This video convinced me to buy this. I have owned a DW-8000 in the past (my first synth, 1998), and an EX-8000 (maybe 2014, after longing for my old DW). I sold both due to the programming issues. I bought another EX-8000 recently in hopes of getting this programmer. I finally got the programmer and it has completely unlocked the potential of this synth for me. Whoa, you can pull the details out of this synth, and the pre-defined effects modes is such a nice touch. I love the sound of the DW/EX-8000, and now I can finally interact with it.

This (and their other controllers) looks fantastic! The DW is a synth that really doesn't *need* a controller like this, as the UI is pretty intuitive, but would definitely benefit from it. Editing the EGs is one thing I could see being vastly improved, for example. The AJ series would benefit even more from their equally cool looking MPG-50. I definitely want both.

Rockin' that Commodore 64 in the background at the beginning! ;-) Never had one (I was an Atari guy), but keep looking for decent ones on eBay...along with a good DW-8000 deal. Some of the options with this controller, I think I would prefer the continuous alteration of using the mod wheel to the stepping behavior of the controller (at least I don't recall the mod wheel having any stepping last time I played a DW-8000).
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the C64 will be a main focus a little later where I'll make music with the SID as a major sound source. Stepping is of no consequence if you don't plan to use any real time controlling of the filter etc, which I never use myself anyeays. Apart from demos like this.
@retroaktivsynthesizers50755 жыл бұрын
You can use the mod wheel, breath or aftertouch to control the assigns on the DW-8P. There is very little stepping on DW-8000 when adjusting the filter, unless you are at high resonance settings (with slight self-oscillation). When the rez is ringing, you can hear the 64 steps of the filter more clearly, though this is really only audible when the rez is at a setting above 26 or 27 (out of 31)

So I have just been listening to loads of Prophet 6 demos. After I listened again to DW8000. I'm amazed how round and warm it sounds compared to the Prophet. I am trying to find one but they have shot up in price recently,. Everyone has now realized how good they are (people were too focused on Roland and Yamaha at the time so I think this one got forgotten). Would take it over a DX7 or JX8P any day. Also funny how every one says the filter is so rich (very true) but is in fact the same one the Poly 800 has.

@anoniconoclast20302 жыл бұрын
@@EspenKraft It boils down to what kind of sounds you want to make and how you want to use them. If you were never bothered by the low resolution, then you were not at a point where it mattered. But someday you might see the light. If an update comes, I am getting it. The DW8000 absolutely suffers from low resolution and would be greatly improved with an update. It all depends on how much of a fan you are and what kind of sounds you need. Many of us have expressed this concern. Another good thing to have is the Turbo mod. Anyway, love your music.
@neanalog2 жыл бұрын
I think Korg did this because memory was at a premium in this synth. (64 patches completely fills up the patch ROM without any bits to spare.) That's the same reason they shared sysex Ids in the DW-6000. (No room in memory for individual param IDs) In order to squeeze 64 patches into the tiny memory chip on-board, they couldn't allow every param to be an 8-bit value. That's why most params on the DWs are less than 6 bit values. So even if the firmware were rewritten, the synth would need to be made to support a larger memory chip, so the patches (in the new 8-bit format) could actually fit into the synth. This is why I suspect nobody has done a firmware rewrite.

Can you edit in real time the patches on a DW6000, on the website it talks about loading the sysex and then modifying the sounds, just curious if it’s still in real-time while editing.
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand the question.
@retroaktivsynthesizers50754 жыл бұрын
Yes, the DW-8P seamlessly edits the 6000 in real time. Many people do not know that the 6000 uses shared parameter IDs, which means that each parameter ID affects 2 parameters simultaneously. This is why things like the Behringer BCR2000 don't work well with the DW-6000. What you are referring to on the website, is where I say that the controller can "download" the current sound from your DW-6000. This allows the DW-8P to know what the current values of each parameter are. This allows you to affect only one parameter of a shared parameter ID. (I know, confusing) Long story short, the DW-8P controls the DW-6000 the same way it controls the 8000 in this video. Of course, the DW-6000 doesn't have certain parameters that the 8000 does, such as velocity sensitivity, ramp generator (or "auto-bend", as Korg likes to call it), multiple LFO waveforms, and the delay parameters.

Unfortunately it's not available as a kit at this time. I've been moving away from the DIY stuff, because too many people try to build stuff that's out of their skill range (to save money), and I end up spending an enormous amount of time either helping them fix their work, or simply doing it for them when they mail their kit to me. All of my stuff is SMD, which seems to cause trouble for a lot of people. I may offer some partially assembled kits in the future, where users have to solder in the screen, leds, pots, switches, jacks, and interconnects, but the problem there is that the builder would need to flash the chips (the board needs power and ISP headers connected to even flash the bootloader), which would require an ISP programmer and a bit of software knowledge. I love the DIY community, and I love to provide kits, but I've learned that kits really need to be through hole only in order for most people to be able to build them successfully.

Poly-800 unfortunately doesn't have sysex implementation, which is why there are no controlelrs for it. Too bad really.
@12opsynths3 жыл бұрын
@@neanalog there's a guy in CT who will mod your poly 800 for improved sysex compatibility and a custom ctrlr panel for it. So perhaps with some tweaking...

Impressive controller action but the sounds don´t necessarily benefit from it. That´s often the case with things too complex especially in music, it does not sound natural anymore >>organic

Why oh why did I ever sell my DW8000?!?

Jim Gourgoutis buy a microKorg and here you have your DW8000 back in 4voice polyphony :-)

@@styleguide01 I had a MK for a while, and I do think they sound great, but I HATED the mini keys and the 4-knob + grid programming interface.

The DW-8000 digital delay can work as a chorus or a flanger as well.
@retroaktivsynthesizers50755 жыл бұрын
It's true. If you press SHIFT+CHORUS button on DW-8P when in 8000 mode (as opposed to DW-6000 mode), you can scroll through an array of preset CHORUS, FLANGE, and DELAY effects. It's a handy feature when you want to quickly audition a few different fx on a DW sound.

big famous synth meaning CMI? Funny because my friend gave me his DW he was like "I don't like it but there's one patch that sounds like Kate Bush"

@@retroaktivsynthesizers5075 I'm not mad because it's not free. I was blown away by how overpriced it was. But like I said I already solved my problem with a BCR2000($140). By the way I work as well and provide for a family. I'm a Teacher and If buying an $800 controller for a $600 synth isn't opulent, I don't know what would be.
@retroaktivsynthesizers50754 жыл бұрын
@@arthurallsopp9344 Great news. My product does a lot more than the BCR2000. That stuff takes a lot of time to program. More than you'd think. A typical time frame for two of us to program the firmware for one of these is around 5 months. If our controllers only sent the basic slider and button sysex and nothing else, that would be cut down to about 2 weeks. Like I said before, our product does tons of stuff that none of the things you've mentioned do. Glad you found something that suits your needs in your price range.
