Well even though DW is a terrible child, this episode is more relatable to people who went through things like this. So many young kids who go to the hospital for things from a simple procedure to treatment for a life threatening illness will experience so many emotions from sadness to anger to fear. I went to the hospital when I was around 6 years old (why? I don't wanna say and worry people) but I was confused and terrified through a lot of it. Surgeries are scary for little kids and there are a lot of mood swings kids will experience and they may end up acting unlike their usual self due to things out of their control. Sometimes family and friends will even give them more attention and treat them to special and fun things more often just to keep them happy and distracted from the pain of what they have to go through in the hospital.

Another thing that made it relatable was her checking Arthur's ears at the end. Children process things through play, and they may do pretend play as their way of processing their experience. When my niece was hospitalized for her asthma, after she came home, she had me play doctor with some stuffed animals. We gave them a physical exam, did x-rays, and gave medication (all stuff she experienced).

I’m with you. I underwent the same kind of surgery when I was around D.W’s age (5 or 6) for the same reason (a rash of earaches), so I can’t really pick on her too much for this one. Her brattiness feels perfectly within bonds for a child her age who is going through something like this. There are plenty of episodes of her displaying the kind of sociopathic behavior that spawned this series, but this episode isn’t one of them.

I will admit, I am jealouis of DW dreaming during an operation. Last few times I got surgery,, it felt almost instantaneous between when the anesthetic knocked me out, and when I woke back up.

Honestly tho waking up in the middle of surgery is a valid fear even for adults. That happened to my mom I think when she was getting her gallbladder removed (I could be remembering incorrectly and mixing up surgeries she’s had) and the doctors didn’t believe it until she started moving her legs.

It's a fear cause its a real risk. It's dangerously difficult even for planned, uncomplicated procedures. I got to shadow a lot of great surgeons despite not being one, and bedside manner is key. Confident, not cocky (unless you are the top gun surgeon 😂) and explain, be kind, and bring the a team each time 😊 it's really inspiring watching some demonstrate almost what is about to be done even if the gas was in the room instead. They are just a great team lead, and can direct an OR. 😊😊

It’s actually pretty common for toddlers to get tubes in their ears. It comes from getting a lot of colds that leads to ear infections. It can be a lifelong problem sometimes, and it’s often genetic.

Not sure why, but seeing DW with giant ears reminds me of one of my favorite gags from Ranma 1/2. Ranma is trying to get his father to explain why his childhood friend wants revenge on them. His father starts to whisper, and Ranma leans in closer....only for his father to yell in his ear! Ranma shouts in surprise, and his suspicious as Hell father says he clearly can't handle hearing the truth. All that just so he didn't have to come clean to his son. 😂

I actually had the same thing happen with my ears when I was roughly DW's age. I was perfectly calm right up until they put the anesthesia mask on me and i panicked a bit because it tasted weirdly spicy to my 4-year-old senses. Good thing I was small enough that it put me under almost instantly after that!

I underwent the same procedure at around D.W.’s age and I remember trying to take the mask off, because I had to cough and my parents drilled into me that you had to cover your mouth when you coughed. They told me I could cough with the mask on, and it wasn’t long before I was out like a light. No weird dreams, though. Just went to sleep and everything was black. When I woke up, it was all done.

Bro, I remember this episode so well because I also have really messed up ears. Like, I had to get surgery to get my eardrums put back together (I had massive holes in my eardrums, almost to the point of not having them anymore. There was just enough of them to pull back together, or something like that). So, as much as I hate DW I always had a soft spot for her in this episode. I was much older then her when I had my surgerys, and it was a different kind, but I could understand the fear of having your ears cut into and worked on. FU, DW, but just slightly less from me in this one.

This might be an anecdote, but I’ve been put under for surgery in my youth. The last thing I can remember when they put the breath mask over me was them telling me a story that I can’t even recall the details of. After that, I’m out cold until I find myself in the recovery room. No dream.

I had this exact same surgery twice as a kid. Not only that but I had to get one of them surgically removed because it refused to come out on its own like it was supposed to.
