I leave for San Diego as Infantry on October 19th. I am 17 now and this is the best decision I have ever made. I joined and took the oath because of what this country gave me and my family. We constantly tried moving country to country from the war torn balkan war in the 90's. Germany, Netherlands and Denmark denied us but America helped us out and welcomed us and my parents always dreamed of moving here when they were kids. This is why I am more than willing to die for this flag. You are my motherland and I will die for you. You gave my family a home and helped us.

God I wish people would remember the Viet Nam veterans. They were disrespected to no end. To this day, they just thought of as losers and drug addicts. I know, I'm Viet Nam era. John M. Johnson I know this comment is old but I'll reply anyways. When I hear the word hero, I think of the Vietnam veterans. I respect the WW2 Veterans but they always had the support and to this day are beloved by all. But it was the Vietnam vets that stepped up and took the oath, went to fight for their country during an unpopular war, you guys took all that burden and pain and suffering for years. All of that weight on your shoulders. God damn, lesser men wouldn't be able to handle it. I will always remember the Vietnam veterans as the bravest men who stepped up when everyone else stepped down and ran. I love and respect Vietnam vets, because they've been through the most and deserve our full respect, love, and admiration. I'm not even writing this to kiss ass, this is straight from my very core from my very soul. Semper Fi sir, God bless you.

Thank you for your comment. My cousin was KIA (1967) and my husband was suffered from his time in the Vietnam War. He left at 17 wanting to honor his country, 50 plus years later he still has survivor's guilt, shame, and is a lost soul.

Great Tribute. My uncle (Lt. Col. Max William Shaeffer) served in the marines until he died on a Japanese hell-ship. Born in Womelsdorf, Pa. in Sept. 30, 1905, served from June 7, 1928 to January 29, 1945 when he died. He holds the Bronze Star. I have made the decision that (when I am old enough) I am joining the Marines.
