I also miss Suncoast. I loved how the store was always dimly lit and kinda dark on the inside, with movies playing on mounted TVs like James said. And Suncoast always had the best selection of DVDs anime, foreign films, cult classics, horror, and especially television seasons. They just seemed to have stuff you couldn't get at Blockbuster and I discovered so many great films at Suncoast like Fight Club, Memento, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Eraserhead, etc. The atmosphere inside the store and the aesthetic was just perfect for browsing movies. This was when we had internet, but only dial up and it was really limited. There wasn't a lot of word of mouth online yet, if you got recommend a movie it was in person or just seeing a cool cover on the shelf. The employees there tho were amazing! They would always recommend films if you asked and we're super knowledgeable. They got to know me and what genres I like (SciFi, Horror, 80s/90s action, Psychological thrillers/Mindfucks, Comedies and Anime) and always had great recommendations about new films as well as lesser known and cult classics stuff. R.I.P. in peace Suncoast at Ingram Park Mall

I remember going to the video store Friday nights with my dad. We’d order Chinese food or pizza and walk over to the video store and get 5 movies for $5 for the weekend. If I was sick and had to stay home from school for an extended period we’d get videos for me to watch during the week. What a great reminder and trip down memory lane James!

"I don't want to see history disappearing" YOU are responsible for introducing many people to older things they would normally not be introduced to. AVGN was the biggest thing that got me to go back to the retro systems from the PS2 era. Throughout this entire video I was jotting down movie titles that seemed interesting based on the cover. Maybe you make a video (Or maybe even an app) or something called the "Digital video store" where you just scroll through your shelves and all the covers so people can pick out ones they want to track down.

29:57- love it anytime he says "Bubba Ho-Tep." I remember there was a video store we used to go to in Forest Hills until I was 7 (then we moved away), that was the only place I ever saw that organized their collection in this way. Instead of tapes up front, there were these large, glossy, white cardboard squares that would have the VHS box flattened out and taped on (I forget if it was only the front, or if the back of the card also showed the back of the tape) and they were sorted out much the same way you'd see vinyl records at a music store. You'd bring the card up to the counter, and the guy would into the back and give you the tape in exchange for the card. If the card wasn't up front, someone rented it out. It was really unique and saved space up front, but I've never ever seen any other store like it. Anyone else ever see that? Also, I hope BluRays and 4K BluRays never die because physical media is the best.

I'm not the best with words so it's hard to describe but when I watch him in this room. I feel like a piece of my past isin't lost. I was born in 1997 so my memories of video stores are a lot less than most but they are still there and I can't go back to a blockbuster. There are some video stores still but it's not the same like it was 12 years ago. But seeing this room James put so much effort into putting together, seeing his massive collection of games and consoles. It's like all this stuff is still there and hes taking care of it.

+El Capo Ninja For some reason I remember the Versatile part being added in roughly 2001. Before that I always heard it as Digital Video Disc. My guess it's sort of like CD when it came out in 1987 when it was pretty much purely music, then they realized they could do more things with it.
@omikronweapon
@omikronweapon 4 жыл бұрын
apparently, there were some issues with "digital video disc" already being used. It also depends on what you use it for. Although I don't know many dvd music albums, in the hayday of dvd, tons of games were mainly released on dvd formats. In light of that, it makes more sense to call it versatile, rather than video.

You mentioned never seeing any laserdisc in video stores. That was interesting to me because I used to work in a video store back in 2000+ and when we did inventory one year, we had to go into the back to comb through clamshell cases. We discovered a box in the back and it had a couple laserdiscs. That was probably the strangest discovery from my time at the video store. I never got answers as to what we had them for. I can't even remember the titles now but they were popular movies that we already had in the store on VHS. I'd assumed they were maybe demos sent by the studio or something but who knows.

*Hey, Mike or James (if you see this comment), I have a suggestion, it would be really nice if you guys did a video showing more of your game collection, talking about it and maybe giving some tips to future collectors.* This is really inspiring, as a wannabe collector myself, it's amazing to watch huge collections full of story. I've always been into the physical media. And I don't think it will totally die, because people know there are people collecting stuff. And if you really think about, they wouldn't keep releasing so many physical stuff, but they still do. Of course it's not at it's peak as it used to be, but it will always have a following. I enjoy buying CDs, since I actually use CD players to listen to music (I'm not always in the PC, so if I'm doing something else, it's just great). And also, it gives us a great bond with something, we have stories about how we got something, it's pretty nice. I'm still going to be a collector, mainly a video game collector, and on a lesser extent of other stuff too. I will be starting this year (with my own money, not by asking for a family member or anything).

+cheez_munky My Dad had a collection of them, he was a big audio buff in the 1970s if that's the right term. The only L.D. player we had when I was a kid was a Panasonic if I remember right, and it flipped the disc (or should I say the laser?) over automatically. Star Wars on it was in pretty good video quality for the Pre-1997 versions, (Widescreen too!) we also watched BTTF on it a lot and got many other movies... "A Kid In King Arthur's Court" was one of them, Laserdiscs were still being made that late.

Laser Discs were popular in Japan. So were Minidiscs. It's sad that Minidiscs never caught on in that time before mp3 players. They were smaller than CD's, held the same amount of data and they never skipped.

+cheez_munky I've always leaned towards the reasoning being that they didn't look cool enough, like 90's CD-rom enclosures to try and stop scratches, but smaller. Really it's Sony's strange love of creating proprietary software/hardware. They keep doing it, and most times it ends badly for them.
