All I remember growing up in trinidad, is coolie coolie come for roti,all the roti done, when the N pull the chain, all the coolie.run.. my grandmother told me that the coolies., were afraid of the blacks in Trinidad.. Which is true, when I brought my car to a coolie mechanic, to paint, and he did not deliver on said date, I brought my african American friend with me, not only did I got my car back, I got a refund, and some gifrt cards., True happening..

Coolie refers to people in a specific occupation - men who carry your luggage at train stations. They traditionally wore red shirts to identify themselves in crowds. The practice thrived during the British Raj but endured into the 90s. Today few remain as the demand has dwindled. Coolie unions aren't that strong either. The word Coolie does NOT refer to all kinds of labour, nor is it a generic term for ethnic Indians migrating out to all ex - imperial colonies. It has taken on that character among the Indian migrants only in the West Indies. Indians who migrated to East Africa are referred to as Local Asians and Muhindi, among others. I would add that Coolie is not a derogatory Hindi term. It is neither an insult nor used as a compliment for hard work. It simply means someone who picks up luggage in a very specific context - the train station.

++ Coolie is specific to the North Indian language Hindi and is NOT used across other regional languages, especially not in the Deccan or South India. The association of Coolie to those who migrated to the West Indies speaks to their regional origin - North India - and also the nature of their labour. The Indians that settled across Africa represent a more diverse demographic - Gujarati (Baniya/Baniyani), Marwari, Tamil, Maharashtrian, Malayali. Similarly, you see that a majority of immigrants in South East Asia are Tamil, in Japan it was the Sindhis, and in the Gulf it's the Malayalis.

"COOLIE" is not a word for you people to use. "COOLIE" does not depict who you are. a "COOLIE" is a person who works at the train stations in India carrying people baggages. Its a word that was thrown at people of East Indian descent to demean them.
