From the perspective of the physical Warsaw (versus the people, its history and soul), from this documentary I see a city bathed in trees and soviet structures. Overtime, perhaps these structures will be imploded and new ones built. Having said that, I bet the apartments in those soviet buildings are larger than apartments and condos in today's hastily built glass towers.

It would be good to see how Warsaw looked before the war. It was a beautiful city. Then see it now 2021. It has changed so fast even in the years since this documentary. I was there in 1991..There was nothing. No skyline except the Russian Culture building.

We r geting there. Meaning becoming local superpower. We use to be very strong country and one of the biggest in Europe. We could fight with other superpowers at the same time and usually win if not we still made it to exist. We had to fought with Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire of German House, Teoutonic Order, Russians (we had to occupie Moscov for 2 years) Sweden, Tatars(Mongols) Czech Kingdom and others. But finally we had lost. Losers dont write history. Winers do. Thats why in English speakin countrys Such as yours we r seen as dumb savages, barbarians. Its proven that thanks to German imigrants to the States and Canada and Iam sure Australia too. We have been viewd as stupid, dumb and very backwards cultur Group of People. Mark my words. Old Warsaw Ghetto is now mostly Muranów district of Warsaw, i lived there recently (close to Pawiak prison) and fact worth mentioning is that most of those reconstructed buildings were made using rubble of old ones. And the remains of people murdered are still there. It was the intention of post war architect of the district to rebuild this place this way, so there was no actual professional exhumantions. "Sea of rubble" was 3 meters high so they didnt dig into the basements and just builded over it (thats why most of the buildings stands on little hills). If you do any groundwork around the district you can still find human bones, old building parts etc. Some of which are right under the sidewalks (old building rubble) and visible as the sidewalk slowly collapses over time. Living in this part of Warsaw was really special, hard to explain, it was just different than anywhere else. To all souls lost in this tragedy - rest in peace. Never again war

Thank you for this documentary. I have been living in Warsaw for the last 8 years and I think it is the best city in the world. It was rebuilt from the ashes and now it is again a 2-million-people metropolis. It is my home. There is no comparison to the night view of the city skyline rising upon Vistula riverbanks in the evening. This city has the ability to survive and thrive no matter what. Documentaries like this one are important, especially today, in times of hate, discrimination, lies and misinformation - we must NEVER repeat the mistakes of the past. @@MrPaultopp No, Polish people themselves returned to live in ruins and rebuilt the city with their own hands, women and men alike, including many renowned pre-war Modernist architects like Bohdan Pniewski or Stefan Karpiński. Forgeigners from USSR were partially involved only in the construction of the Palace of Culture and Science in the centre of Warsaw.

A sad, and excellent film. I was in Warsaw in 1973 and saw the old city being rebuilt, and noticed the contrast between the beautiful, old Polish architecture and the stark, concrete blocks of the Stalinist buildings. It was the saddest city I have ever visited. In the centre there were shrines on almost every corner where the Nazis had massacred people, Poles, Jews or whoever was in their way. Let us not forget.

As a native German I lived abroad and met Holocaust survivors. Having been made aware of German crimes at an excellent school I felt responsible for these crimes and grew up with an awareness for tolerance and decency. When I watched this film, I once again realised the atrocity of it all and broke out in tears, especially, when I saw that young boy being beaten by the policeman. This film is made to commemorate Warsaw what it used to be, and the murdered Jewish community and their suffering.

Remember, the atrocities will never be your fault. They are the fault of those who actually never took responsibility for their own actions, ie Hitler , Goebbels, Himmler, etc.. their failures and the loss of WW1, the financial climate after that war and the Depression was the fault of the Jews. They made excuses as do people here in the USA do. The slavery issues of the Civil War are being blamed on people of this day and she. Like your parents, our families could barely get along during the 1800s. No one had the time to pay attention nor could they afford to.

My grandfather was polish and came to the uk at the start of the war. He was part of the polish Air Force. He was always an angry man and would never ever discuss the war. If something came on the tv about the war or concentration camps, he was roar in anger to switch it off. Sadly we will never know what he saw or lived through. He always loved his home country and only got to return once, and that was when he retired. He seemed calm and happier when he came back, for a time but, at least he got to see his family one more time. Over all the years they kept in touch by letter every single month and he always sent money, right up until he had a massive stroke and couldn’t anymore. It’s disgusting what happened to the people of Poland and especially Jewish communities all over Europe too. May they all rest in peace.

When I was a kid,in the 70s,my Polish grandma would collect our old clothes and send them over.(from US) Her family was still there & letters were sent back n forth..One time she showed us a picture.There was a boy my age (8ish) wearing my old baby blue,fake fur cuffed parka..With a smile like he hit the lottery..That's when I got the poverty/communism talk..The coat was warm,that's all that mattered.Spun my head..When I was older she told me that she would put brand new Levi's in the boxes that they could trade for $$$..

I know there was a Polish airforce based here in the UK. And they fought hard. The British Government treated them appallingly after the war, completely dismissive of all their vital help. My Grandfather never spoke of anyone in Poland, I don't think he was able to contact any surviving family. I know he came from Tarnow, and I found on-line records of his 1880 baptism. I intend to travel there after I retire.

My grandparents lived through this in Warsaw...and still despised the Soviets more. My grandpa was 19 and my grandma 21 when the war started. We aren’t Jewish but they were a part of the resistance army during the uprising. Man they had some stories...I miss them...

Siedzieli w piwnicy i żywili się czekoladą Wedla, bo taką zapłatę od firmy Wedel dostał jej wujek za naprawę samochodu. Chyba w poblizu był sierociniec Korczaka, bo ona się z takimi później dziećmi kontaktowała. Tez poznałam trochę historii, niestety babcia zmarła.

Every country suffered under Nazi occupation, but the Germans & Russians had particular animosity for Poland. It is heart-breaking & tragic the horrors that unfolded in a wonderfully vibrant country. Yet the Polish people never gave up! How ever dark the hour was, pick up ANY book of the Second World War and you'll understand how ferocious, tenacious and relentless were the Polish forces fighting for the Allies. This is one of the best documentaries I've watched on the Warsaw Ghetto. It places the ghetto in perspective to the rest of Warsaw allowing the viewer to see the scale and geography of the city districts and the ghetto. The % of Jewish people who comprised the population of the city is also emphasised. This information is missing from every other documentary on this subject. I have a far greater understanding of the subject as a result of watching this very moving and impactful film. Thank you

Agreed. This really opened my eyes to other things as well. I got a very clear sense of what the Warsaw Ghetto actually was, how it became what it was, and how it was maintained and then destroyed. I never heard or considered what the logistics of such an endeavor would involve … never considered that it involved everyone who wasn’t German. I was not aware of the plan to “erase” Warsaw and all non-German people from Poland, In fact to erase Poland itself. No doubt that was the plan all across Europe. No more Europe! Only Germany? The enormity of it … I come to the conclusion that the word Holocaust has not really been seen fully … at least in my education (born USA 1948), we were never given the depth of knowledge to really even begin to grasp the multi-dimensionality or depth of human depravity that was visited upon these people. This is for me the most powerful documentary I have seen to date on the Warsaw ghetto. Your resarchers have done an incredible job of finding original film. The little boys smuggling goods into the ghetto and then been beaten. They ran away as if they were not 41:44 affected. This video with the empty tram running through the street made a visceral impact on me as well as much of the video. 😢 Such a horrific tragedy. My great grandfather's brother Mendel Oppenheim (72 years old at the time) built a bunker as a preparation to the Ghetto uprising, where he was hiding with his sister Anna Oppenheim (aged 58), his daughters Judith Oppenheim (aged 33) and Malka Hoffman (aged 45) and her family - husband Gershon and two daughters Hava (aged 20) and Ida (aged 25) , also Mendel's son Fred Oppenheim (aged 43) with his wife Rachel (aged 38) with two children a boy and a girl aged 7 and 9. The bunker was discovered by the Germans in the first few days of the uprising, all of the family was dragged out, put against a wall and shot. I have an eye witness report. For many people this is not history, but a leaving pain. May their souls rest in peace, their blood revenged!!!!

A really good historical documentary. I know a lot about the Warsaw Ghetto but obviously not enough. I'm really touched by the strength all of the Polish people of all religions showed under Nazi occupation and then under the Soviet Union's oppression. I visited Warsaw just before the Wuhan Virus kicked in, I noted it was all post war, buildings even the beautiful old town was rebuilt albeit sensibly as it originally was. I went to the Jewish cemetery, if you get the chance to visit the city this is a must, a very moving place. God bless the Jews, God bless the Poles.

The Germans despised Poland, and killed ethnic natives just as readily as they did Jewish Poles.

I've read books and watched documentaries about Nazi Germany, I've read biographies about Hitler, and about the early movement that became the Nazi's, but never have I ever seen anything describing Hitler as a "professed Christian". He had during WW1, on the battlefield, however, something that he described as a mystical experience about Odin. The "Thule Society" cult that was the beginning backbone of those that made Hitler their figure head, had a fascination with Paganism as well, and was directly linked to German Spiritism and French Occultism (and of course anti-semittism). Other then this, Nazism was cold, pseudo-scientific Social Darwinism at it's most extreme and horrifying. There seemed to be clear plans for removing the power of Christendom in Germany, once the "problem" with Communism, Jews and Slavs was dealt with. Wehrmacht had the traditional motto of "Got mit uns" (God with us), but the SS discarded this. However it's a silly question to begin with, and if anyone claim to be a Christian and do evil acts, in clear opposition to the gospel, this don't reflect whom or what God is or do. It's written in the bible that God's ways and thoughts are not like any human. The Problem of Evil, that you seem to struggle to want to express as such, don't prove, nor disprove God, but have been used as an argument for atheism since the French "Enlightenment" philosophers.

The whole reason given for being against the Jews was about Jesus and them being the enemy of Christianity. He said this in every speech also. This may be true but publicly he was a Christian, he made deal with the Church and of course, those Germans carrying out the holocaust were Christians. I think what is so harrowing watching this film is knowing that those living, breathing people who had families and dearly loved ones would shortly cease to exist - and in a terrifying and horrific way. Even the poor shreds of humanity that survived against the odds would have memories that world surely haunt them all their lives. That dear little boy who was being beaten so harshly for nothing except trying to survive or just provide for his family, did he survive I wonder or just one of the million blessed little ones that did not. Is he just a photo or a name on the ceiling of Yad Vashem? I guess someone remembers him. So tragic a film. That k you so much to the man who had the courage to take it and to preserve it. That just means he didn't get paid for taking those videos. Like that's literally what amateur means. The opposite of professional that is doing something as your profession. It doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the work.

Amateur comes from amator in Latin - the one who loves. He knew why he was filming.

@@NenadMaljkovic I know the meaning of: amateur. What I am trying to say is: at that time there was no Uni to prepare filmmakers and those images are so unique. Without this "amateur" the professional guys will have nothing to show now. Even if the images are shaky, I think this person can be called anything, but not an amateur.

@@ValyArdeleanu Yes, if you (frequently) get paid for filming, you are professional, just like a professional football player is someone who makes an income kicking against a ball. I understand you simply mean to praise the man who shot the footage, but trying to redefine the word amateur is not the most practical way to do that. Sometimes amateurs do great things, sometimes professionals fail miserably.
