I think one of the great things about this episode is that so many people could look at it and see it as an allegory about mental health, being gay, bisexual, transgender, or being neurodivergent. Historically, with any TV show or movie similar to 73 Yards, the shows live on for decades and are still talked about because they have an aspect of the story that can be interpreted in numerous ways by people from all walks of life. I'm not sure RTD sat down and thought, "I'm going to write something that can be an allegory for 10 different things", but it certainly seemed to happen whether he meant to do it or not. Great video as always!

My theory is that Ruby has reality warping god powers like the pantheon, but is not aware of them and can't control it. Kinda like how the Doctor is different from other time lords in how he can't quite control his regenerations. As for the snow, it seems to appear whenever Ruby is close to deviating from her predestined path. "I think it's a warning" as the doctor says. In space babies the memory changed so that Ruby's mother would "warn" the Doctor. In Boom it's when she nearly dies. In 73 yards, it "never snowed again" because there was no Doctor around to warn. Ruby is creating the rules for this "suspended" tineline without knowing it. She made it so Roger Ap was mad jack. As for the plot I think it was all a test by the other Gods to see how she would change the world when separated from every possible companion. I don't think it's a coincidence that Susan Twist hiker was the first "victim" of the woman. Susan could be another god who, right there manifests the "everyone runs away screaming" rule.

The one question that bugs me is, who built the fairy circle? It had to be someone who knew what Mad Jack would be someday. Even if we hold that Ruby somehow turned whatshisname into Mad Jack, someone still made the fairy circle in the first place and put the RIP Mad Jack note in there. This feels like a Bad Wolf thing that, after they do the big reveal (like the Doctor himself creates the fairy circle later this season), things will add up. Once that's in place, I'll be able to enjoy this episode more. As is, I enjoy it for its concept done well, but it's hard for me to embrace it until I can understand that fairy circle. Like, imagine "The Girl in the Fireplace" if they never explained why the ship was so intent on getting Madame de Pompadour's brain. That's about where I am with this episode: I like it, I'm intrigued by it, but it doesn't add up.

Ruby probably found the Fourteenth Doctor before UNIT. He mentions the UNIT and goes to investigate the woman and the same happens to him as everyone else. He tells Ruby to leave him alone. I don’t know, not airtight but simple enough that it doesn’t break the episode. It wouldn’t make sense to film this because it’d mean getting Tennant back for one scene but this is Ruby’s episode and she has no connection to Fourteen and it does really just break worldbuilding in other episodes

I thought it odd that she managed to keep the exact same smart phone for 20 years, or that they intentionally called out that she had the same light command technology when she was younger. But it all makes much more sense with the context you brought up of the timeline being suspended, as technology in general doesn't seem to have changed at all after the faerie circle. And, for a show that is all about speculative fiction, it makes sense for such an oversight to be intentional, especially after calling attention to her level of technology a few times in the first time period

Now as am I listening to you, I have a feeling that Ruby got entangled by the fairy magic and her fear of abandonment got mixed into it, because it's a big one for her. Then she got to experience how her life would work out when that fear materialises. She, I mean the 73 yard lady, but she, pushed out all the people that wanted to help. And she was hesataintant to help others (the other lady there, name starts with M) or open to them (dates). She used it for advantage and a big one for that (with the prime minister) it wasn't just bad, sad life. But in the end, when she have seen and understood it all, she changed her messege and helped her younger self and encouraged her, to not relife that experience. It's her working out her issues.

I think the Flux told two stories: The Grand Serpent (Rassilon) being banished into deep space, making a deal with a trickster. This causes the Doctor's 14th regeneration, leading to "Wild Blue Yonder" and then BiGeneration. This leads to the Doctor becoming the Timeless Child, creating Vinder's story with the Grand Serpent in a rewritten timeline. The Flux was designed for the Fugitive Doctor, but by the Doctor finding the TARDIS *after* the Fugitive Doctor at "The Ghost Monument," the Doctor sees their own future in the wrong order, believing it to be a hidden past, and is targeted by the Flux. The Doctor becoming the Timeless Child rewrites time/creates a parallel timeline in which an alternate Spy Master is reborn (unaware the Doctor came before the Timeless Child). Also reborn but separated were the Doctor's parents, Bel and Vinder, following a different path to the original universe. Their child is left at a church as the savior against the Division. By not being a Time Lord/fixed event, Ruby Sunday, as the parallel Doctor sharing the same DNA, can take the Doctor's place before they become the Timeless Child with the fob watch of memories the Doctor received from Tecteun during the Flux. This allows the next version of Gallifrey to rise without the Division's intervention. The Doctor, returning to their own timeline with memory loss, regenerates into the last face they meet (Jo Martin). As the Fugitive Doctor fades out of existence in Ruby’s universe, with this theory, the Doctor became immortal (a fixed point in time) when the First Doctor regenerated after seeing their own future as the Doctor of War, meaning the Doctor must always save Gallifrey to create the cracks in time to become the Twelfth Doctor. Moments after regenerating, the TARDIS drops the Doctor to Earth, creating the Doctor's potential future as the Fugitive, made certain by finding the TARDIS at "The Ghost Monument" and ignoring Jack's warning, leading to the Doctor seeing their future as the Timeless Child by the Spy Master.

Reason for reposting this is the the idea that things that were left unexplained in the last era can be contextualised by lore/ themes in future series, more so if the last era was meant to be out of order/ left unresolved. Ruby was told details of earths future by 15 before she was ‘bound by time’ to live in the version of the future. 13 seeing her future as the Timeless child means the doctor is bound by time to become the Timless child… Also the land and sea line makes me think of 13s regeneration when thing’s changed!

Hey. A little weird distinction from me and my friend, about Ruby's snow.... We were talking about the episode and I mentioned the two times that it snowed early on. Old Ruby says that it "never snowed again" and I was assuming she meant after a certain point. But looking back at both scenes, we actually have no real reason to believe that it was in fact her snow. When Susan shows up hiking the snow is real. It's all around, it's natural. And later on when Carla and Ruby are talking over the phone, we only see snow falling outside above the skylight. At least twice now we've seen Ruby manifest snow indoors, and you'd think it would be shown again as a confirmation here. But it's not. In fact I'd go so far as to say that it's a clever misdirect, and really a pretty subtle thing... But you do have to wonder why. Why did she stop spawning snow? Maybe the snow abandoned her too, maybe it's based more in spirit. Or maybe it's actually more dependent on the Doctor. In Space Babies he was the one who had the memory that the snow came through with, Ruby didn't even seem aware of it at first...

Frozen time doesn't make any sense, and there is no support for the future figure of ruby reciting a spell. More likely, all she's saying is 'don't step' (which is the one thing we KNOW she says) - but the words aren't important. What's important is that the people who can physically get close to her are being affected by something. Their facial features suggest it's fear and disgust. I lean towards the idea that the Old Figure somehow lets them see that they are in an abandoned and collapsing timeline, and so they ultimately aren't 'real'.

This isn't a theory but 73 Yards reminded me of Tenant's Midnight episode. It creeped me out. But the "Monster" in both episodes are so wrapped in mystery and unanswered questions that it shifts the focus away from the "Monster" towards the messages in the episodes. In Midnight, it showed the effect of mob mentality to human morality and principles. In 73 Yards, it showed the effects of the abandonment of Ruby by everyone she loved. She becomes cynical and bitter. After her mom abandoned her, her optimism and bubbly attitude is just gone.

I feel like, with regard to why they didn't call in the 14th doctor, that it's perfectly believable to me that whatever banished the doctor after he broke the fairy circle would've also banished 14. They are technically the same person, after all. And if not that, I'll just pretend that he was off doing some kind of adventure with Rose Noble or something. Feels like a weird episode to nitpick like that since it relies on you playing along with the premise.
