Very cool! Some good points on the OEM tires and how bouncy they are. I had never thought of replacing the fenders, mine are welded on, I guess I could cut them off and upsize wheels, tires & fenders. Probably a project for another day (more likely, another year!). Hopefully I can get this little winch project done by end of yr. Thanks again, I will watch some of your other videos. I have an 07 Durango with 4.7 V-8. Back seats are removed and I use the interior for cargo, kind of like a pickup truck with a topper. Has side airbags, etc. Truly a used car classic. Mercedes owned Chrysler back then, and it has a lot of German parts. Mercedes did the ride engineering, and the 4.7 V-8 was one of "Wards 10 Best Engines" when it came out. Super smooth and torquey. I have spent next to nothing in repairs in 10 yrs and you can find them with 100,000 miles for $4,000-$5,000. Chrysler Aspen is a clone. Mine has 225,000 mi. and I will probably sell it when I get to 300K.

I had my fenders cut off. The replacements are plastic and screwed into the wooden box. Take Care!

Great idea I am a hunter and have limited mobility and this winch is perfect

Excellent! Glad it may work for you. It'll hoist just about anything you can shoot straight up. So, I'm sure it'll drag any carcass into a trailer or pickup. It'll also work for a quad, if that's more of what you had in mind. ;-) Thanks for visiting!

Thanks for visiting and posting a comment. This is not one of my more popular videos, which is understandable on a channel that's focused on my GTI. HAHA! Take Care!

You haul more stuff than most truck owners I know.

HAHA! You're probably right. So many trucks are just "status" symbols. In Texas, 4-door trucks are often referred to as "Texas Cadillacs" and hardly see any work at all. Thanks for visiting!

I absolutely love the undersized load sign, where did you get it? I just bought lowes carry on 4x5 cargo trailer.

Great video, gives me lots of ideas! How did you mount the winch to the trailer?
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
My method is not super-solid, but good enough for a rolling load. In short, there's a plate inside the trailer box. I put the top two bolts right on the trailer frame before passing through to the plate. I have just one of the bottom bolts installed because a bolt head or nut would interfere with the gear on the winch's spool. I figured "three is good enough" for my expected loads. You might also notice that I have a block of wood directly behind the roller to prevent the area from flexing. I think that's everything. Let me know if I've missed anything. Thanks for visiting!

Wellll I bought the winch from Dutton-Lainson for $130.00, and got the 25' strap from Amazon and the roller assy. is out of stock from the manufacturer. NOW the big ???? is where on God's earth can I find some kind of 3/8 x 3/8 male to male adapter so that I can use my drill w/ one of my many 5/8" sockets? I've been to every tool store in my hometown and everyone looks at me as if I'm a martian. Oh yeah.... I too haul my tiny trailer w/ a VW Jetta. Thanx ahead of time!
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing, Pat! I use these adapters: amzn.to/3zD0T6D. Nice work towing with the Jetta. I towed with my Mk3 Jetta TDI for nearly 20 years and then my Mk6 for a few years before selling it back to VW (Dieselgate). Take Care!

I just ordered the same winch that you have, plus a 20' strap, and the 5" mounting bracket, all directly from Dutton Lainson. $160 total, a little pricy but good quality stuff and I think I will be happy. Thanks for talking me out of the cable! There is a video on installing the strap & is EZ, so I think I will just keep the strap in my shed & install it when needed (rare occasions). Do you have any advice on trailer tires / wheels? My tread is gone & I need to replace tires. 12" rims. Thanks, Pat
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
Sounds great! As for tires, I shop at etrailer.com. Visit them and look at their drill-down for a good combo. I don't know what you have for a trailer. If the fenders are only large enough to barely clear your 12" tires, you may not be able to upsize very far. My trailer has larger fenders that sit higher. Have a look at my trailer at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXXZoGagrNeNpNE if you haven't already seen it. Good Luck!

Thanks, Alexander! Sharing my life story could be a slippery slope. What to share? What is too much? It can be divisive. HAHA! For now, my GTI is the focus of the channel; and I definitely want to stay apolitical. I may add a few personal things later... they're bound to come out if I add some travel content. I have the basics on my website at stealthgti.com/about/. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

@@StealthGTI Dutton Lainson looks like a quality product. I was thinking of the 1,500 lb hex drive worm gear winch and the Dutton Lainson 6565 universal mounting bracket and attaching it to the tongue of my utility trailer using U bolts. I would use it if my riding lawn mower broke down and I needed to pull it onto the trailer. That hex drive feature is a must! Not sure if I want to use cable or a strap. I guess strap is easier to work with?
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
@@patrickconroy8729 - The strap is easy. It's only 20 feet long. It also won't corrode, get stiff, or require gloves to handle. I think all of that applies to cable (unless it's synthetic). Perhaps I'll find a drawback to the strap someday. But it's inexpensive to replace by the time that drawback surfaces. ;-)
@patrickconroy87294 жыл бұрын
@@StealthGTI Thanks again. The only thing I can think of is the Florida sun is likely to weaken it. I will be keeping it outdoors. Did your winch come with the strap? (Installing a cable is a pain in the butt too)
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
@@patrickconroy8729 - The strap was sold separately. But it was easy to install; no crimping or anything. I think directions are easy to find at etrailer.com. I think I just slid a bolt through the loop in the strap. As for sun exposure, you could probably put some sort of cover over the winch to keep the sun away. With that said, it's made for boat applications where it's likely in the sun a lot anyway.

The ratio is 40:1. Click the link in the video description to visit the etrailer.com page where I bought the item. It has full specs and details. Thanks for visiting.
