Germany has too few healthcare workers and is trying to plug the gaps with recruitment drives in poorer countries like Albania. As a result, many young and well-trained people are packing up and leaving the country.
Word has got around in Albania that the German health and care sector has a skills shortage. Many qualified healthcare workers have decided to leave for Germany. In Tirana, twenty-two-year-old Alketa Kaja is doing a special German language course for healthcare and nursing to prepare for her new life. A German clinic has offered her a job and is paying the course fees.
Only 50% of healthcare workers trained in Albania remain in the country. One of them is Kastriot Qehaja. Even though his job is strenuous and poorly paid, he doesn’t want to leave his country. Someone needs to look after the elderly people whose children have gone to work in western Europe.

I have been fascinated with Albania for a very long time and watching every documentary available about Enver Hoxha times and the turbulent 90s the country experienced, similar to what happened in Bulgaria, where I come from. I did a road-trip across Albania last summer and I am even more captivated by this special place and its warm people. I wish prosperity to this incredible nation and I hope to return soon. It was under the Ottoman Empire from 1506 to 1912 then independent then after the war it was a stalinist country ruled by Hoxha from 1944-1985. It has been waiting to join the EU since it applied in 2009 and since 2014 has been an official candidate. Accession negotiations began in July 2022. They think it will take until 2027 to become full members.

This video brought tears to my eyes. Especially when the nurse visited the 90 year old woman. It was really emotional to watch these good hard working people and the struggles they face. I’m based in Tirana and I constantly struggle with the dilemma of staying or leaving. To live in such a beautiful country and to have these dilemmas is tough. I’m especially sorry for young people who don’t see a future here and their parents being alone. No idea how this will be ever properly mitigated by the Albanian government. It is a very complex issue. I know this is a problem across southern and eastern Europe as well. It sucks.

The government can't solve this because it's one of the main culprits for it. Directly you can only improve yourself and this consequently improves everyone around you. And you can only help those who are willing to accept your help. You Albanians have an enormous potential in tourism because of your hospitable culture and breathtaking nature. You're also good in learning foreign languages. The start up capital can always be obtained by working in let's say Switzerland for some time. And even without it, a competent tour guide with a good sense of humor can make a decent living almost anywhere in the world. Many great places to learn how to deal with tourists and run tourist resorts are found in Switzerland in Austria and they're mostly willing to hire motivated employees.

Just came back from Albania 3weeks ago, and the place surprised me with many opportunities. 10+ skyscrapers are built near the city center of Tirana, and another bigger airport will be built soon, the country is undergoing a huge economic reconstruction. But I feel It will take 10 years before people can start enjoying a decent life. As for the salary gap, $500 vs $10000 ( USA nurse) monthly, younger generations don't have patience which I understand as well. Great European country, people are nice, God bless.

Its money laundering from drugs man. No politics for the young generation, the government works just to gather wealth for themselves and keep the population as ignorant as possible so they can stay in power because newer generations are faster to catch up to their bs and vote the different direction so they are making miserable to create a future in our country and leave.

As someone who also comes from a Balkan country and who also left for a better life in Western country - I can't say I blame anyone for leaving. The fact is that these Balkan countries are filled with old people, old thoughts, old traditions and sadly old mindsets. This last thing is what pushed me personally to leave and never look back. Albania, and all other balkan countries are great to visit, to go for a holiday...but to live there? No thanks. Too much bureaucracy that doesn't work, too much corruption and too much primitive mindsets. I personally will not waste my life trying to change people....they're free to think any way they want. And I am free to leave. And so is everyone else....and that's what's happening. Sad but true.

and they want to repeat old patterns. Of course, its not just corruption and nepotism, its also pressure of foreign powers because of Kosovo (well technically speaking, mines, resources, exploatation). And this could have been solved very very easily like Denmark, Faroe islands. But yes, older people do not want to listen to diff ideas, or maybe they arent allowed to change the pattern. Why is it that USA UK has to control this region and wont let us be part of orderly society like Swiss or Germany? Who profits of it? Not me. So, good luck to you, i hope we dont end in another war considering how they started arming all of Europe. Albania is building a 2B dollar military base so.... Due to sad exp from the 90s, i dont like this but nobody dares say it. And this story goes for every country in the Baalkhans.

This is the biggest curse of the Balkan. God has blessed us with beautiful people, stunning nature, strong mentality and work ethics - yet, the young generations are fleeing the Balkan countries with a one-way ticket. This is our punishment for all the wars, conflicts and hatred from the past decades. The young people are leaving with full right to do so - they don't want to be a part of the suffering we've been through, and they don't have to. Watching this documentary about my beloved country, Albania, has left me feeling both saddened and nostalgic. Seeing how many young people are leaving the country is truly distressing. As someone who left 23 years ago, I understand the complex reasons behind their decisions. However, it also serves as a reminder of the potential that lies within Albania and the need for positive change. I am from Albania and I feel terribly sad seeing those people smile when they say they want to leave as soon as possible. I don't blame them thought. The salaries are extremly low and the working condtions are not the best. Cost of living is on a raise and there is no way for a student to afford it alone. Goverment on the other hand is doing nothing to stop this from happening actually, sometimes they look like they want the people to leave.

No social life, no friends, no more coffee in the bar, nothing Albanians like living outside and spending time with friends and relatives, moreover are talkative people, while in germany u can leave 15 years in a builduing and not knowing nobody. And they are sent by german federal governement to small towns, where there is more need. It is ok to go there only if you go with your partner or wife/husband. Much better going to Italy where culture is almost the same. Think twice before going or go there, work 5 years, make the money for buying an apartment in the seaside and go back home!

@@Alexander-rr6yn 7000€ l'anno?

As a now disabled RN, immediately struck me how a good horse or donkey would make rural rounds so much easier. In Appalachia midwives relied on horses for a long time. There is nowhere that nurses are well paid, valued and able to raise their children in security in the US and now see is global. Additionally I would never tell a sick elder of the healthcare crisis,it depresses them and demoralizes. I tried to make everyone feel secure, cared for...took a huge toll on my body.
