was just commenting last night, take a look at some of the true legends of country. Merle, George Strait, Buck, Dwight, Bob Wills, Willie, Waylon. The thing they all have in common? Nashville had nothing to do with it. I truly think that except for the Opry, Nashville is a highly overrated part of country music history

@ matizzle32 There is no comparison between Elvis and this song. Elvis destroyed this song along with many other songs he recorded because all Elvis had to do was Fart and it became a hit. Sad. Dwight covers this song with feeling, as did Danny. Elvis simply sang the words like he was at Karaoke. Elvis had his place in music history, but he was far from the musical God that Elvis fans created. Great job Dwight!

If anybody can pull off a good cover of this song, it's Dwight. The man rarely disapoints and this is no exception. In his own Bakersfield hillbilly moanin' way, he still manages to evoke the feel of the original, even with his ever so slight inflection changes. Its the mark of a true artist who take a pure melancholy song like this original by Danny O'Keefe, and make it his own. Dwight Yoakam is vastly under-rated in this regard.

dwight is one of the few who never changed, never compromised who he was,to me, that makes him an ARTIST,Trashville,[and what it should be called nowadays,]is full of singers, but very, very few ARTIST,DWIGHT tried trashville but they didnt get it, so he went to LA and became a friggin LEGEND,I dont understand why, but that seems backwards to me,anyways that was in the 80s,but nothings changed, there aint much country music in the country music capital anymore, just my two cents worth.

@MrRazorblade999 I listened to Charlie Rich's version, it seems pretty sincere, perhaps because he took it personally, which naturally adds to the nuance of the song, but I still think that even the original by Danny O'Keffe is a little better than Charlie Rich's; but Mr. Rich still does a great job in his own style. I don't dislike it, but I prefer the others, and Dwight's is more faithful to the original.

Dwight was the last real country. After him, its been people who couldn't make it in rock or rap. If it ain't country, don't call it country. Call it something else. In the 70's, there was progressive country, etc
