Actually, the labeling of Elves is so confusing as to make your head spin. Apparently, any Elves associated with the three original families that left Cuivienen with Oromë are considered Eldar. Sundae fit in that category too, as do Umanyar and Nandor. I think the problem is that Oromë created that word to identify those Elves who would follow him back to Aman. So all Elves of Aman are clearly Eldar. Nevertheless, those who started out with the intention of good Ng to Valinor, but bailed on Oromë, and settled elsewhere along the way seem to qualify as Eldar too. Good luck sorting it all out.

In a trial run the Gods first made the Elves, realising their mistakes they then made the Dwarves.
@Glorfindel_1179 ай бұрын
Sorry, but in Tolkien the Dwarves were made first, without God's permission. Their maker didnt know what people would look like yet, which is why they're so short and misshapen. Then because Aule rebelled in making them, they were put to sleep and forced to remain dormant until both the Elves and Men had awoken and been created by God. ;P
@lunaasonininongry62979 ай бұрын
@@Glorfindel_117wait I thought Aule first made the Eleves then the Men. But a god of smiths made his own which were the Dwarves. Thats the reason why they were short, but strong and dense. Lol Eru made Elves and Men. Dwarves were creations of Aule who attempted to emulate Eru and failed. Eru had to intervene, question why he did this, and then bring them to life out of compassion. This also prompted the creation of Ents and Eagles who similarly Eru also had to assist in bringing to life. The Gods of Middle Earth... aren't really Gods. They have counterparts rooted in classical mythology but in Middle Earth they more akin to Arch Angels put on charge of keeping the whole system running. They can't actually create life themselves without going Eru. All but Melkor accepted this and his rebellion set off chain reaction leading to Dwarves, Ents, and Eagles.

The best way to overcome darkness... is to seek out the Light. We too often forget that Tolkien was a devout Christian, and that, "The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision." On that note, let me honour Tolkien through honouring the One he was pointing to, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (The words of Jesus in John 8:12) If this Light is calling you, and you'd like to find out more, please don't hesitate to contact me. We can talk LoTR also ;)

While Tolkien did write that "No Dwarf would ever mount a horse willingly, nor did any ever harbour animals, not even dogs", it should be noted that this is inconsistent with: ""Bravo!” said Balin who was standing at the inn door looking out for him. Just then all the others came round the corner of the road from the village. They were on ponies, and each pony was slung about with all kinds of baggages, packages, parcels, and paraphernalia. There was a very small pony, apparently for Bilbo. “Up you two get, and off we go!” said Thorin." The Hobbit, Roast Mutton ...and: "An odd-looking waggon laden with odd-looking packages rolled into Hobbiton one evening and toiled up the Hill to Bag End. The startled hobbits peered out of lamplit doors to gape at it. It was driven by outlandish folk, singing strange songs: dwarves with long beards and deep hoods." LotR, A Long Expected Party
@jimb90639 ай бұрын
True, although I guess the get out clause is "willingly". They might when necessary. There's a general split between those who dislike the inconsistencies, and those who like them because it gives a more authentic feel, like "real world" mythologies passed down orally can have.
@ImmortalChessDaily9 ай бұрын
assuming your quote is from people's of Middle Earth. it's tricky coz by the time the hobbit come along thorin and co are wanderes and because of this they have to unwillingly start using ponies and becoming mercenaries also which is also not dwarf like. I think we have to consider all the ages and with this not only Dwarves changed their ways. Thorins company also mounted the eagles unwillingly. at the same time I get what you saying
@hazey95149 ай бұрын
I would like to mention that he did specifically mention them not using animals in warfare so it's totally possible they would use them to carry goods. Hardy as they are even pack animals are needed for Dwarven loads (probably).
@Tar-Elenion9 ай бұрын
@@ImmortalChessDaily The first quote ('No Dwarf...') is from PoMe (Dwarves and Men ca. 1969). I don't recall Tolkien writing about Dwarves becoming mercenaries, nor do the passages in LotR* and The Hobbit indicate any 'unwillingness'. Some disappointment at losing the use of Beorn's ponies (Gandalf: ""Now you must send back these excellent ponies you have borrowed.” The dwarves were inclined to grumble at this, but the wizard told them they were fools." (TH, A Short Rest)). *early passage with cart. Later Gimli seems reluctant "I wish I could walk and not bump like a sack at Gandalf’s saddlebow.’", "‘And a Dwarf is no horseman. It is orc-necks I would hew, not shave the scalps of Men,’".
@Tar-Elenion9 ай бұрын
@@hazey9514 While not using them in warfare (i.e. no cavalry) is consistant, the "nor did any ever harbour animals", is just a late inconsistancy. Keeping beasts of burden (and even herds and flocks for food (when it can't be gotten through trade)), would seem more logical...

So where can I find about these evil Dwarves that served Sauron and fought their kindred?
@Tar-Elenion9 ай бұрын
I suspect these guys are inferring it from passages like this: "They [Goblins] did not hate dwarves especially, no more than they hated everybody and everything, and particularly the orderly and prosperous; in some parts wicked dwarves had even made alliances with them." The Hobbit, Over Hill and Under Hill ...and from this about the Last Alliance: "Of the Dwarves few fought upon either side; but the kindred of Durin of Moria fought against Sauron." Silm, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
@Enerdhil9 ай бұрын
@@Tar-Elenion The thing is, I found some evidence of wicked Dwarves over at Tolkien Gateway, not that they are always right. Personally, I can't see how any Dwarves would turn to evil, except for greed perhaps. But what could Sauron or Melkor offer them that they would be willing to kill other Dwarves for? It is unimaginable.
@barethor58699 ай бұрын
@@Enerdhil Across the books the stories only interact with 3 of the 7 houses of dwarves, we barely see or hear about the other 4 after their introduction due to how far to the east they reside. It is easy to assume these distant houses were more vulnerable to the influence of the dark lords of they sought them out. It is likely they had trade relations with the Easterlings which could further spread the corruption. Also we do see evidence of them shifting towards evil on a few occasions in the books, but mostly in regards to greed and a grudge against elves, but those weaknesses are things that Sauron could have used to manipulate in to turning some to his side.
@Enerdhil9 ай бұрын
@@barethor5869 Well, Aulë created the Dwarves. He has a history of evil connected to him (Sauron, Saruman), so maybe Dwarves are capable of evil. I know they killed Elu Thingol and stole the Nauglamir they were commissioned to bind together with a Silmaril, but kill each other? The Dwarves of Belegost and Nogrod exiled bad Dwarves rather than kill them outright. Whether it is the Battle of Azanulbizar or Five Armies, Dwarves fight for each other. Dwarves should never ally with Sauron. He couldn't get them to obey him even when they were wearing Rings of Power he gave to them.
@barethor58699 ай бұрын
@Enerdhil Just because the dwarf lords were able to resist his influence from the rings doesn't mean all dwarves can. The dwarves were not a single united force, there is no guarantee that some weren't drawn in by his manipulation, feeding their greed and envy to turn them against the other dwarves. And that is all besides the fact that he could just capture some, enslave them, and force them to fight for him, as he has done with so many orcs and humans.
