Dwight Yoakum is absolutely the King of Country , Country Western and Bluegrass combined. He stayed away from POP Country and stayed true. Love his music and always will. Thank you for analyzing him.

Here is what I love about your channel - you embrace all music. Clearly you have your own preferences, but you have everything from rock, to country, to bluegrass. Like a lot of us, we enjoy and can recognize the talent and hard work it has taken for a lot of these artists to get where they are and it is hard to not watch these without smiling and enjoying them. It is just as enjoyable, for me anyway, to watch your reaction and see the enjoyment on your face while you're watching these vids. It is the sign of a true, confident musician who can watch another musician and recognize and respect their talent instead of being threatened by it or post an "OH yeah, let me show you how to do it better." vids over and over. When Nashville lost the outlaw country artists to Austin, TX Buck Owens and Porter Wagner wound up in Bakersfield, California. I still remember the Porter Wagner Show on Sundays at 6pm rebroadcast on channel 47 out of Fresno. Dolly Parton was a back up singer for Porter. The next generation from this was Merle Haggard and Dwight and these guys were Ioved for their outlaw stance as well. Mr. Yoakum still performs today. I saw him at Hardly Stickley Bluegrass a few years back.

It’s not really accurate to say Dwight and Haggard were of the same generation. Haggard was 18 years older and began recoding about 20 years earlier than Dwight. Also, Dolly replaced Norma Jean on Porter Wagoner’s show as featured vocalist and duet partner. She did much more than sing back-up.

I was strictly a rock & roller, but as I heard more classic Country music, I fell in love with the sound. And I do mean classic. Anyone who came later than Dwight or Marty Stuart I have no time for. Listen to musicians like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Emmy Lou Harris, and of course, Johnny Cash, and you might form a different opinion of Country. But stay away from today's Country. It's a hybrid Country/Pop music with a little twang and a lot of glitz with maybe some standout artists, but I none that I can name.

Was fortunate to see Dwight Yoakam live back in the day around this same time. He played the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver Canada and he was fabulous. We had to laugh as, overwhelmingly & noticeably, the audience were women lol. And he could glide across the stage magically like he had roller balls on the soles of his boots. Thank you Fil!

I discovered Flaco Jimenez's amazing abilities on the accordion being a huge fan of Freddy Fender, the Tex-Mex supergroup Texas Tornados was born. What an amazing experience for both the ears and the eyes!! I'm happy that you did an analysis of one of Dwight Yoakum's songs and of course the band members that he helped put together became legendary. The Streets of Bakersfield is one of my all time favorite songs and as you could see he and Buck Owens we're very creative together, forming a tight bond right up to the time of his passing.

To be honest Dwight is one of the few country artists that are interesting to me. He is traditional with a twist and his music is so honest. “I sang Dixie while he died” is one of my favorites. Once long ago he dated Sharon Stone and she famously called him plain as dirt (or something along those lines). I have to agree as dirt is the substance of life. Dwight Yoakam is a super talented real country singer, no Nashville-pop for him, he moved to the west coast where the Bakersville sound was getting popular, Vince Gill moved out there for awhile singing with the Pure Prairie league , they had just released the super hit " Amy". Tony Brown was out there playing with a band after He left Elvis. He talked Vince into coming back to Nashville after he got a job with a big country label.

Compare his lyrics to most of the chart pap these days and he's in a different class. Just an impression perhaps, but if memory serves, Yokum was hitting it big in the industry about the same time mainstream Country was heading in the direction of “twang-Rock”. His own sound was (is) much more traditional. Just my opinion, but I’ll take the traditional sound any day of the week! Have you checked out The Mavericks at all? (They have a real fun version of “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down.)

Kentucky has produced some great artists, he's definitely one of them. One thing that I think that also needs to be considered is how much Pete Anderson adds to the overall sound. Give a listen to the Dwight Live album to hear this. It just wouldn't sound the same without his guitar work. He really stands out on Long Black Cadillac, Fast as You, and Rocky Road Blues. Excellent analysis! Appreciate all the different styles of music you look at.

This was an interesting video. I like Dwight's voice. The violin was a bit of a surprise, I was expecting more country but it was almost classical. The accordion really surprised me, but it was a nice surprise and it fit in so well. I also liked the bass solo and the bass and accordion duet at the end. They didn't over-power each other. This was very enjoyable to listen too.

@@kenholley9431 A part of Buck coming back to prominence was the Beatles cover of Act Naturally sung by Ringo and it brought Buck to the attention of many young people who would never had know his name if the Beatles had not asked and received permission to cover that tune which was right before A Hard Day's Night hit the theaters. You can't sell that aspect short. It helped Buck a lot.

I am a Dwight Yoakam fan from the beginning. I have every one of his albums and I don't think there's a bad track on any of them. He's from Pikeville, KY and grew up in Columbus, OH but never lost his Kentucky roots. I saw a pair of his jeans at the Country Music Hall of Fame (and they looked tight on the display). I think he's the greatest. And like some commentators suggested, please check out The Mavericks - Raul Malo is a fantastic singer.

Another great review. I could Literally Sit and watch DWIGHT YOAKUM play and sing and Make his Moves, while he is not singing. I also like the way he includes the accordion, violin and the other instruments. All together, I love him. He is much greater than given the credit

As a retired promoter here in Oz, I had the pleasure of bringing many Usa Artists here. They were always pleasantly surprised when they discovered I was a huge Dwight fan.
