i couldn't think of a good thumbnail for this video
Doctor Who is my favourite TV Show and the Doctor is one of my favourite characters. Considering the character has taken many forms and variations (and the fact that I am a fan of the show) I think it is long overdue that I provide my review and ranking for each and every incarnation of the character.
I hope you enjoy the video and don't forget to leave a like and subscribe

I think Jodie Whittaker being discouraged by Chris Chibnall from watching the rest of the show in preparation was a big mistake. I feel like she's left guessing with her performance which no other actor has had to do. Loved your take on 13 here.

Kinda sad that Matt didn't even get 1 minute of discussion 🥺. Yes he didn't grow up a Doctor Who fan like David & Peter but at least he was open about it, did his research, & gave justice to the role. Besides, he said in an interview that he grew up during the time that Doctor Who wasn't even showing so it isn't his fault 😅. Also, I think he was a breath of fresh air after all the heaviness of 10's era. The Doctor needed to be childlike & have fun again & just wanted to forget the pain & loss & Matt Smith portrayed that very well. I mean, can you imagine going immediately to 12/Peter after 10/David? I don't think I could handle all that angst 😅

"That's not the only episode to end like this in the second doctors era" Moments when both of his dalek stories end with an entire colony getting wiped out(the vulcan colony and skaro). It's quite funny how depressing of endings some of his stories have, but I love them more for it

While I disagree with a number of your opinions here, I can certainly understand your justifications. The thing that makes such a tier list difficult is almost all of the mainline doctors cluster in quality on the high end, and even the 'worst doctor' was never so bad that I didn't want to keep watching the show and following the plot. The two major disagreements I have with your rankings as a whole are Jodie Whittaker and Colin Baker. I'd personally put Whittaker herself in the A tier with the other modern Doctors - her spin on the character clicked almost immediately. Even the silly 'fams' and whatnot; it felt like she had taken to heart the lesson learned that she needs people and real connection, but is still, ultimately, an alien who really doesn't 'get' exactly how to do it on purpose while juggling her own baggage at the same time. On the flipside, Colin Baker to me drops down to the B or C tier. It was hard for me to watch a lot of Colin Baker's run, particularly with his early impressions being so abrasive. He definitely put his own spin on the character, too, but this one was just off-putting, and he felt angry and shouty in a way that made me feel uncomfortable watching him. It also didn't help that he was coming off of one of my favorite Doctors, Davison. Davison's doctor felt good natured and even tempered. Kind, as you say, which I loved. If Davison's Doctor raised his voice, it was *important*, or something had really gotten to him. Going from that into Colin Baker's loud and rough portrayal was... jarring. I could see myself getting into the Tardis with pretty much any other main-line Doctor to go off on adventures, but not Colin Baker's. I'd be... honestly a bit afraid of him, though that may be more a statement of my own history with people who are shouty and insulting. It's been quite a while since I saw his episodes, and I don't remember a lot of details, but I remember how his performance made me feel unpleasant. That's the fun of these tier lists, though. Seeing how other peoples' opinions of the same things can shape up and where they come from about them. Happy Who-ing :)

Love your hot take on Heaven Sent/Hell Bent. I'm waiting for my friend to catch up before I continue my rewatch and go through the 12th Doctor's episodes. But, Face the Raven was one of my favourite episodes in the whole Moffat era. And then I got to Heaven Sent, and I'll be honest. I did not even finish the episode. I was so confused and baffled. I watched this amazing episode beforehand where the plot and storyline was perfectly laid out and played out beautifully. It was great. And then the next episode is all existensial and I could barely keep up with it. I'm going to give in another chance, but I don't have high hopes.

I would suggest not trying to go in order. I've always personally advocated for watching non-chronologically so I'd say look through a list of episodes which people usually say are the best (Genesis of the Daleks, Remembrance, City of Death, Pyramids of Mars etc) and just picking one you think you'll like. And then go again from there👍

Thanks for letting me bomb your comment section, man. Great video, agree with 98% of what you got (Eccles has to go Z-tier, he shouldered the entire comeback). @dwfan91-
@dwfan91- 11 ай бұрын
You are the GOAT. Legitimately can't thank you enough man fr🙏 to answer your question- I think it would have to be a mixture of the actor themselves and their enthusiasm and character... and their friendliness and warmth. The Charisma and Humour usually come from both of those. There is no formula to what makes a good Doctor and in my opinion it is the uniqueness of what each actor and writer brings to the table that keeps me in love with each and every one of them

I cannot fathom why the 6th would ever be above the 5th. The show decided that the best way to add drama and tension that to any episode is to have the doctor and his companion just constantly bicker and fight at every moment they possibly can... it was EXHAUSTING. As a ''doctor'' the 6th was... fine. I don't know if I would say he was poorly cast, but he was the a third in a "younger bouncy men each with a small vibe twist" set that Dr Who has fallen into TWICE now, when that sort of characterization works best when it is the oddball choice. 7th doctor so low...? Alot of his episodes are indeed stinkers - but unlike the 6th doctor, the 7th actively SAVES them with his sheer personality and relationship to his companions. Overall, for me, a Doctor's performance relies most of all on the quality of his relationship with his companions. The doctor is a Tramp who sets up his tent somewhere so he can have some fun meddling - and that NEEDS someone to bounce off of. He is a kind sociopath, someone able to watch things die but has more fun helping them live - and he needs something that focuses that energy a little. He is not a messiah - he is a lonely, bored, demi-god trickster. At least, thats how I think he is when he is at his best. There are so many ways to twist that characterization - meaner, crueler, grumpier, kinder, placid, thoughtful, wise, energetic... but they ALL work best with someone uniquely paired to bounce off of. I think the 4th was at his very best with Leela. The "Oh no my companion has run off when I told them to stay still" schtick was best when the companion ran off because she has a KNIFE and wants to STAB someone. The 4th doctors kinder and more playful personality needing to constantly reign in the wolf he kept as a pet was wonderful. 9 had Rose to train, to care for and to have fun with after some darkness - and to help his grumpy heart open up to caring about stuff again. 10 was good with Rose and Martha - but he was absolutely EXCELLENT with Donna. Holy SHIT. Like two addicts going on benders - trying not to think about how unhealthy it all was until one of them crashed and burned. Wow. I hate Clara. With every fiber of my being. The 12ths best moments were when he stood alone, funnily enough. The 7th... Ace was an excellent companion. Fresh, cool, hip and brought back an echo of the granddaughter relationship with the Doctor the 1st had. I think, even when the writing is lacking, as long as the relationship between the doctor and his companions is interesting - then the episode is usually enjoyable. Bickering all the time for the sake of bickering is not interesting. It is infuriating. You can have a companion with a dicey relationship with the doctor without it being empty and overbearing - like Vislor Turlough, who is absolutely underrated. Its interesting to see someone enjoy the 6th so much though - as its just... something I have never been able to stomach. I appreciate how high you put the 1st and 2nd B)

31:43 RE: Heaven Sent/Hell Bent IMO: With the caveat that even knowing The Doctor is wrong (his tunnel-vision obsession with getting Clara back, going all the way back to the end of Face the Raven), and loving the introspective nature of examining the tenacity and will of the character of The Doctor in HEAVEN SENT (Moffat-y 'mind-palaces' aside) the execution and overall tone of HELL BENT feels cheap and rushed trying to bring back Gallifrey, deal with Clara's death, facing Rassilon again, and The Doctor's overall mini-arc as he is forced to let Clara go....all crammed into 45 minutes of thin dialogue and nostalgia bait. That's MY problem with HELL BENT. Well, that and the final gasp of Moffy yanking it off to Clara one last time luls. YMMV.

Honestly ranking Doctors is really hard for me, but I'd say your tierlist could be pretty similar to mine For me personally at least at this moment I'd say Capaldi, McGann and Throughton. Besides that I am a bit clueless who I put next, I adore Colin's acting as the doctor even in the really mediocre Trial of the Timelord, he is still a Highlight. I really enjoy McCoy in his last two Years on the show, even through if I were to include some EU Material, I am a bit unsure since while yes he sure can be a dark incarnation, I am not very huge on the things I heard on the VNAs of his. Hartnell on the other Hand is probably the anti-McCoy (again don't get me wrong, I adore McCoy's Acting, as well as a lot of his stories) but while I saw Hartnell for a long time more as just a meh Doctor, I now can see Things, I REALLY like about his Doctor (not to mention that he has two of my favorite who stories back to back (Massacre; Daleks Masterplan). And of course Tom and Pertwee are truly some GOATs. Especially Pertwee, I feel doesn't get as much of the Credit as he deserves, since his Era and even his Doctor arguably introduced the more action stuff that later other Doctors, especially 10, 11 and 12 have in their Eras. I am yet to really figure out my stands on 11, while I really like Smith and his first Series has a lot to adore, I am not very huge on Series 6 and 7 really. And 10, while yes arguably overrated is still great, even through his Era as a whole can be a mixed bag (every Series has some massive Higlights and some massive lows minus maybe Series 4). And for Jodie: I must admit while I don't like her Era that much, she definitely has some strengths and I really think any of my disliking of some stories is really her fault. Personally I kinda find it sad that they don't dip in more with some darker Ideas with her. And I really just hope she gets to be on Big Finish someday, since I feel like she certainly could need the Colin treatment storywise at least.

Heaven Sent works on it's own if you stop watching after he leaves the Confession Dial (and it basically changes nothing because the 12th Doctor never meets Clara again in the show and he had his memory wiped, and that gets undone too but I'm aware of that, I don't need to watch Hell Bent to learn that like someone watching for the first time would). I choose to view Heaven Sent differently even though I don't even hate Hell Bent, I think what Moffat was going for was executed poorly but I don't hate it. Ultimately I don't think it matters that the Doctors motivation to get out of the Confession Dial was selfish as we later find out in HB, it's still a beautiful standalone episode of Doctor Who about grief that can be watched and judged independently of it's second part if thats what you want to do.

I can agree with this level of nuance. If one wishes to completely ignore Hell Bent, it can make Heaven Sent appear a bit better. With that said, I wouldn't recommend Heaven Sent to someone as their first Doctor Who episode as I don't think it works independently. Additionally, I think it only fair to judge the episode as a complete package because that's what it is- and even if you DO choose to ignore the intended meanings and all that, the episode still is not perfect with some parts feeling like a watered down Sherlock (and me not being as invested in the 12/clara dynamic) Just my opinion of course but one I have cultivated across many rewatches of said episode and series as a whole
@TetchyEquation
@TetchyEquation 11 ай бұрын
I've struggled for years to pick what would be my ideal episode to show DW for the first time to someone, and personally I think Heaven Sent works really well for that if you just say "the Doctor really cared about that girl in the painting who died and also don't worry about the Hybrid lets watch some David Tennant". It's either that or Gridlock for me as introductory episodes@@dwfan91-

I so agree with David Tennant. I think he is a bit of a sugar hit Doctor both for good and bad. He is an amazing actor, a great Doctor but not my favourite either. Maybe too much of a good thing - excess like Tom Baker doing one season too many.

I imagine the Jodie Whittaker era of Doctor Who would be improved if her character acted more confused initially and did not involve herself romantically with her companions. Reason: Whenever the Doctor regenerates, there is usually a period of 1-2 episodes where the character displays extra eccentricity, allowing the audience to adjust to the new version and its unique personality. When Jodie Whittaker took on the historically male role, it would have been more realistic and entertaining to see her struggle with her new gender identity occasionally. Her actions, muscle memory, skills, and even relationship preferences should have initially remained male-centric. It's disappointing to see the Doctor change completely in both body and mind. Many fans dislike the idea of a gender-swapped Doctor, feeling it disrupts the show's continuity and charm. The rapid adaptation and carefree attitude toward the major gender change seemed unrealistic given that the Doctor retains memories of previous incarnations. Improvements: Her character should have expressed some complaints about the challenges of being a woman, mentioned a few benefits, experienced awkward moments (such as using the wrong bathroom), and made minor misogynistic jokes that she quickly realizes are inappropriate now that she is female. Including these gender-related details and showing her struggle to overcome past male habits would make her character more dynamic and likable. By choosing to ignore all that, destroyed all the emotional investment fans had with the old Dr completely without a grace period. A hard break, a car crush no one wants. Same goes for new Dr after Jodie. Simple matter of acknowledgement and proper respect goes long way.

Colin Baker above Peter Davison? Not Colin Baker’s fault, it was the writing, but you need to seek therapy. To be fair, neither had the depth and gravitas of an 800+ yo alien, but again, that’s the writing not exploring that part of the character.

@@jennifermcilvenny4630 oh ofc, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I just find it funny seeing this particular one be copy pasted around everywhere when there is little to no evidence of it in the actual show. In fact its mostly the opposite, by design might I add. Series 9 Episode 1 intentionally starts with a 12th Doctor vastly different to the one that was in Series 8 Episode 12. It's meant to be abrupt, not natural. @@dwfan91- towards the end of series eight, I think his character begins to change. When Clara confronts him at the end of kill the moon and tells him that "you walk our earth,breath our air" you can see that he's taken this on board. He recites the same words back to her. He's spent most of series 8 wondering if he's a good man and what his purpose is. Twelve is the start of a new regeneration cycle. He really shouldn't exist. The only reason he does is because of clara. He feels he owes her for his life basically. When she betrays him with the tardis keys he still wants to help her. He shows genuine compassion for a human for the first time. In the series 8 finale when Missy offers him an army , saying were not that different, he realises he is different and the thing that matters to him most are the people that he loves. In last Christmas Clara and the doctor admit they lied to each other and are given a second chance. That is the start of a co-dependant relationship that leaves the doctor unable to let go of Clara. She's been his compassion and morality helping him to find them within himself. This culminates in heaven sent and hell bent. The doctor is the villain. He's reckless and selfish and goes too far. In a way it's character regression. He has to accept that he's brought Clara back when he shouldn't have. He accepts that things have to end. This carries over when he meets River and accepts that things have to end and it can't be changed. He spends 24 years with river. Whatever they did in that time will surely have changed him for the better. Without the events of Death in heaven, Hell bent and Husbands we wouldn't have the doctor we have in series 10. Sorry, I tried to explain my interpretation as best I can. I didn't mean to write an essay lol.
