As a Maldivian I am surprised you mentioned us The resorts and the islands are beautiful but the truth is most islands don't have enough infrastructure such as higher education, healthcare, etc That is why the majority live in Male and Hulumale

it all started because of the extreme centralization around Male, gov ignored the rest of the country and allocated all the resources into Male instead, recently the gov has started decentralization efforts but its honestly too late now, all the other islands are decades behind male and so we have this overcrowded concrete mess

Thank you for covering this often forgotten part of the world. I was there for a day in 2014. I was a mechanic onboard a Canadian naval vessel transiting towards south east Africa, and we stopped at the Maldives for fuel. A small barge came out to fuel us with a couple guys on board and we got to chatting a bit. He didn't want to estimate a proportion, but a lot of the city's population have no papers and don't officially exist. Tap water isn't safe to drink and bottled water ranges $5-8 per bottle. He and his crew were walking around bare foot, they're also checking fuel tank levels on their barge by sticking their heads in and looking without anything to protect them from fuel vapaours. For contrast, our entire crew have steel toed boots at all times. If we had to go into a fuel tank it would be pumped out completely and ventilated for 24 hours before we would even consider testing the air. If there were urgency to go into the tank for whatever reason I'd be wearing the same breathing apparatus we use for fire fighting. It's clearly one of the many sad places in the world where life is cheap. Not a spot I would choose to go for a vacation, as I wouldn't like the thought of what I'm sponsoring.

Errr not to disagree with you completely, but the truth is a little darker. The person you spoke to was likely a foreign expatriate from Bangladesh. They most likely had their papers stolen by their employers which has become common practice. They have very little protections for anything, almost like UAE. Life is not cheap with sky high rents same as anyway, but our tap water is actually very safe to drink. People just love drinking bottled water bcs classy or whatever. The water is only 2 CAD for a 5L bottle.

Thanks for the video! Just some notes from a Maldivian. 1. Malé, contrary to how it's spelled, is pronounced "Maa-le", not Maley (best way I can explain is to elongate the "a", and end with a French style "le"). 2. Yes, it's deeply overcrowded in Malé, you can't walk on the road without bumping into every other person on the sidewalk. It is not fun to live here. 3. I actually laughed at 3:00 because yes, ironically the beaches in Malé are actually very ugly and unsanitary. Touché. 4. At 4:18, this point is not necessarily true, Malé City is administratively considered to comprise Malé proper and the nearby islands of Hulhule, Hulhumale and Villingili, with plans to expand the metropolitan area to include other nearby islands in the future, and Addu City is administratively considered to be the entire Atoll of Addu, not a single island. Although Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi are indeed single island cities. 5. Yes Local level Island Council Elections are mostly... just voting for your friends or family lol, politics aside. 6. To summarise the main point of the video (which is broadly correct), everyone lives in Malé because thats where all major government services, education, healthcare and jobs are located, and where the government has always historically been. Like every other country, everyone moves to the main city for better opportunities and living standards. And it doesn't help that successive governments continue to prioritise almost all major development to Male over other islands. 7. I have literally never heard anyone call Hulhumale "Hope City". And land reclamation efforts in and near Malé aren't necessarily with the intention of avoiding rising sea levels, Hulhumale specifically was built because of a housing shortage and overcrowding in Malé. 8. Truthfully, none of our successive governments have ever really prioritised the issue of rising sea levels because our domestic internal issues usually are often so desperate that they don't leave much breathing room to address the issue of rising sea levels properly or with any urgency, and yes the rampant corruption doesn't help either.

I visited the Maldives 10 years ago. At our resort a few things were quite fascinating: 1. Yes, the whole island was no higher than 1 meter. I could literally stand with my feet in the water and see the other side of the island from where I stood. (Not true of the widest point, which was around 400m) 2. The German lady working at the local clinic was absolutely loving it. She was there on a six-month assignment in paradise. 3. Every day the boat full of water would come, so they could water the gardens and other landscaping. Most of the greenery would die without imported water. 4. Most of the workers that I met were from Sri Lanka.

Nice to see my country represented here, also idk if you covered it, but the neighbouring Hulhumale (to the right to Male) is an artificial island (that is still being expanded) which is built to solve the over crowdedness of Male. Ironically when outsiders view the other non-city islands without visiting you would assume they are poorer, but not really, you don't earn as much, but the cost of living is like 200% less lol. Poverty is like non-existent, but on the flip side you can't really earn more than what you already make.

Fun Fact: Malé means small in Czechia also in Czechia you Can say small like: Malé, Malý, Malá
@prize9550
@prize9550 3 ай бұрын
Also fun fact: Malé probably means "fish blood". Coming from the Maldivian words: "Mas"(fish) and "Ley"(blood). Combining to make Masley, then shortening to Malé over time. The reason why it's called fish blood is because in the olden times, due to the fishing industry, chopping up fish in the coast, the blood of the fishes would make the surrounding water red. Though this could just be a myth
@mootssss
@mootssss 3 ай бұрын
@@prize9550 According to two scholars, Young and Christopher, who delved into the etymology of our island names, the actual meaning is lost in the fog of the past. The version I was told is that Malé comes from "Maa Ley", "Maa" meaning big / great, and "Ley" meaning blood. So Malé = The great blood. But there is also the theory that Malé could mean "big Island", as "lé" may have been a suffix to indicate land or island (or some other geographical entitiy) which is lost in the vocabulary today. There are only very few islands which are larger than Malé in the Maldives and, in that sense, it makes sense to call the island [maa-lé] big island. The island may be called so because of its significance rather than size. In any case there are multiple theories for this.

I live in Ireland. I've also found the population of Ireland interesting in terms of where everyone is. The country's population is about 5 million. The capital and largest city in the country, called Dublin is home to around 1.5 million which is around one third of the country's population. The 2nd largest city in the country called Cork only has around 200K compared to Dublin's 1.5m.

@@hugosetiawan8928It's aight if you are in the upper middle class of income. Else it's not great. Rent is very high. My uncle used to live in a small old rundown apartment with 1 bedroom and a living smaller than your average room that also has a small kitchen. That apartment cost them around 800-900 dollars a month for rent. And he has to live with his close family (wife, daughter and mom). Pretty much every new family has both the parents working just to make the money to pay the bills. Which is especially bad because Maldives is first or second in the world in divorce rates (I attended the wedding of a couple that broke up 2 days after marriage, still in honeymoon. Reason: The guy was into drugs) Drug money in this country is crazy. Yet it's never talked about, probably because the elites are in on it too The city is also very loud. Everyone owns a moped or a motorcycle. The streets are absolutely filled with them. Living on the bottom floor or near the bottom could would fuck me up Basically, if you don't own land here, forget about living in malé. It's not worth it.

Great video. I was wondering if you were gonna mention Hulhumale'. (Also your pronunciation killed me. Its Who-lhu(Stress the L)-Male'. But no worries its a weird word.) No one calls it Hope Island btw. The majority of people technically move for education and job opportunities. A lot of kids move there without their parents, mainly to relatives or friends' houses because their parents believe they would have a better education and opportunity and they end up staying in Male' because Male' is the better choice. You shouldn't forget about Villingli or Villimale next to Male'. It's like the village next to the city but on 5 mins away by boat ride. Also we are talking about buying land in Australia like Tuvalu but some people just won't face facts and make the choice.

As a Maldivian, i have never heard someone call Hulhumalé Hope city. I really only remember it being called Youth city lol. Though most of this video is correct, with a few exceptions. Another comment details it very well. Also not to be that guy but, It's pronounced "Maaley" not "Muhley". Same thing goes for Hulhumalé. It's pronounced "Who-lhu", with your tongue kinda rolled back while touching the roof of your mouth. (I have no better explanation i suck lol). Its a bit off-putting by how you pronounce but its understandable, they sound very strange from the perspective of a foreigner.

IDK about that "sinking island" theory... I live on one, and we made.... There is no ENG word for it, but let's say a little port. And it was always around 10cm above sea, and 25 years has passed, and it is still above sea lvl. TBH around 10 years ago it would sink during tides, now it does not... But again it's sea not en ocean, and it's Adriatic Sea so yea that's the info about that.

Island countries, such as those in Polynesia, by many measures, have the most severe overpopulation problems, badly exacerbated by climate change. But since their total populations tend to be pretty low, they are somewhat invisible.

I've traveled a decent amount in Polynesia, and I'd say only O'ahu is "overpopulated," the others aren't' really"overpopulated," they just don't have the infrastructure to deal with their current population. Which leads to things like traffic jams.
