Tunisia is considered a microcosm of the Mediterranean world. On his journey, Jaafar Abdul Karim has fascinating encounters with all sorts of people, including a male belly dancer and a researcher who interprets the Koran from a female perspective.
Together with the Tunisian belly dancer and choreographer Rochdi Belgasmi, Jaafar Abdul Karim explores the capital’s Medina quarter, discussing masculinity and the stereotypes that exist about it in the Arabic-speaking world.
He also meets Dr. Sellin, a scholar who argues that the role of women in the Koran must be re-examined. In terms of women’s rights, Tunisia is the region’s most liberal country, but reforms are still needed.
Jaafar also meets young Tunisian designers hoping to conquer the international fashion world, and start-up entrepreneurs who solve environmental and sustainability problems in innovative ways.
After visiting a traditional hammam, Jaafar heads to Djerba, the largest island in North Africa. While tourists flock to its coastal resorts, life in the interior is still quite traditional. For example in Erriadh, where he visits the "La Ghriba" synagogue. Just under 2,000 Jews live in Tunisia today, half of them on Djerba.

@Tenast_

Hopefully they will. There are is big project starting in Tozeur ( South Western Tunisia ) And others across the South to produce electricity using solar panel. The situation is Tunisia is not stable at the moment. The EU will only invest and trust stable countries. Hopefully all the politicians get a grip on them selves. Sit down and find a solutions to the problems facing the country. The future is renewable energy. Solar and wind 💪 Morocco 🇲🇦 is doing a great job. Greetings from an : Amazigh-Tunisian.

I was born and raised in Tunis, the capital. I have never heard or used the word "bacha" 😂, please, you are in Tunis not Cairo. It seems that you are a little bit confused. And, of course, Tunisia was COLONIZED by France. It is a COLONY not a protectorate. This is another confusion from the very first seconds of the documentary.

While I enjoyed the look into Tunisia, DW does seem to focus on more of the privileged and wealthy citizens than really trying to get to know the people who actually make up the majority of the population. Sadly it seems they are becoming more and more like typical news magazines that focus on glamour and prestige. Given how their left-leaning politics has only grown it's no wonder. I miss the days of Anthony Bourdain who was never afraid of being part of every culture he came into contact with in his travels.

in response to your takeaway, i have to say that for a little while, yes, the youth were motivated, but unfortunately, like their parents, they have limited patience. They would soon rather a return to the past and the devils that they know, then to wait too long for an unknown future. And by too long, I mean about a decade.

@@sunnyday7102 if what you say is true, why does this video go so deep into how they are fighting to be free and break from hundreds years old traditions?

Regarding Inheritance Law, male heirs receive a larger portion as they must support support their children & wives, and pay the dowry. Women are exempt in this regard. Don't be fooled by the propaganda.

I am always amazed by those who think that they have the true version, the right version of things, and want the whole society to adopt their views. Peak narcissism.

These people are European settlers their ancestors have stolen this from Africans. Let's be realistic, Tunisia is in the continent of Africa where the original civilization first started😢

Stop fetishizing about north Africa if north Africa is black than south Europe and all the Mediterranean countries are black too, we are a Mediterranean race not monkeys.

We wuz everyone except sub-saharanz🦍💪🏿🦍💪🏿 North Africa is located in the Mediterranean, closer to the middle east and southern Europe than 90% of sub-saharan Africa, very far away from the equator, of course they have typical olive skin color. Only people with sub-human level intelligence like you think continents separate skin colors. Even the word 'Africa' came from a roman north african province called Africa Proconsularis, modern day Tunisia, so that word has nothing to do with sub-saharan primitives in the first place.
