I don't care for country music. Never bought a C&W album. Then I had no choice but to escort my wife to a Brooks & Dunn concert & Dwight opened up for them. I was as impressed as when I saw Tina Turner. He knows how to entertain!

Dwight continues to be a classic in his own time. A genius. He takes a 45 year old staple recorded by dang near everybody and makes it his own thing. Listening to him is like listening to it for the first time.

Bernie Bennett everything you say is true BUT you neglected the singer songwriter who WROTE THIS TUNE, the EXCELLENT Danny O’Keefe who did the BEST VERSION by far. Now, I feel better.

Dwight gives this beautifully crafted song the Bakersfield treatment and it's a perfect fit - one of the best versions out there...

If anybody can pull off a good cover of this song, it's Dwight. The man rarely disapoints and this is no exception. In his own Bakersfield hillbilly moanin' way, he still manages to evoke the feel of the original, even with his ever so slight inflection changes. Its the mark of a true artist who take a pure melancholy song like this original by Danny O'Keefe, and make it his own. Dwight Yoakam is vastly under-rated in this regard.

I think this is one of those rare songs nobody could trash. Been done by the greats Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Leon Russel, and the one I grew up on Charlie Rich and I have yet to hear a bad version.

dwight is one of the few who never changed, never compromised who he was,to me, that makes him an ARTIST,Trashville,[and what it should be called nowadays,]is full of singers, but very, very few ARTIST,DWIGHT tried trashville but they didnt get it, so he went to LA and became a friggin LEGEND,I dont understand why, but that seems backwards to me,anyways that was in the 80s,but nothings changed, there aint much country music in the country music capital anymore, just my two cents worth.

I concur Dolph Savage. Thanks, Dwight for being the go to thing in my life. I do so prefer the older stuff, talking about kin, sin, hope, and the appropriately intense dose of revenge. I'm still giving 3 pears a chance, but I've never had to work so hard to like your work.
