Unfortunately, there are more stupid people than sensible people commenting on social media. Remember, Tony Snell, a free agent NBA player who needed, still probably needs a few games to get NBA retirement benefits because his children have autism, and people were like, why do you need it when you've earned 50 million in your career? A lot of people don't consider the multiple taxes, fees, boatload of expenses, that come when you make that type of money and think like the players are getting close to the full amount.

What I "hear", when I listen to grown men complain about paying taxes & fees on multi-million dollar contracts, is that THEY simply didn't have the maturity to be responsible and manage their financial situations. These 2 former athletes blamed everybody except themselves for their financial shortcomings (i.e. No Accountability). Instead of buying another luxury car, why not enroll yourself into a finance or accounting class? Why not humble yourself, and learn, rather than just rely on other people to babysit both you & your money?

You can deduct the agent’s fee and taxes paid to municipalities and states to reduce the federal taxable income. Also, back then, you could have deducted EBE for anything sport activity, plus deduct a portion of home for a gym.

Is there a way for NBA players to get paid in stocks? 50% tax is crazy. The highest federal tax bracket is 37%. then depending on which state they reside and the jock tax like he mentioned, it adds up. They can’t take their salary in stocks and bonds and things like that, but they can have a financial advisor manage their money for them.

They are correct about the taxes but also a tax accountant can get back about 2% which still put the effective tax rate at about 48%. Today's professional athletes have it a little better due to Trump's tax cut that will end on Dec 31, 2025. I don't know why all of the professional sports unions will not band together and lobby to reduce their players' tax rate.
