Tsunamis are among our planet’s deadliest natural phenomena. Their huge waves can wreak devastation within minutes. What can we do to protect ourselves against catastrophes of this nature?
Where a tsunami has struck once, another will strike again. It’s only a matter of time. The documentary observes leading international experts as they conduct scientific analysis of tsunamis - gigantic flood waves usually triggered by earthquakes on the seabed. The scientists’ research reveals the complex mechanics of tsunami waves, explains the most advanced prevention technologies and shows the most likely scenarios of future tsunamis.

The cave with the bats was a surprisingly interesting element to this story. Who would have thought this held so much significance and information? Scientists and geologists are such a crucial part of our lives. Thanks to the little creatures who eat the insects and poop a lot too. 😎🦇

@@beng4647no, they don't. I have seen a lot of short documentaries from Europe about Trump as a President. DW try to do the same as other media and push down Trump, but Me as many other people in whole world are tired of existing system and we want to see new faces and new rouling in the world. But DW have never graduated Trump, so they are not pushing down nations and globalist interests. They are pushing down the basic subjects and those are -narue, drugs, democasity in 3rd world countries and some food stuff, but DW is too weak to make some strong documentaries about what really happens in the world. Are they too weak or they just don't see?

There is no way to tame nature especially regarding earthquakes and tsunamis. It’s just nature doing its thing on a massive scale that reminds us how small we are. All we can do is figure out how to get out of its way while it does its dance.

A slight correction on the documentary: - 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was mostly recorded on camcorders, professional video cameras and digital cameras of tourists, news videographers and locals in the affected areas, and their videos were among the clearest audio-visual records of the fateful day. There were very few cellphone video footages of the tsunami as camera phones back then were still too expensive for most people. The cellphone videos were terribly grainy and blurry due to the technical limitations of the phones's camera sensors back then. - 2011 Japan tsunami was the first tsunami disaster to have lots of videos recorded by phone cameras of eyewitnesses and survivors of the tragedy.

Cell phone cameras weren’t that uncommon at the end of 2004 - most new phones had them. It’s just that the quality was bad

@ravss4594 That's partially true, though. To put things into perspective of socioeconomics of people in Southeast Asia, India and Sri Lanka in 2004, buying power for most people in the countries affected by the 2004 tsunami wasn't adequate enough to afford them these early generation camera phones. Only wealthy folks, people with high-paying jobs or those who worked in first-world countries with better-performing currency and well-paid salaries could buy them. Others on the other hand could not even afford to buy a brand-new 35mm film camera, let alone Nokia/Samsung/Sony Ericsson's premium-level feature phones in 2004 that were equipped camera lenses as well as digital still cameras and Handycams.

The meaning of 'tsu' (津) is a little bit different to that of 'port'. It can mean a crossing place, a place accessible to landing boats (not harbour, quay or wharf). A very gradual easily accessible coastline. It is also used to mean 'abundance'. Hence why the character if often found in place names. Indeed, I live in a city called 'Futtsu' (富津) , the next city along the coast is Kimitsu (君津) and then Kisarazu (木更津) . all in succession. Neither is the word/character limited to coastal areas as the prefectural capital of Shiga is Otsu (大津). A land locked prefecture, but with a very large lake called Biwa. Places with 'tsu' in their name are often wide open areas where waves are typically not so high as they are spread out over a distance. Therefore, a high wave in such an area is very notable and hence possibly why the massive waves are known as 'tsunami'.

the one in Japan was insane, i was shocked! i remember watching it happened live and asking myself "is this really happening right now|, you can see the waves are coming slowly and the feeling of helplessness, like you know we cant really do anything about it, even at that time we already considered ourselves as an advanced civilization and yet all we could do is watch. people, cars, and even houses getting swept like nothing. . I still get chills thinking about it to this day witnessing the sheer power of nature was unforgettable. May those who lost their lives in this tragedy rest in peace.

Tsunami height can be measured by: - Earthquake magnitude - Subduction zone length causing the earthquake - Water amount displaced by the subduction zone affected - Aggressive topographic features and height differences, including underwater zones especially near the coast (narrow zones like bays causes tsunamis to pile up more) - Land level vs sea level - As well as the seasonal tide levels

Part of what makes tsunami waves so deadly is due to their incredible long wavelength which allows them to travel vast distances while loosing little energy. Tsunamis move the entire water column from the sea floor to surface releasing an insane amount of energy.

The opening remarks are misleading, as knowledge of tsunamis, their causes, and impacts are well-documented before dec 26 2004. Events like the 1960 Chilean tsunami and the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, along with geological evidence such as tsunami-induced sedimentary deposits, marine fossils found far inland, and abrupt changes in coastal landforms, demonstrate this. The Fukushima disaster, cited here as a reactor explosion caused by the tsunami, was actually the result of flooding disabling power systems, leading to overheating and hydrogen buildup-not a direct tsunami-triggered explosion. This video’s narrative tells half-truths, misrepresenting both historical knowledge and the specifics of Fukushima.

Barring any destruction on facilities, building etc... and a land slide can close the road... some part Palu they built houses for living on sediment ground.. the quake trigger for soft ground to roll upside down.. you can find it on youtube how devastating liquifaction affect in Palu

If you watch the video completely, it explains the warning come 5 minutes later because according to the calculation, mild tsunami will come in 15 minutes, but the tsunamy defied the calculation, it came 2 minutes after earthquake. Turns out there was other event which is another fault line that was caused by the main earthquake. That was the cause of the tsunami in Palu

A: simple, move to higher grounds
@andrewjones-productions
@andrewjones-productions Күн бұрын
Easier said than done and what does one do if there is no higher ground? This is the problem that faces the people of Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Kochi is flat with higher ground tens of kilometres away and it is the prefecture on the southern cost of Shikoku, directly facing onto the Pacific and the Nakai trough. Some municipalities have built special towers (like observatory towers rather than buildings) to act as evacuation points, but whether they will be high enough is a different matter. Heading to structurally sound concrete buildings is an option, but as we saw in Tohoku, waves reached heights that completely submerged these high buildings in some areas. Another idea that was proposed and employed by some (but not many at all) are special capsules that can withstand being hit by debris and protect the occupants. A sort of lifeboat if you will. In Sendai, they have built a park which has several high mounds with not only stairs to the summit, but also a path that curves around the mounds to allow for people who are unable to climb stairs or for people with wheelchairs, pushchairs etc to climb more easily. However, such measures are few and far between an earthquake hitting Tokyo, or the Nakai trough earthquake will cause many deaths and casualties as well as vast destruction. Will. Not maybe. My own home will likely suffer from liquefaction even before a tsunami arrives. To get to higher ground will take 15 minutes by car, assuming the roads are still passable (unlikely) and about 5 minutes to an elevation of 11metres on foot. To reach the next highest point I would have to descend before climbing and that means that I am unlikely to reach that area on foot in enough time. There are no viable concrete structures near me either and the local government does not have the funds to build anything as they are financially strained and financing a project for a 'maybe' (in reality it is will, not maybe) is simply unjustifiable in the short term. This is the reality.

What we need to do is build a system which catches the tsunami 🌊 underground generating energy from it even. Pushing it up only generates the tsunamis build up

I hope my comment doesn't get deleted, because I'm apparently not following social guidelines. We humans have a big problem, when things go smoothly we forget about problems. I too had this problem until I learned and more importantly changed the way I think. We need to change and adapt, not changing nature to suit us. We seriously underestimate the power of nature and that is shown in situations like that. What is the first problem? Money. Money in the hands of irresponsible people that allow greed being our priority and not our existence. Etc... P.s.: Now quickly report and delete this comment, because it's harmful, right?!

@@elizabethroberts6215 actually it wasn't my intention, but now that you mentioned it, at least I know that it is visible. I read about shadow banning yesterday and often my comment is visible to me, but not others. Reason for that is unknown to me, but apparently my comments are not welcomed. I'm noticing this for awhile now, but it's really obvious in the last few weeks. I have a different view on life in general and there are things that needs changing in order to improve, but some people really like control and manipulation soo much, they would go a long way to achieve or to keep that. And that is probably the reason for deleting my comments. Not all, but maybe 50% And I'm not even cursing or anything like that.

sigh...the Atlantic Ocean will unlikely be subjected to a tsunami as you need large subduction zone activity. The Caribbean plate could potentially generate one, but probably not on the scale of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Focus resources on the Pacific and Indian oceans. Improve systems in these areas first.

Tsunami also happened because of shallow earthquake (6.0 ++ Richter Scale) and volcano (either explosion like Hunga Tonga 2022 or slide like Krakatoa 2018). If I am not mistaken, Lisboa aroung 1700s experienced the big earthquake and tsunami that wipe the city too. Its so much better to be prepared to prevent worst things possible.
