Thank you for making me get this excellent time sink. I bought it yesterday, and did go through the first half of the tutorial then. Tonight I went through the second and started my first fort. I built the wrong workshop for my trade goods, and had 41 statues to sell when the first caravan arrived. After I bought all I could afford due to weight, I have 34 left :) I giggled like crazy and built the correct workshop and is now making figurines for next year.

When embarking, after searching for "coal" or "charcoal" you have to click on the "stone" category and then you'll find regular coal/charcoal. By default it selects the first category, which is crafts. Coke only worked because nothing can be made from coke, so the search results only have 1 category.

what are the two dogs for?
@Stevarious Жыл бұрын
Barking and biting. Dogs - even trained for war - are not terribly useful offensively against large monsters or armies, but they do serve two useful purposes. Firstly, hunterdwarves and fisherdwarves tend to wander around the map, and can be assigned dogs to guard them. This protects them from the odd hostile wildlife, and can even hold off a larger monster long enough that the dwarves can get inside your walls. I've had titans and dragons chase a single dog all over the map in the past, allowing my dwarves to flee to safety. Secondly, snatchers and thieves will try to sneak into your base and take your stuff or children, but run away when spotted, and dogs can do the spotting. You can tie up dogs on ropes or chains near points of egress to your base and never have to worry about your precious dwarf babies being raised by goblins. So it's common to bring a breeding pair of dogs on embark. They will punch out several litters of puppies in the first year, so by the second year you can easily have guard dogs protecting your entire base.
