There is also another verb aanschouwen and it means to behold, so it’s probably similar to kijken or to zien - I am advanced level in Dutch (C1 level probably) after only learning it for a few months, and it’s the easiest language ever, especially memorizing new words and reading and speaking, but I still revise words I have already learned because there are always a few words that need more repetition, but luckily most words just stick with me, and I can usually remember most words after only seeing them 1 to 3 times, so I’ve been watching almost all these videos multiple times, and also the videos from Easy Dutch and from other channels, and I learned / memorized over 90 percent of the words used in all those videos, which has to be over 8.000 base words, and at the beginning I memorized all the words from the 2.000 Dutch words video that’s 4+ hours long, and now I can understand everything in these videos, so I don’t have to switch to the English subs at all, only rarely when there’s one tricky word that I can’t remember exactly what it means and needs more repetition, however, I noticed that in the videos that I have watched multiple times, I know all the words and don’t have to switch to the English sub at all!

I'm Korean, living in China for the last 20 years. I was born and grew up in Germany until the age of 13. I'm an avid language learner, majored in Chinese linguistics and can speak and understand about ten languages. Although I never learned Dutch, I think this is why I'm able to understand more than a half what she's saying. Really amazing fact.😂 Without the video title I'd almost thought this would be some kind of German dialect. The way she forms sentences during speech, namely word order, is almost identical to German. And the sounds of the consonants and vowels exist also in German. So I guess it must be much more harder for an English or French speaker to effectively learn Dutch than a German speaker like me.

Kun je misschien een keer een aflevering doen over "onvertaalbare woorden," namelijk Nederlandse woorden die niet echt in het Engels bestaan? Woorden als 'uithangbord,' 'flessenlikker,' 'kroegfiets.' Dat lijkt me echt leuk. Misschien ook een aflevering over modale partikels. Woorden die je echt alleen gewoon in de gesproken taal kan leren. Woorden die beslaan de hele zin, als nu eenmaal, misschien, soms, nou, toch, maar, wel, gewoon, eens, even. Heel lastig, ik weet het. In het Nederlands bestrooien jullie uw zinnen graag met die modale partikels. "Geef dat speelgoed nou toch maar eens even terug aan je zus!" En discourse markers ook, als hoor, zunne, hè, toch, zeg. Echt bedankt voor al je videos, Kim!

Got a feeling I'm gonna have to watch this video and read through the lesson quite a few times before this one sinks in! 😆 I'm enjoying learning Dutch so far, but the prepositions are really killing me at the moment! Trying to remember "aan" vs "tegen" vs "naar" which all seem to mean "to" but are used in different contexts. This sort of thing is the biggest barrier to me being able to string a sentence together at the moment. I'll get there, but it's gonna take some time! 😁 After about 6 weeks of learning, I'm at the stage where I can understand fairly basic text - at least, get the gist of the content, even if I don't understand every word. I can understand a fair amount of spoken Dutch as long as the person is speaking slowly enough (which is why these videos are invaluable). But speaking and writing is going to take quite a bit more work! BTW, ik luister naar Floor Jansen (Nightwish). Ze komt uit Nederland, en ze is heel goed!

Om woordenschat te leren, ik luister naar Nederlandse liedjes (Laat me jou lied zijn, Wat zullen we drinken, Mijn leven is van mij, Het hondje zegt waf....), ik schrijf je lessen en daarnaa schrijf ik aan je, ik lies mijn stripboeken (De Ramp en De Blonde vrouw) en het Nederlandse nieuws (met google) . Maar ik heb geen praktijk dus, wanneer ik iemand ontmoet (veel Nederlanders zijn op vakantie hier), ik ben bang ik zal zegen iets als : « prettis kennig me taken » of « Kun u wat langzaten prammer » ! een soort onbedoelde spoonerism ik heb al in het Frans gemaakt dus in het Nederlands, ik dan kan ! The original pronunciation of "schrijven" is [ˈsxrɛɪvə(n)], but I once heard many people say it [ˈsxrɛɪfə(n)] or [ˈsrɛɪfə(n)] or [ˈsʀɛɪfə(n)].

Speaking is the hardest part for me. I know how to make basic sentences but when I have to make more complicated ones, I still struggle because of the word order. I haven't mastered it yet.

The superiority words master / to master etc only reflect me, and hum’ns cannot say to master etc, and should say to become advanced / native speaker level or something that that - re speaking, learning songs and trying to sing along with the lyrics, and first learning all the pronunciation rules very well and listening to how the words are pronounced and memorizing the pronunciation (and the spelling) of each new word when memorizing the word itself, will make pronunciation very easy, and the word order / forming more complex sentences gets easier as one learns more thousands of new words, and listening to the way they say those phrases and memorizing chunks and even whole phrases will make it become like second nature, however, I’m pretty sure one needs to learn at least 10.000 base words to be able to form complex sentences naturally and to be able to speak naturally, and this does require more listening + watching etc (immersion) and I would say some ppl might be able to achieve this near-native or native speaker level in Dutch in a few years, maybe 3 to 5 years for some, and maybe 5-7+ years for most, because speaking fast and being able to think fast in the new language is a lot harder than understanding the written language and requires a lot of immersion and hearing the phrases and words and seeing them many times until they can be remembered and used automatically without even having to think about it, so this takes a longer time, and one must first learn all those words and all the idioms and whole phrases that are used in certain situations etc, however, when it comes to understanding the written language, it is very easy, and some may be able to achieve an advanced enough level to understand all they say in videos with the Dutch subs / understanding the written language and to be able to understand what they say in comments and to be able to write and respond to comments in Dutch in 6 to 15 months maybe, and for me it only took about 3 or 4 months to reach an advanced level in the written language) and, I learned all the pronunciation rules at the beginning, and I also learned all the words that are in the 1.000 most used words in Dutch and 2.000 words in Dutch videos at the beginning, and now I am so used to Dutch pronunciation, I can usually tell how a word would be pronounced even if I haven’t heard it pronounced before, because Dutch is a phonetic language for the most part, and if one knows how the few diphthongs (and the letters) are pronounced, one will know how to pronounce most Dutch words, because there are only a few exceptions and most words are pronounced according to those pronunciation rules!

The pronunciation rules in Dutch + the difference between CH & G (no, they are not the same) and important info re Rs as well as the difference between the Americanized R in Dutch aka de gooise R and the American R that isn’t the same sound either... the letter E is usually pronounced EY when it is at the beginning of a word or between two consonants (except for the E in prefixes like VER or BE or HER etc, which is pronounced like a normal E, so the word verzekering is pronounced like, ferzeykuhring, so, one of the Es are pronounced EY in certain words that have a syllable with an E and then another syllable that also contains an E after a consonant, and, the E can also be pronounced like a UH sound in English if it is between two consonants that are at the end of the word or close to the end of the word, like in the word verzekering and in the word zonder that’s pronounced sonduhr or zonduhr, where the UH sound is the sound of the first letter in the English words alone and again) the IJ is pronounced like an AI / AY sound and like an EI / EY sound and like a sound in between the AI / AY sound and the EI / EY sound (so it can sound like the EI in trein, depending on the word, esp in words like pijn and fijn, which is one of the prettiest sounds ever) the letter V is usually pronounced F or close to an F (in some words such as voederen / opvoeding / vaart etc, it sounds better when pronounced like a normal V tho) the letter D at the end of the word is pronounced T (if there is no other letter after it, except for T / DT that’s also pronounced T) the J is usually pronounced like a normal I / Y sound (in some loanwords like job it is pronounced the same way as it usually pronounced in English like in the English word job, and in some words it is pronounced like a normal J sound like in the French word je and I think the second J in the loanword garage is pronounced like the French J sound) the letter B at the end of the word is always pronounced P (for example, web is pronounced wep) the Z is usually pronounced closer to S aka a soft Z (in some parts of the Netherlands, it is pronounced like an actual S tho) the W is usually pronounced close to a normal V or somewhere in the middle (but in a few words, it is pronounced closer to the way the W is pronounced in English) the AA is pronounced like a longer A sound that is a bit more open like the A in the English word bad the letter U sounds like a softer YU sound in some words and in certain words it is pronounced like a normal U sound like the OO in the English word Moon and in many words it is pronounced like the first letter in the English word again or an approximant of it (sort of like an ‘approximant’ or a more ‘serious’ sounding version of the schwa in English, which is the first letter in the English word afar, but try to say that first vowel in a French way or with a rounded mouth, as if one tried to say an O while trying to say the schwa sound) the UU diphthong sounds like the French U or like the U in dude that’s pronounced diud / dyud (so, the UU sounds like a more pronounced YU / IU sound, while the U letter sounds more like a less pronounced YU / IU sound or like a normal U sound, depending on the word) the OE diphthong sounds like a normal U sound in almost all words like the OO in the English word moo (so koe sounds like ku, but, there are a few exceptions tho, so a few words that have OE do not follow this rule) the UI diphthong is pronounced like AI / AY with a soft I / Y sound (so, it’s like, the I or Y sound is barely touched, and sometimes it’s not easy to hear it, and, in some parts of Belgium it is pronounced kinda like an English UH sound) the OU diphthong is pronounced AU the IE diphthong is pronounced I / Y like the EA in the English word bean the OO is usually pronounced like a OU sound like the OU in the English word soul and the U is kinda soft aka barely touched and that means the ‘emphasis’ is usually on the O sound and in some words I think it is pronounced like an UH-U sound and that means the O sounds more like the UH sound in English like the first A in the word again with an U sound right after it the EE is pronounced like an I / Y sound is certain words and it is pronounced like an I-UH / Y-UH sounds in certain words like meer and it is pronounced like an EY sound in certain words like gemeen / meen / verdween the CH sound is like a C-controlled soft H-like sound (Welsh also has this sound) the G is usually like a G-controlled soft H-like sound the NG is pronounced like the NG in English (so wang is pronounced like vang, but the G is very soft and almost unvoiced, like in the English word sing, so it sounds more like van-) Nou, it’s good to know these rules and to get used to them, BUT, one shouldn’t just rely on pronunciation rules tho - one is supposed to memorize the pronunciation of each word when one learns the word itself, because some words are pronounced in different ways that do not follow these pronunciation rules, even though most words do follow the pronunciation rules, esp most of the diphthongs! It’s important to know that the CH sound and the G sound are not the same sound - CH is more of a K-controlled H-like sound, while G is more of a G-controlled H-like sound, the H-like sound being some kind of an ‘approximant’ of the H sound, so they are very close, and at the end of the word or in the middle of certain words, both CH and G can sound exactly like an H sound, so one can easily confuse them, and, the difference between the CH and the G is more obvious at the beginning of a word (like, when the word starts with CH and when the word starts with G, one can hear the difference, because it sounds like there is some kind of a K / C sound before the H-like sound when the word starts with CH) and, the CH also exists in Welsh, and, Welsh kinda reminds me of Dutch in a way! I’m pretty sure the softer Gs are considered a voiceless velar fricative [χ] and, the harder Gs are referred to as a voiced velar fricative [ɣ] or something like that! And, somebody said that, in Flanders, some native speakers pronounce the voiced G almost like /h/ and that a few “pronounce it almost like a voiced uvular fricative [ʁ] or a voiced glottal fricative [ɦ] as in one of the oude Belgian films, thus making the H in such words as hoed / hand / huis disappear in order to differentiate them with voiced G in such words as vlaggen / zeggen / Verhaege” etc! Also, the American R is not the same as the Americanized R used in Dutch aka de gooise R, which is produced in a similar way - the American R is a bit more ‘extreme’, so to speak, while the Americanized R in Dutch is kinda like in between / in the middle of an American R and a normal R that is very soft! And, the huig-R used in Dutch is not the same as the French R, but it is produced in a similar way - the French R is more ‘extreme’ or more ‘intense’ and sounds more like a rolled R, while the huig-R in Dutch sounds softer and more ‘elegant’ and more refined, so to speak, but this of course also depends on one’s voice and accent! Both the Americanized R / de gooise R and de huig-R are in the soft Rs category, just like the American R, and, there is also a type of R that is very soft, but isn’t Americanized and isn’t huig-R-like and isn’t an American R either, so it is a normal soft R, which can also be said in an ultra soft way, and these soft Rs (including the Americanized / gooise R and the American R and the softest huig-R) have the prettiest sound, so the Rs should be pronounced in soft ways in all languages, including Dutch and Spanish etc, because rolled Rs don’t sound good / refined / pretty, and the only time a rolled R can sound acceptable is when it isn’t too rolled (just barely rolled) and when the dudes and the guys saying it have a very soft and warm voice that is higher, like, lyric tenors with soft and warm tone, because it can sound extremely unrefined and grating and harsh when words with rolled Rs are spoken by dudes that are a dramatic baritone, for example, with extremely heavy and dark tones! The NG in Dutch is pronounced just like in English, like in the English word sing, so it is a normal G that is very soft / barely touched, so when it is at the end of the word it is not easy to hear the G after N, so the word wang, for example, is pronounced vang, but it sounds more like van- but the G is still there, but very soft / almost unvoiced - and the CH in lachen and in schrijven is a K-controlled / C-controlled H-like sound, so it is not the exact same sound as the G in grenzen, which is a G-controlled H-like sound that has a soft G ‘base’ with an airy H-like sound on top of it that seems like it’s surrounding the G base, and most confuse CH and G because they are produced in a similar way, just as many confuse the ETH sound (the TH in the English word then) with the D in the Spanish word nada, which aren’t the same sound, and the D in nada is more of an ‘approximant’ of it, but they are kinda similar, so most can easily confuse the two!

Het is interessant dat je "leren is niet lezen" zegt. In het Engels, "to read" klinkt niet als "leren," maar in het Spans is het "leer," en in het Frans is het "lire." Engelstaligen maken deze fout niet vanwege het Engels, maar vanwege andere talen die zij kunnen spreken.

I am not sure about the pronunciation of "schrijven". In KZbin videos, Dutch speakers from Flanders say it always with "ch", thus: [ˈsxrɛɪvən]. But, many Dutch speakers from The Netherlands pronounce it without "ch", thus: [ˈsrɛɪvən]. The Dutch people omit -n of -en, too! I wonder why they do that.
