My uncle was addicted to drugs, around 2016 or 17 he surrendered and rehabed, his children who is my cousin is living with us, after his father got rehabed his life was normal now and guess what? My uncle and my cousins are living on a good life in the mountains planting and selling vegetables. Many people have changed since this drug war started. Edit: corrected some spellings

what happened to your uncle is not the only story to tell. it as a good thing that he is living a good life now, but to insinuate that the war on drugs was successful just because you did not experience the truama and fear is downright wrong. maybe you're right at the part when you mentioned that lives did change, but for the majority of us, it got worse.

There is an effective solution if we have just and honest public officials, it is very narrow minded to look at these abuses of power by police and politicians as necessary in order to quell drug related crimes and improve public safety. It is for that very reason why these corrupt politicians want you to view it as such, because as long as you think that abuses of power = safety, these corrupt politicians will remain seated in the highest positions in the government motivated by their own personal interests rather than national interest and public interest in mind. For fucks sake, just look at the "gentleman's agreement" regarding Scarbrough Shoal. The former administration waived their own responsibility of protecting national waters inscribed in the Philippine Constitution mind you, just so you can feel 'safe' about China when all it does is weaken our country further. It's similar to how the allies used the same appeasement strategy to the Third Reich and we all know how well that preserved 50 million lives, prevented a genocide, and prevented a second world war. Until a cornered dog refuses to bite, the corner it hides in becomes smaller and smaller until it can no longer fight.

@Elijah Edric Guinto welp I agree, we all know these "killings" but you should also credit their effort for these people. The government gave them a chance to acknowledge their habits and even gave them support for their rehab. 1.26 million drug addicts were given help just on the first few months - It's funny how this video makes the police look evil just like dem telenovelas. If you look at it from an obvious perspective, the police are hunting down drug addicts ever since and the current government just gave them more support to do their job. I don't glorify Duterte, I am just happy that this current government is functioning (exaggerated of course) compared to the previous ones. The number of people when the curfew was announced (due to war on drugs) literally dropped in our area. I noticed this easily because my shift always coincide with me getting home past curfew due to the travel. Whereas before Duterte you get this thugs everywhere on our street - especially late at night, after the war on drugs started literally the numbers dropped to zero. I even have friends who are drug addicts and they just talk about it casually like they didn't do anything bad. There were a lot of crimes happening here especially burglary at night or day just so they could buy drugs, and some of the drug addict family member sell some of their valuable stuff, like the parents jewelries, appliances, shoes etc. Gang riots on the streets everyday, when these bastards are high on drugs they just wanna go crazy and violent. I know this may look bad to the western peoples point of view but we Filipinos are already so fed up with these junkies going in and out of prison doing the same crimes. Politicians and high ranking police officials are also involved on drug deals. We badly need a leader that could stop these corruption before its too late. In our very small town, during the first few weeks of President Duterte's war on drugs, about 100+ people surrendered to the police. It was such an overwhelming thing because we weren't expecting that we have such high number of users or worst pushers in our town. They surrendered voluntarily, which made it great because there wasn't any blood shed at all. One of my cousins who was just 16 that time were one of those who surrendered. I was in college back then. We were crying when we learned that he was influenced by his well off classmates. If your president had any understanding of human rights then he shouldn't of implemented such a draconian approach in dealing with the drug problem. Portugal did the exact opposite in handling their drug problem, and it's worked for them, its about harm reduction, proper education getting addicts proper treatment, and giving them a chance to try and get better and show perhaps just a little freaking compassion for addicts because I'm a former addict myself, and its heartbreaking how all addicts (not just in your country but everywhere especially here in the US) are stigmatized and treated as lost cause pieces of sh!t, because that couldn't be further from the truth. At least addicts here don't have to worry about "death squads" patrolling their neighborhoods killing people because they choose to get high.

@@gabbytayApathy at its finest, First of all a human being is no less or more important than another because of what country or culture they live in or whatever, its irrelevant. Secondly this "the end justifies the means" approach is the same tool dictators have used throughout history and it never ends well. You guys want to get rid of the dealers go ahead, they won't be missed, of course decriminalization would literally put them out of business faster then the phony "war on drugs" has, but there's no time for rational solutions, so anyways. I'm talking about addicts, many of whom are not bad people, they themselves are sick and need legitimate help, but that president is totally apathetic towards them, whatever if he wants to send out his "death squads" to go CoD on addicts then that's on him and the people who put him power, but don't expect the rest of the world to approve or to not express their thoughts on the matter. You'll never be able to justify this kind policy. Nobody ever wins these type of wars, everyone loses. Let me ask you a question then, do you know what it's like to be an addict? or better yet, have you ever known someone that's an addict, what if that someone was a family member or someone you really cared about and was an addict and they fell victim to this lunacy, would you be ok with that? 3rd world country or 1st world country, the drugs don't care either way about that, when you're an addict the drug(s) literally owns you, mentally and physically, people need to understand that.

When are people going to realize, that the so called "war on drugs" was lost along time ago (the drugs won) and that prohibition has historically failed time and time again, all it does is remove quality control, crates a "black market" and fuels organized crime and international terrorist organizations. I am a public school teacher here in the Philippines assigned in a far-flung 4th class municipality where there is no signal and I have witnessed how DRUGS PROLIFERATED the area. Some of our students would go to school under the influence of drugs and they confessed to us how and where they take drugs. I even had a student who push drugs for money, and he was proud of it. That is how life was for them before, but it was all changed when DUTERTE came into power in 2016. Drug addicts and dealers knew that they have to stop because they knew they will be dealt with strongly by the government, and low and behold the area is now drug-free since then. Some elites living in the metro and studying in prestigious universities or foreigners only read stories about this, and most often than not they are the ones commenting against the war on drugs. They cannot understand the gruesome realities on the ground, they do not know how the play goes in the field where compassion, love, and care to change the Drug Addicts could no longer sustain, and yet it kills a lot of young people, fathers and mothers and families. DUTERTE WAR ON DRUGS becomes LEGITIMATE because the people felt the effects of it on the ground, they feel safe they feel free from fear of being killed and fear of being raped and stab to death on the streets among others. It may not sound pragmatic on resolving the issue, but overall Duterte's War on Drugs helped the Philippines from being a Narco-State. You may watch on KZbin how people live in narco-states now ---We don't want that.

That is a MASSIVE fucking failure. Portugal on the other hand nearly doesn't have any meth users at all, that is a succes. In portugal, after decriminalization, drug use and drug crime was cut in half. In the phillipines barely anything has changed except for the increasing body count.

It's somewhat biased, but it's 9/10, a good documentary. My main problem with this kind of documentary is it always focuses on the victims of the drug war, not the victims of drug users. Living in the Ghetto, I can assure you, these drug addicts are a real menace. They steal from hardworking people. They rob, assault, and even kill just to fund their addiction. Sometimes, high on their drugs, they would harass nearby residents. There was a student in the area I live in where addicts shot a him with an improvised gun using a steel pipe. You can't leave your house at night without the risk of getting mugged and murdered. Of course, criminals can pretend to be a victim after they died or got caught, why would they care about their prey? Have you ever cared for the food you just ate? For the plant and animal you just ate? It's similar, but not exactly the same, but for addicts, it might as well be. Although, The police themselves are also quite the menace, while not to the same extent as drug addicts, they're still a menace. Serve and protect? If serving someone means treating you like an insect, then sure maybe. I support the President's methods, however his execution of his methods were poor. Only poverty-stricken addicts die, while the rich drug lords survive. Why? Because they have connections to the police. Some of the high ranking police officers are even drug lords. In Davao City's city jail, the city where the president and his family lived for a few decades, you can still find addicts in the Ghetto area. Even in the City Jail, a drug courier can get caught in the act and still leave the premises without any scratches. That's how terrible his execution was. I even know some people who are 100% drug addicts themselves but were never caught or slain by the police. There was only one guy that got arrested. And it was back in his first year in the office 2016-2017. In the end, his drug war is just as terribly executed as his Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach project. It's only purpose is to plug the holes of a leaking dam, and not fixing the root cause of the leak.

Agree with you bro. They just want to push their narrative that the drug war was bad. It was bad for the drug users, but mostly positive for the good people. The so called war on drugs cannot be won, even with the draconian way by Duterte. Actually calling it a war is already the path to a wrong mindset, as this isn´t about winning. It was shown time and again that a system with rights and an emphasis on prevention and accountability works best to reduce the damage of drugs from society in a meaningful and lasting way. Allowing consenting adults a recreational use in form of decriminalization (and sending them to education/rehab centers instead of prison/killing them ) has proven very effective like in Portugal. Also I´d bet my left kidney that a lot of those police officers and officials shown here are corrupt, threatening innocent civilians and some are heavy drug users themselves. With no oversight and accountability they will do more damage to society than drugs alone would over the years.

In my opinion here is that Pres.Duterte was the perfect example on the book named The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli where he prefered to be feared than loved, but the Filipinos loved him because he cared for his country despite being criticized by others especially the American government. And the Filipinos feared him for his discipline and superiority over the criminals...which is good because if you don't strike fear to the heart of the criminals they will just throw sh*t right in your face.😁

Living in this country was hell years ago before Duterte and since he has been President things have got a hell of a lot better. There were snatchers, open crimes and drugs that ran rampant. you could not walk down the street without some incidents happening. The President cleaned up his own home town when he was governor there with zero tolerance and that is what he bought to the drug dealers when President. No country has any right to interfere in another countries problems or war on drugs and America should butt out as it's own drug problems are the highest in the world. How many drug lords and dealers have America killed? Three thousand major criminals were killed but how many lives did they destroy with their poison. This does not portray a correct rendition of the facts and it also does not say or show how many criminals gave themselves up which was tens of thousands and not killed. If a criminal shoots at you while trying to apprehend them they chose what happens next. He cleaned up the crooked police and politicians and many other forms of corruption in the Philippines and now you can feel a lot safer than before. Unless you have seen this for yourself then do not judge another countries way of dealing with the problems drugs bring to the people. To a lot of people he is a hero and he did things that other previous presidents did nothing about so don't judge if you can not fix the problems in your own country.

LIES!!!! I received 3 death threats from the president’s loyal dogs by giving my opinion on the booming number of extrajudicial killings. According to Bensouda’s report, there was a reason to believe that state actors have killed thousands of civilians under the drug war and that vigilante-style killings were perpetrated by police officers themselves or other private individuals hired by authorities - leading to a death toll of between 12,000 to 30,000 civilians. This was based on claims that extrajudicial killings (EJKs) have been rampant in the country. Violence will never be the answer. Violence is a short-term solution to a long-term problem.

If you arrest or kill a rapist there will be less people getting raped/ if you arrest or kill a drug dealer there won’t be less drugs or addicts. if he implied rehabilitation as much as he does violence maybe then we would see more changes. If they legalized drugs then the criminals wouldn’t be motivated to sell them since they needed to compete with legal drug stores with better and safer quality products. Remember these officers protect us and our families , they put their life in danger every day because they go against the worst scum society has to offer. What's happening in the Philippines is a case of the police and the people getting tired of the ineffectiveness of the laws , which like in the US criminals get caught one day only to be let go a couple of days later , then committing the same crimes all over again. Some times criminals are exterminated extra judicially , this may not be pretty , but it's effective.
