Is it true that American schools actually have security guards and lockdown drills? Even in the stab-happy UK where knife crime is a big problem, there is nothing like this. The only security guard is a depressed assistant head teacher who is just waiting to reach the pension age.

Canadian here. 🇨🇦 My boys’ high school is unlocked. They are greeted by the staff on “Kiss n’ Ride” duty, but really more as a “Hello” in the morning. As a parent, if I need to drop off a forgotten book, or pair of shorts for gym, or something, I simply walk in the front door and follow the polite sign at the entrance that states, “Welcome Visitors! Please make the office your first stop!” And the secretaries are bustling around and usually just tell me to leave the item on the front shelf. The silly thing is, even when the door IS locked, no one would THINK TWICE about buzzing them in, or opening the door for someone. We simply do not consider this an issue.

The best way I can put it into perspective for Americans, did a school shooting ever happen it would be my nations biggest news story for the year, if not the decade by far, and if it somehow happened to a point where we would need police and security at school, I can’t imagine a world where the whole nation wouldn’t grind to a halt, until it is fixed, it is actually insane that you guys somehow think it needs to be a normal thing in life.

At my school in America we have armed police officers that patrol the school. We also have drills that involve turning all the lights off and locking the doors. Sometimes these drills even involve having to walk in a line to an assembly with our hands up and in front of us. Also our classroom doors are thick wood with a window but there are two panes of thick glass with chicken wire in the middle so nobody can force their way into a classroom. And yes, school shootings are almost everyday news reports. They are so common I don’t even bat an eye at a school shooting report. It’s just how it is here.

Germany is 28 times smaller than America, they have guns banned and still had a dozen shootings even if it is within this century. Germanys population is 1/3 of the us. It’s not comparable when the us is so much bigger, we are experiencing third world country levels of problems when it comes to security especially because of our border and immigrant problems.

We have a police officer coming to our school every thursday but he just there to consult parents and kids. Basically he's just supposed to scare the kids who commit small crimes (vandalism, we have lots of graffiti and stolen soap) so they don't end up doing actually bad stuff. Ig being send to the police office is more effective than just the principles office. Apparently that's pretty normal for schools here in germany.

@@jsas2047 I didn’t say there weren’t any public or private schools. What I meant was that you can’t directly compare private schools with public schools. I live in Germany I went to a public primary school, there was no security guard there, just like in most public schools. However I did go to two different private schools, the first one I went to also didn’t have a security guard. The second private school I went to was a European school, there is a security guard there. If you were to compare a European school to a public school in Germany you would see just how dissimilar they are to one another. I hope this was clearer than my first comment. Same here in Switzerland and it's even normal to let 4 year old walk alone to the kindergarten. My daughters kindergarten (in the morning) and afternoon care were in different places (less than 1 km walk). It's just normal. The funny thing is, when they start going to the kindergarten they are so proud wearing their 'kindsgibändli' (children's ribbon?) and two years later, when they start going to school there are so proud that they don't have to wear them anymore.

We had security protocols, like doors only being unlocked 3-5 minutes between classes and then you have to be buzzed in at the front, but I and most males in my class, all brought pocket knives to school. Literally not an issue unless you have some kids off their rocker. Which means they shouldn’t be in Gen Ed in the first place. Where I live concealed carry on college campus (which requires you to be 21) is protected. As far as I’m aware it hasn’t been an issue. Only school shootings we’ve had (in my lifetime that I remember atleast) have been school resource officers having accidental discharges. I graduated less than a decade ago

In Australia, you just walk in to school. We have lockdowns for randoms adults wandering in on school grounds, but its usually a parent who forgot to notify the school they're picking up their kid ealy for doctor appointments and such. Most schools are surrounded by residential areas with local shops nearby within walking distance. Plenty of public transport nearby so most kids are dropped off by parents or just take public transport, or even just walked to school. But we also have school uniforms, kind of hard to not be noticed. Plus, the schools are built differently than most of the world. Not just big block buildings. The buildings are at max 1-3 stories high. Easy access to outside or a green space nearby. Fairly big area because its spread out more because we have space and only build up in cities. Plus, most schools has less than 1500 people on the grounds at any point. Most of the teachers and staff are known so and so randos get noticed fairly quickly. Also, we have great support staff for kids who need help and so we don't really get school shootings or even just general fighting since they quickly get broken up and we have a cop who also doubles as the school social worker who also quickly deals with it and can arrest or detain students and do search warrants for drugs or weapons. It rarely ever happened whilst I was at school, except a girl who hid Vodka in her watervogels and a guy who brought pot brownies to school. Or my brother who was dumb enough to bring my dads spray prainter nozzle to show off to his friends.

for all people outside the us wondering here’s how it works, I’m 14 and for as long as I can remember we’ve done drills, in the past five years, we’ve done more code red drills, meaning lockdown - in case any stranger or criminal was in the area the class would stay quiet and all huddle on the floor in a corner or underneath a counter, in a closet, bathroom, etc. the lights would be off, and the teacher would put a little curtain or drape down on the door so that you can’t we through the window and they would lock the door - depending on the state you live in the drills codes will be a bit different for Florida (I wont say the specific district bc I don’t wanna give too much info) white - bomb Blue - fire (we j go in lines outside to a specified area) red - lockdown yellow - minor lockdown( a criminal is being chased around the area, everyone needs to stay in class, and the teacher can keep teaching quietly) green- all clear, everything is fine ( used after red or yellow) it’s state mandated for every school to practice these drills a certain amount of times every year - the past couple years they’ve been getting better technology and alarms to go off for code reds bc of the shootings. practice drills the way we practice them is kinda messed around wt depending on the teacher but usually after a school shooting would be on the news, we do more drills and everyone’s serious abt it and not messing around. code red: - windows r shut - lights off - class is hidden somewhere away from the door inside the class to practice it they announce that we have it on the speakers, we’re sitting on the floor like five minutes and they’ll say something like “ code green, all clear, the date is x, my name is x principal” when it’s not a drill and actually happens it’s usually bc the school is in a neighborhood and a criminal is j running around a couple blocks away, or a stranger has entered campus (which is usually j a parent who doesn’t know how to properly check in for whatever they’re doing there) however, school shootings do occur, many have happened in Florida, a couple not too far from where I live or where my schools have been, and it is scary code blue - fire drill (alarm sound goes off ) - leave in a line to your corresponding exit - teacher counts everyone outside - then they call u back in they make us practice this one a lot, don’t know y tbh, no fired every rly happen, but you miss like 20min class time 🤷‍♀️ code white - no drill they’ve never done drills for these, it’s not state mandated bc we would j do what would happen during a fire drill which is to evacuate and green and yellow r just basically red but all clear or just not that bad that’s it - oh and also - we have (depending on how big the school is) like three or five police offers on campus j walking around and we have security checks for public schools that were near school shootings or had school shootings in the past, but public schools in suburban or richer areas don’t as far as ik, my school doesn’t but I’m in middle school ( grade 6-8) which isn’t in the rest of the world, but in the us, middle schools don’t typically have school shootings so idk any middle schools that have security checks, j police officers

The overall mentality is different - we usually don't see people as dangerous and it seems to work out. I am not sure how you see people. Over here, we put more effort in keeping children away from child molesters (my daughter was 2 years old when she had her first "don't keep bad secrets" and "don't violate boundaries others set or let them violate yours" lesson) When I was in elementary back in the 90s, we had 3 types of drills: fire, nuclear attack and hostile person - but only because my village was near a high security prison and a few years earlier inmates escaped and took hostages. In that prison were also some well-known child rapists and serial child murderers. Btw fleeing a prison is not a crime in Germany because you have the urge to freedom and no one cannot take this from you. You have to take responsibility for what crimes you are possibly committing during your escape, though.

There are not security guards in american schools. This is misleading. American schools sometimes have something called a Student Resource Officer, whose sole purpose is to counsel students in crisis. They dont really arrest people, and instead act as someone who helps nudge you in the right path. These Student Resource Officers tend to be part of the local police, but are unique to the school. They dont exist for security (trust me, I got caught with drugs and all he did was make me write a report on the drug, and its side effects. A normal cop would of arrested me.) And IF they carry a firearm (which mine did, but most dont.) its a standard police issue pistol, as they are a police officer, and in some inner city trash heaps, one could be helpful in areas with gangs.

@BitTheByte 7 ай бұрын
@@EnbyOccultist Yeah... no. My school NEVER had any sort of metal detectors. The most we had was a SINGLE officer whose entire job was to help kids break the cycle of addiction and crime with care and compassion. Yes, this officer did have a gun, they ARE a police officer, but they were NOT security. None of our windows had shutters, we had our drills, sure, but ultimately my school looked nothing like yours. I come from a military family, and have gone to over 12 schools all over the country (primarily outside the military bases, in in the greater community). Some in more rural areas, some in more urban areas. I have NOT come across a single school like that. Im not saying you are lying, because I can totally believe some schools might feel the need for protections like that (Especially if they live in particularly high crime areas) What I AM saying is that for the most part, that is the exception. Schools dont get shot up at the rates the stats would have you believe. When you consider ALL shootings (a negligent discharge in the parking lot of a school at 2:34 am, or a lawful shooting of a criminal by a police officer in the campus area) a school shooting, of course its going to inflate the numbers. Obviously youd want that number to be zero, HOWEVER access to guns is not the deciding factor in that. Access to guns have only gotten more restricted in the past 30 or so years, but shootings have increased several times over. If access to guns was the deciding factor THEY SHOULD BE GOING DOWN. What is actually happening is the breakdown of the american populace. Mental health is not taken seriously in America, and hasnt been for so long, and the cycle of broken grandparents raising even more broken parents, raising critically broken children has to snap somewhere. When it costs a day and a halfs wage to see a therapist for a one day session, nobody is going to do it, except for the rich.

Same in Australia. Some of the much bigger schools will have security, but they’re mostly there for lesser crimes like stealing, drugs, physical assault. It’d be very rare they’d encounter shootings, stabbings, life threatening crimes. Most schools you could easily walk into, but anyone suspicious gets the admins attention pretty quickly. You’ll be asked what you’re doing/signed-in, may ask you to leave, and refusal means the police will be contacted. In Australia, emergency services respond extremely quickly to schools. The police would be walking in the door before you even knew they’d been called.

The high school I’m attending right now has 3 full-time security guards and one security guard in training that regularly come into the bathrooms and around campus for kids who’re truant or vaping. I sometimes get harassed for “phone use” when phones aren’t allowed or get quested on where I was going (with the bathroom pass in my hands??) if I go out during class to go to the bathroom or library. It’s not even a crazy huge school, maybe 850 kids. We have super strict adult check-ins and early dismissals too. Feels like jail tbh 😭

In Indonesia, the highschool students often have a small scale wars against other schools for no real reason besides spite. We call it "Tawuran" They used makeshift weapons like bats, nails on wood planks, chains, and metal poles. No guns, but I've seen some bringing bows and slingshots. There were casualties of course, my friend was one of them. Even then, they do it outside of the school district and it's still somewhat safer and rarer than US' school shootings. Last year only happens twice as far as I know and it's getting fewer and fewer (possibly after online schools and stuff).

Writing then suddenly the room filled with poisonous gas. Students started to shouting. My face was buring. I almost die. Many of my classmate got admitted in hospital. I still remember carrying my friend to her house. Luckyly No one die. ( there was a huge fight in the road in font of our school. In the US, you can't even look at some secretary's office without gettin domed. Just touching the fence at the White House draws the attention of the snipers on the roof.
