Gil Gilman the thing that I find the hardest to believe about this it was almost 20 years ago that this was recorded. Very impressive versatility on account of the LSO as well.

I saw Mr Brubeck perform this a few years back at the Saratoga Jazz Festival in NY. His son played drums. WoW. You can see the genes in that family. I will never forget that performance.

It is sad. The world lost the greatest and most under appreciated Jazz musician of the 20th and 21st centuries. I wish I had been able to see him one last time.

This is from a dvd called Rediscovering Dave Brubeck from 2001. As far as I'm concerned Chris Brubeck is one of the greatest trombonists ever. We have all the Brubeck Boys here. The dvd shows some of their family musical sessions at home. The DVD shows no more of the concert. The numbers are available on a CD but not a DVD, "Live with the LSO: The 80th Birthday Concert" also available at Amazon et al. The only other Brubeck video footage I've posted is from the 1971 Newport Jazz Festival.

I gotta say that bassist go way over the expectiation to a classical bassist when it comes to jazz and impro. I actually love that combination because he had beautiful sound on the bass. The trombone however... lol

Thank you so much for this gem. It's delightful to see this great orchestra jamming live with a legend. Also, Brubeck's expression in the beginning and throughout is amazing, you can see that he enjoys the whole experience a great deal. Are there any more parts of this concert? And if so, could you please upload those as well? `Cause this is abso-blooming-lutely amazing. Thanks again! :)

So we've got, Dave, Bobby Millitello, Chris, Matthew and Darius Brubeck, but does anyone know who the bass player is? Cause as a bass player I gotta say that's some textbook playing right there.

Brilliant Brubeck! I have loved his music since I was a teen, (65 now), & in particular this one, I was about the only one in my class that could keep time in 7/4, the others thought it was mad. This performance was so brilliant, it made me feel very happy for Brubeck as he received the occalades he so rightly deserved.

@hellojacobhitch4545 yep,, 7 beats to the bar and a quarter note gets one beat, so there are 7 quarter note beats counted in each bar. The best way to get your head around it is to beat with your foot 3 even beats and at the same time tap with your fingers 7 beats. After the 3rd foot tap you will do 2 finger taps and start again. Easy!

@DwArFbUtTeR I agree, it's music man, if you can play anything more complex than this and have it sound as good as this, then all the power to you, in the end its what the audience likes, and this song is just pure genius, enough said.

How far we have come. We all know that orchestral arrangements add tonal sophistication to any melody but here, like many great composers of previous centuries; a simple 'folk' melody is developed structurally on the inventive platform of the orchestra; demonstrating the limitless inventive possibilities of music with a CAPITAL M.... and it still swings like hell! Unsquare dance was my first binge track before I was 2 years old. I pushed my parents to teach me how to play the 45 on our manual record player. Learning how to take the tone arm off without scratching the record, was an invaluable lesson for a young lad who was late to walking without assistance, at 18 months. Brubeck taught me how to hold my hand steady.

You guys are going all crazy over-analyzing this. This is probably seen on paper as 7/4 but is being interpreted and counted as 4+3 by the musicians. There is no such thing as 19/16, or 19/4, or 21/16, or whatever you all are talking about. That's like having a key signature with 7 sharps and 2 flats, it's too confusing. In the times in the song when it can't be counted as 4+3, then they probably just changed time signatures (most likely to something simple, like 4/4) for a measure or two.
@RMarsupial
@RMarsupial 13 жыл бұрын
@insanewarlock666 I dunno like, isn't the just how they count it, as in "ONE two THREE four FIVE six seven". I really don't think it's as complex as you seem to think - sure, it's more complex than 4/4, 3/4 but just as complex as 5/4. It's just not that coplex. For example, the Frank Zappa song, "Keep it Greasy" uses 13/16 and 23/16! 11/8 is quite popular in progressive rock, and musicians will often solo over it. I just think they are concentrating on the beat, or they would sound wonky :D
@RMarsupial
@RMarsupial 13 жыл бұрын
@insanewarlock666 Nope! The chorus is, but the verses, solos and weird interlude bits are in those weird time signatures. And sorry, it's actually 19/16 and 21/16! It's pretty much impossible to count (to anyone except Zappa and his band) since 18/16 is one 16th off 4/4 (it might seem like 4/4) and 21/16 is one 16th off of 5/4. To be fair though, I've never heard I live version with improvisation in it (the original solo was recorded seperately and spliced in).

You're not going to switch between 8/16 + 7/16 if the intended effect is 15/16. You'd lose the 4+4+4+3 implied. Same goes for 19/16. 12/16 + 7/16 may communicate (4+4+4)+4+3 effectively enough, but it's tedious to switch back and forth. Once you pass the the typical 4 or 5 beats (16/16, 20/16 or their alterations give or take a few sixteenths) I think it loses purpose. There's a good wikipedia article on unusual meters.
@RMarsupial
@RMarsupial 13 жыл бұрын
@insanewarlock666 Sorry I can't really agree with that, it's so fast that counting it sub-divided like that is just unreasonable. It's 19/16 - sorry, it exists! You can hear it as a small "hesitation" after the main beat! 19/4 probably would be silly if it was quite slow (better as 4/4 three times, 3/4 once). Listening to prog a lot, and Jazz Fusion you hear mad time sigs, like 13/16, 11/8, 7/4, (common in prog). I think I understand them quite well! :D
