives. While I do get the humor of these videos and all kinds of brutal tests these guys do for the show I have to say though that batoning wood with the knife is insane. Misuse and abuse of a fine tool. Id never do that with an expensive knife. actually ANY knife, there is an axe for these tasks.

I wish bark river was still a high standard and value knife. Its not. Get a custom knife, from thousands of great knife makers, and it will have a better heat treat and quality. Safe queen knife collectors are not buying their knives, users are not buying their knives, mostly beginners are and feel like its their Ferrari because of what they paid for it. Go custom. The cost to value is no longer there for bark river. There are too many knife makers now...and easy ways to find them.
