Is he a member of the Grand Ole Oprey? Several REALLY famous country artists aren't in it. One or two will leave you scratching your head as to why the haven't been invited. My personal wtf....why isn't he in? Is George Strait. I THINK that they are contracted to perform a certain number of times every year at the Oprey and George was always too busy to commit. He tours AND runs a longhorn ranch.

He is singing about coming upon a man from the south who was dying and nobody cared on that LA street that he was dying. So he sang Dixie to him while he was dying. The dying man was telling him to get out of LA before it killed him to. He actually left the next week.

Also, Dwight has never touched drugs, never smoke or drank. Doesn't believe in cussing, even though they made him do it in Sling Blade.

The Northern soldiers in the civil war had "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" as their theme song and the Southern soldiers had "Dixie" as their song. Both should be honored as the music that represented the over 500,000 men on both sides who died.

Southerners are often tied to their land and region in a special way. Regardless of where they go or where they end up living later in life, in their blood and bone they remain Southern and tied to their native land. This is certainly so for country (rural) people and is true whether those people are white or black. When in later life we find ourselves in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. we seek one another out, and again color does NOT matter, for moments of "home." It's in the land, the sound, the smell, the food, the very essence of life that Southern is found. New Englanders to a large degree (the country people) have this same tie to the land, weather, and customs of their native place. It is perhaps impossible to explain but that is what the song is about. The best I can do is say that the difference lies in land that your family has farmed, lived, an died on for 100+ years is different from a house you bought last year and plan to live in until enough equity has accrued to allow you to move again. One is your family and the other is simply a structure.

I'm proud to live in Dixie. I was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi where the Civil War ended. My grandfather helped build the military park. Great memories for me and the park and history all over Vicksburg. I do love Dwight Yoakam and all his songs. He had been friends with Buck for a long time. My cousin worked for Dwight in his early years. She even got to eat with Buck on Dwight's tour bus. How cool is that. That is a sad song and Dwight can make you feel it. I love Dixie.

I sang this at my dad's funeral. I changed lines to personalize it for my dad. I did sing Dixie to my dad before he died. He may or may not have heard me. He was born in Arkansas but lived most his life in Illinois working for for the Air Force. His parents and all his brothers are buried im Dixie. I figured when he died they had a chance to get back together. They were all wonderful people and I was proud to call them family. After living in Illinois for half my life my job moved to Texas to work for the Air Force so now I'm in Dixie. My final resting place is in Illinois beside my dad but some ashes will go on vacation to Hawaii.

Dixie is an olde song -- "I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten; look away, lookaway, lookaway, Dixieland..." Our Messick Hi School Band in Mphs always played it (along with Peter Gun) in the Cotton Carnival & Christmas Parades & at school events, until 67 or 68 when we were told we couldn't play it anymore. Don't know what it meant to some people -- but to us it was a rah rah be proud of our homeland song. But like many things, it obviously hurt some people -- like seeing a rebel license plate or a mixed couple. Nobody that I knew meant any harm -- we were just kids -- but we're having a tough time getting past the past. Anyway, I'm still proud of my homeland; don't know how to fix things; but try to show equal respect and kindness to everyone, wherever. --don PS: "Dixie" is not what Dwight is playing here. Only its ghost."

To me, the context of "dixie" is fluid in this case. It is anywhere a person feels is home. It doesn't have to be where you grew up, just somewhere that feels home with everything in you. I was born in FL, raised in Va & WV and moved to TN in my 30s and back to WV in my 50s. My dixie is TN.

To me, a lot of times a person who has lived their life in a certain region or state, they think of it as their home and many memories. He was an old man and his life and memories were made in the south (maybe Dixie) and probably most of his life. Dixie brings back good memories and he wants to remember them as he dies. Dwight Yoakam was an awesome singer. He had a beautiful voice and he could bring out feelings with his voice and his songs.

The song he is referring to as Dixie. Is known as Dixieland. It was for a long time used as the national anthem of the Confederate States of America. And the tune was played at the beginning of many battles and skirmishes during the civil war to boost morale of the Confederate soldier

The story he tells is what gets me. Being from a small town I think you imagine any city and the people being crime-ridden, crass, indifferent to someone lying on the ground dying and the people that don't understand how it's not being acknowledge; that wouldn't happen in a small town. Maybe you know a lot of the folks that live there or they just like to gossip. The part you said you liked yeah that's yodeling which I absolutely love and admire those that are capable A portion of the lyrics are 'the bottle had robbed him of all his rebel pride' and I think it means he drank and drank a lot to cope with how different L.A. was compared to 'home in Dixie'. That's what I imagine small town folk vs the fast pace of a big city. Maybe I'm way off and that's okay if I am but I love the story and DY has an amazing voice. Thanks Ty for the reaction I like to hear what others think. Blessed be.

Dixie was the national anthem of the Confederacy which has caused it to be somewhat controversial. The most famous version is when Elvis sang it as a part of his medley An American Trilogy. I highly recommend that version. There is also a rockin’ version of Dixie preformed by 70’s Southern Rock band Black Oak Arkansas that’s pretty good as well. It’s also the sound The Duke’s Of Hazzard car’s horn makes.

Yes, there is a song called Dixie or DixieLand. I think it chronicles the poverty after the Civil War. Of course, since the south is south of the proverbial Mason/Dixon line, the south is often called Dixie. Is a very upbeat tempo, but not exactly sure of its meaning. In the case of this song, it sounds like the southern man that lay dying let the bottle rob him of his life, and I assume he was an alcoholic. He was dreaming that he was back at home rather than the streets of Hollywood.

I've heard this song before. I liked it then and I like it now. I'm not necessarily a Dixie person, but this one is tender and sweet. I'm a Midwest girl living in the South. The actual song Dixie was a song associated with the Confederacy. It can be taken many ways these days and may not be politically correct in some circles and a memorial song in other circles. There actually are a lot of emotions attached to it.

Wikipedia shows it was written in 1859 by Daniel Decatur Emmett, so right before the Civil War. He was from Ohio and became a notable songwriter (inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970). Interesting he was from Ohio and wrote a song specifically about Dixie land. Although Ohio was divided politically it stayed in the Union and fought with Lincoln. U.S. Grant was from Ohio which I didn't realize. One could dig deeply into the various facets of this song's lyrics and its cultural impact.

That is southern drawl. Some folks once told me they loved my southern drawl, and I told them I thought their northern accent was pretty cute too. We all laughed. But what Dwight Yokam was saying here sounded like he was in a big city, and someone he was with fell out on the street, and died, but big city folks were so used to that happening that they didn't stop to help. And he wished that he had been back down south, where people had not lost their sense of compassion yet.

Dwight has also done some acting. In Slingblade he was the mean boyfriend of the women Karl stayed with. The one he killed at the end. He's done several other movies. Luv me some Dwight Yoakam .. esp the way he wears his hat down low over his eyes & peeks out from under it .. oh Lordt 🤗 What I got from the song was Dwight held someone as they were dying in Cali. But B4 he died..he told Dwight to go back home to the South..in Dixie..bc Cali was the reason he was dying & Dixie was a better place to be. The man wished he was in Dixie so that's why Dwight sang the Dixie song to him..kinda fulfilling the man's dying wish.. Dwight was Dixie to him...in a sense. Wow what a song .. sad Cali's like that.

Google says: Dixieland, in music, a style of jazz, often ascribed to jazz pioneers in New Orleans, La., but also descriptive of styles honed by slightly later Chicago-area musicians. The term also refers to the traditional jazz that underwent a popular revival during the 1940s and that continued to be played into the 21st century.

I couldn't find where you had reacted to Disturbed's "The Light" or "Hold on to Memories." If you have sorry I missed it. I really think you will enjoy the messages they bring through that are very relevant.

its simple man... we leave home in search of something. we don't really know what. we think that change will ease some longing. we find there aint nothin' out there either. we find ways to kill the pain. (the bottle had robbed him, of what he had). but we always view the past, the times we had with greater reverence. and we die lonely.... the artist sees this. attempts to capture that pain. attempts to provide relief through their work. 'til our last dying breath.

“FELLOW CITIZENS: I am very greatly rejoiced to find that an occasion has occurred so pleasurable that the people cannot restrain themselves. [Cheers.] I suppose that arrangements are being made for some sort of a formal demonstration, this, or perhaps, to-morrow night. [Cries of `We can’t wait,’ `We want it now,’ &c.] If there should be such a demonstration, I, of course, will be called upon to respond, and I shall have nothing to say if you dribble it all out of me before. [Laughter and applause.] I see you have a band of music with you. [Voices, `We have two or three.’] I propose closing up this interview by the band performing a particular tune which I will name. Before this is done, however, I wish to mention one or two little circumstances connected with it. I have always thought `Dixie’ one of the best tunes I have ever heard. Our adversaries over the way attempted to appropriate it, but I insisted yesterday that we fairly captured it. [Applause.] I presented the question to the Attorney General, and he gave it as his legal opinion that it is our lawful prize. [Laughter and applause.] I now request the band to favor me with its performance.'” Abraham Lincoln Dixie is the south! Dixie was written in the 1850s by Daniel Decatur Emmett and was very popular in minstrel songs all over the country. Sing the Song referred to the South it became the unofficial song of the Confederacy during the Civil War and was still very popular after in that region. It's basically a song written from the point of view of someone born in the South who misses it and wants to go back. This song is about a guy from the South who ended up homeless and and alcoholic and died in the streets of LA. Dwight Yoakum wrote the song from the point of view of a fellow Southerner who came upon him in his last minutes and tried to comfort him as he lay dying.

I researched this song and this song was popular before the Civil War. Abe Lincoln called it one of the prettiest songs he had ever heard. Some people think Dixie means people that were for slavery but to me it has always just been about the land and its people
