How coronavirus is changing the world | DW Documentary

How are democracies and authoritarian states reacting to the coronavirus pandemic? An investigative team is looking for clues worldwide and interviewing virologists, health experts and citizens. Where is the fight against COVID-19 working and where isn’t it?
Nine months after the new coronavirus first appeared, the documentary "The Pandemic Spreads" finds some initial answers to these questions. The film takes the viewer on a journey around the world: We dive into seven different countries and analyze their ways of handling the virus. We return to the putative beginnings of the pandemic in Wuhan in China. We see how Taiwan reacted to the virus earlier and more decisively than almost any other country in the world, as Europe and North America were still lulling themselves into a false sense of security. In retrospect, it is clear that the Western democracies saw the coronavirus as a local Chinese problem for far too long. Yet research from France and other European countries suggest it was probably already among us here in Europe at the end of 2019. Our viral world tour also takes us to the outsiders of the pandemic: Sweden, for example. At first the Swedes' special approach was still seen as daring, but months later it seems to have gone disastrously wrong.The biggest health and economic crisis in recent history has underlined recent global political developments: as the world power USA sinks into corona chaos, its rival China seems to have hit its stride. Will Beijing’s authoritarian regime come out on top of the crisis through its aggressive and consistent approach to the virus? "The Pandemic Spreads" shows how COVID-19 is changing our world for good.

I’ll never understand why travel wasn’t suspended in China BEFORE everyone left for the Chinese New Year holiday. We canceled a trip to Asia for early 2020 because of reports being leaked out of China. I was very aware of what was happening. The worlds leaders should have been also. When I saw Chinese airport’s & train stations filled with travelers I was shouting at the television “ shut the country down!!!! A catastrophic tragedy that didn’t need to happen.

Thanks so much for including my country Nigeria. The government imposes lockdown but provides no form of social or welfare services. Most citizens refuse to wear a mask. If you wear a mask, people laugh at you as you walk by on the streets or markets. Most church leaders and their congregations refuse to take precautions. There are large gathering in the churches with no form of precautions. Most church leaders say that wearing masks is either the way the government wants to prevent free press. Some say it's a means government has used to steal public funds. The government has embezzled almost all the funds intended for the treatments of the coronavirus. people can't get tested because it's too expensive. The shops and companies that produce cleaning supplies and face masks has purposely sky rocketed the prices. Foodstuffs and basic necessities are very very expensive. Most cleaning supplies and face masks people are able to get are those produced by students or those given as donations. The hospitals are nothing to write home about. To be honest the only place that precautions are taken are in schools and a few churches. people who are willing to donate cleaning supplies and face masks and testing kits, please do not give them to government, instead donate them to churches, schools and hospitals PS: I sincerely from my heart apologize to anyone offended by my post. I do not intend to offend anyone. I just feel people should know what's happening.

Interesting documentary. My friend (a youngish man) was living in Europe in Sep/Oct 2019 and he said at the time that he had a strange dry cough lasting 2-3 weeks. At night time he coughed a lot with a high fever, very low lethargy and low appetite. During the day he said he was still very tired, but his symptoms were not as bad. Looking back at his experience he wonders if he had the Corona virus. It could be true that the virus has been around longer than we previously thought?!

I'm really dismayed at how my country(USA) fumbled the ball and how bad the so-called experts were wrong. They said it would trickle down during the summer months but the infection rates went up and now we are headed towards the worst flu season ever and I fear it's going to spike in the USA. This pandemic has destroyed our economy and affected our way of life forever.

Actually, the virus does trickle down in the summer because we are outside breathing air. However... the infection rate went up because people went to bars and other crowded indoor places. This fall and next winter, infection will go up if we stay indoors where there is a lot of people. We'll be fine IF we stay indoor in places where there isn't a lot of people! (ex. a house / appartment, a restaurant where there isn't much people)

Last winter (march), we ended flu season earlier because of social distancing... so, we have a chance to have a "weak" covid19 2nd wave. Let's hope we don't have a big 2nd wave, because it's going to wreck the economy!

Very little change here. I live in Nebraska in a town of about 4,200 people, and people are not quarentined at all, everyone is working, and even our school is open and sports and events are being done as well. the kids have an option to wear mask or not. Some of our churches were closed for a while, but just a few weeks at the start, and people can wear a mask if they want to. We have two stores ( out of about 3 dozen) that say wear a mask, but nothing is said or done if you do not, our resturaunts have been wide open for months, after a few weeks of carry out only. McDonalds is still just drive thru. the lake areas are open, the public pool was open till school started (as usual) and if not for being continually streamed news reports that all Americans are , and have been for months quarentined in there homes, not working , schools on line and all sporting events cancelled, I think I am hearing about another planet. Once again I fail to see any advantages to living in an urban area.

I remember last year, what was there to worry about, and then all of a sudden while getting a haircut in January my barber told there was a virus in China killing hundreds of people, I looked up “virus in China” ok it’s just in China what’s the worry about, and then it was actually spreading overseas, but at the time still not in New Zealand, and then it came to NZ, that’s when the panic buying started kicking in, but I am glad thanks to Jacinda Ardern my life is back to normal, many countries have now actually stopped it which is great.

The initiative has to come from the top, the Government, the President. America was let down by President Trump. He insisted it was nothing to worry about. Here in Thailand we obediently wore our masks and practiced social distancing and observed the curfew. The kids went back to school after 5 clear weeks without a domestic case being reported. Sadly 2 people have died over the last 3 months. One, an 80 year old asthmatic and the other, a seriously ill passenger returning from Saudi Arabia.

While I hated our 6 long lockdowns here in Melbourne Australia, I only know one family who have had covid19. I am definitely blessed to be Australian. Our government gave us and keeps giving us financial support and we have FREE healthcare. Everyone should have government support esp during a pandemic and free healthcare.
