Yoakam is nothing special as a singer. Good, but nothing special. What makes him stand out as one of the best half-dozen artists of his generation is that he had first dibs on the writing of one of the best couple of writers of his generation. Namely himself. BTW, Steve Earle is even less of a singer. But he got first dibs on the writing of Steve Earle. The two best writers of their generation

While I agree, the stations in my part of the world played the mess outta "I'm a thousand miles from no where". Story time kiddos! Long time ago, when you went on a road trip and listened to the radio, you had to change stations every couple hundred miles because of course you did. Every single time we changed stations on this one trip down to South Texas, " I'm a thousand miles from Nowhere" started to play the very second we changed over. From the back seat I leaned forward and said: Dad, I think the radio us trying to tell us something.😂 I might have been 8?😂

I used to be kind of a semi-pro country saying for about 13 years. Couple of bands and guest performances, solo performances this country accompaniment. I could hit a lick on some of Dwight songs. The audience always loved his songs. Had a heart touching moment at an auditorium at a community college in Hendersonville North Carolina. I performed "I Sang Dixie", really knocked it out (not braggin) and at least a couple dozen patrons in the audience stood up and put their hands over their hearts til the end. It was something I didn't even realize, I asked the band manager what that was all about. He said " Man, that's the Southern National Anthem" I actually felt honored. JACK DIAMOND COUNTRY SINGER

It’s not “country”. Dwight is an American musician. Sure this beautiful song draws on bluegrass, the music of his Kentucky mountain home. But Dwight is so much more. He was an MTV star before he went too Nashville. He stayed in LA so he could eventually record “Long White Cadillac” which is rock ‘n roll if I ever heard it. Fantastic lyrics, a voice you recognize immediately whether he’s doing this, an Elvis cover, or rock that is so much better than today’s “country music”.
