This week, ‪@thedweezilzappa‬ made an appearance on ‪@RickBeato‬ 's channel to talk Van Halen and INSANE mind-blowing phrasing concepts! Here's what I took from it, and how you can apply it to YOUR playing!
Phrasing inside the pentatonic scale in groups of 5's and 7's might seem like a weird thing to do, but with a little bit of understanding, it can change the way you play guitar! These concepts don't have to be limited to Frank Zappa Freak Outs, you can slip them into your playing no matter which style you're playing: country OR western! I'm gonna show you a great way to implement these ideas into your playing, and give you a great lick to practice it with. Let's GET INTO IT!

I scoured the internet for tabs to Echidna’s Arf in the late 90’s and in the section Dweezil played in the Beato video, those tabs all had big stretches. Since I have smaller hands, I re-tabbed it and 25 years later, I see that Dweezil and I play it the same way 😂

I saw Dweezil play in August in Tarrytown, NY. My son and I had 2nd row plus the VIP pass to see a soundcheck and meet the man. He was amazingly gracious and humble, and the show was INSANE! One of the greatest guitarist I've ever seen live! ❤ FZ is still my fav guitarist, maybe along with Alex Lifeson and Mikael Åkerfeldt.

that was an awesome interview. I have a short attention span and I still got through it. The best part for me was when they talked about two hand tapping how Eddie tapped up and Dwezil tapped down. My tapping sucked because I always tapped down to avoid strings. I started tapping up and my tapping took off. Also I love the very Zappa playing riffs with xylophone accents in the beginning. Lol got the reference/homage. really enjoyed the lesson, always look forward for more.

I thought the same thing: You would think that one of the most stereotypical sounds you can get out of playing guitar is just doing minor pentatonic but what Dweezil was showing was basically just how much phrasing radically changes how everything sounds. Also reminded me a lot of how extremely different Guthrie Govan can sound for example with very unique phrasing as well.

I thought Eddie used metal picks, as he claimed that holding them in his mouth while fingerpicking or tapping in the studio is what caused his cancer (he believed the metal acted as a conductor for the electromagnetism surrounding him). Okay, so I look at that riff and thought, hay, didn't my biological step-uncle's best friend's former roommate do a video on string skipping pentatonic scales a while back? Sure enough, he did. How about two exercises for the price of one? How about shades of Gary Moore with that roll-over to make it a full on hat trick? Play the 5 note portion exactly as written. E: 13-10, B: 13-10, G:12 For the seven note portion, instead of stretching up a step to grab the high note, go to the string below and grab the back note on the next (higher pitched) string. B: 13-10, E:10, B:10, G:12-10, D:10 Now, if only I could play it a Ben speed.
