In 1990 before the Premier League was created, England had the poorest league in Western Europe because the TV money was shared evenly between the 92 professional teams in the four divisions. When the Premier League was created it was the first time the top division clubs in England where getting more TV money than the lower divisions. Then Premier League clubs realised due their history they were more popular than other European clubs around the world so started to sign collective TV contracts with different countries from around the world making them richer than the other leagues and more attractive to wealthy owners because they were very profitable. Now the Premier League is the most watched sports league in the world with more global viewers than the Champions League, NBA and NFL and this has led to the Premier League being the most sort after Sports League for TV networks across the globe, it now has the biggest TV contract in football. But there is even more room for growth, because the American media market is the biggest in the world, which is why the NFL has the biggest TV contract in world sport just being popular in the USA. The Premier League is exploding in popularity in the USA with games being shown on free to air TV in the USA every week on one of the main channels and popular Americans shows like Ted Lasso and Welcome to Wrexham promoting English football to American audiences and if a bidding war happens with American networks for the Premier League TV rights they could see the total revenue of Premier League triple just with the American TV money.

In the early days, PL.was shown free to air in some Southeast Asian nations Slowly but it became a paid subscription sporta channel once a decade had passed as their popularity ensured a viable subscription model. The US model is just following an earlier marketing tactic.

Coming from an American that has been into soccer since I was young, we watch the premier league because it is on and the parody in the league. We are accustomed to relatively equal sports, so we have no interest in leagues like the Bundesliga. That is why Bundesliga and Serie A are no longer on a main channel (no free channels anymore) while the premier league grows in popularity and familiarity.
@Delboy02 жыл бұрын
@@myownlilbubble English games used be shown abroad as early as the 1950s and what English teams have that maybe other European teams don’t have is several generations of hardcore foreign fans that are willing to pay a subscription to watch English teams. La Liga in the UK used to be on the same network as the Premier League for no extra cost. La Liga wanted more money and decided to move away from this network to another platform where you subscribe and La Liga has completely collapsed in the UK because people were only prepared to watch La Liga when it was available for no extra cost, but were not willing to pay a subscription for it because they were not hardcore fans of Spanish football. Think about this in the USA the Bundesliga was the first European league to be shown in America in the 1980s and in South America Italian and Spanish football was king there and the Premier League only started being shown in South America in the mid 1990s. Now in both South America and North America the Premier League has taken over as the most watched European league.

Your comments are always spot
@charlesray96742 жыл бұрын
The comments are true, but you all are forgetting one basic element: the United States Soccer Federation. Soccer made in Germany was the first program that carried European football with weekly Bundesliga matches. The Italian RAI used to broadcast Serie A (and Serie B when there were international breaks) matches. There were also occasionally FA cup matches. Telemundo and Univision would show matches from the Mexican league, Argentina and sometimes matches from the South American club tournaments. I was very fortunate to see an El Clásico between Madrid and Barcelona (Roberto Carlos was red-carded for a shoulder charge!! 🤬) All these matches were shown on over the air television on UHF channels 25, 31, 41 and 47 in particular. They were, except Spanish language games, broadcast by Public Broadcast System (PBS) which double as community/cultural channels. Those PBS channels had to pay fees to the USSF. The Bundesliga and the FA Cup were the first to disappear off the American airwaves. Italian matches would vanished during that league wide betting scandal. The other major factors were Sky and pay-per-view. In fact, families started buying satellite TV to watch sporting events across the country and around the world. Local bars and restaurants also gotten in the craze. ESPN started building sports bars/restaurants and fans would be able to see their favorite sport for the price of a good over-priced meal. And everyone had to "wet USSF's beak". During that time, if a player was worth his salt, he play in the Italian Serie A. Also the Spanish league was often called "La Liga de Estrellas". The English game was still playing "route one" 🙄 Since the United States didn't start that crap league, those folks who grew up watching German and Italian football, would get cable TV and pay for subscriptions for Dutch, Portuguese, Scottish and French games. The one thing that English league does better than everyone else, is marketing their teams. Chelsea, manu, Man City, etc, you can find their brand everywhere.

The Premier league TV money is distributed evenly between the clubs, so clubs have more spending power than their European counterparts, this makes for a more exciting league as big boys can and do get beaten by the so called smaller clubs. Most other countries distribute most of the money to the top teams so they move further ahead and the leagues become predictable. Most PL stadiums are new or have been rebuilt over the course of the PL era so the live experience is better. Worldwide viewing has also increased with the American Market having showing most of the games live on peacock which is a cheap streaming service. Most PL clubs now have American supporters groups, and commentary in the same language also helps.

Mexican league is trying so hard to copy the English premier league economic system that they never question if they should. Traditional football and local club heroes are now being replaced by a bunch of mercenaries that don’t really care about the club or winning because they are getting pay regardless, Mexican young players are barely given a chance to debut, and Mexican footballers rarely play on the elite clubs because they’re being overpriced for a mediocre performance and no clubs are willing to risk a fiasco. It’s disgusting how greed and corruption can do so much damage to a beautiful sport, but the saddest part is that the average Mexican league watcher don’t know and don’t care.

They have taken over Financially. But I think it's a temporary state. Football works in cycles. Serie A was the best league between the mid 80s to mid 00s period...but then Calciopoli happened and the league declined. I also have to point out that EPL is the only league that has had an influx of "OIL" money. PSG basically operate outside the French League system financially. The influx of money at Chelsea broke the monopoly of Man Utd and Arsenal and artificially made the league more open and competitive and then Abu Dhabi's take over at Man City followed the Chelsea blue print and that added a 4th team into the mix...this allowed the EPL to market itself as the most competitive league around and bring in more casual audiences even if the competition was manufactured by sportswashers. Newcastle will now feed into this narrative. La Liga and Bundesliga, it's impossible to just have a big money country to come in and liven up the competition and inject private money into the league. Serie A has traditionally had families owning teams so it can't happen there either EPL sold its soul to be the best and they've achieved it at the cost of the spirit of the game.

I don’t think it is cycles. If you look at Italy’s success it was because Italy was the first country to have billionaires own teams so their owners could outspend all of Europe for the best players and dominate Europe. The Spanish dominations was down to La Liga allowing Real Madrid and Barcelona to take almost 68% of the total TV money for 20 years with false wealth to dominate Europe. Both models were never sustainable long term because the money being spent was not organically being made. When the Italian economy collapsed these billionaires didn’t have enough money to waste on football and Real Madrid and Barcelona overspending was making La Liga less competitive leading to the TV money shrinking. This is different to Premier League we’re they were simply monetising their global popularity. Even when English football was poor in the 1980s and 1970s it was still the most watched football in the world, because fans in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, North America and Australia recognise England as the home of football and the England as having their most prestigious league as it was the original. This means the Premier League gets far more viewers worldwide than any other league in Europe by a massive margin and viewers worldwide equals bigger TV contracts worldwide and this is only going to get bigger during the streaming wars where companies look for content that guarantees viewers and of all the leagues in the world the Premier League does that. If you at the Bundesliga Fox USA spent over 450 million on the Bundesliga USA rights for 6 years. It didn’t deliver viewers in the USA so when the rights were up it only went for 150 million for 6 years because it lost value due to the lack of viewers, while the Premier League US contract went up from 500 million to 3.5 billion in the USA over that same period because it was delivering viewers in the USA

I wouldn’t agree that Real Madrid and Barcelona are the most followed clubs in India or Asia. There was a study done that look at the global viewership of the big European clubs per game. Liverpool and Man Utd were the highest at close 400 million global viewers worldwide per game. Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham were next with viewers over 250 million per game. Real and Barcelona when they were not playing each other only averaged 50 million well below the English teams. That is why English teams earn so much more from their international TV contracts in India and around the world. They are not giving English teams more money out of charity or historical connections, they simply look at the viewing stats and see English teams get far bigger tv ratings than other European teams in their country so pay them more for their TV rights.

The only thing that England are deserved to become the best football country of the world is the national team's performance. After the astonishing performance in World Cup 2018 and Euro 2020, The Three Lions go to Qatar with disappointing Nations League result. Winless in all six games coupled with poor player performance like Maguire might affect the upcoming World Cup result and the Gareth Southgate's job itself. Asking about Hoeness' statement, it is hard to predict that England football might dominate once more. In the last season of European competitions, the UCL had almost produced an All-English Final (Liverpool and Manchester City) before Real Madrid lifted the 14th trophy instead. UEL and UECL had West Ham and Leicester both eliminated in the semifinal by Frankfurt and Roma (who won their respective tournament). I guess the next time England football might dominate again will be the 2023/24 season, when the UCL Final itself will take place in Wembley Stadium. That season might be a good time to see Arsenal (if won the PL) and Manchester United (if finished top four) playing better in the UCL, having a good performance as when both clubs are in the golden period (United with Fergie, Arsenal with Wenger).

i agree but not really affecting us we are producing youngsters at 10% of what we could do and have such good academies now with musiala, tomori, mount, james, chalobah, declan rice all coming from chelsea academy in the space of 3-4 years which is fucking nuts all those players are 23-19 look at spain and xavi he is trying his best to boost spain and favors his country over club and several other spanish la liga managers do that they are producing at about 80% of what they can do yet english youngsters are arguably better if we were to fully focus on english wouldnt be suprised if in 20 years we wouldve won at least a world cup and a euro

@@bigt6665 Ahahahaha is this why England saw a flood of young French and Spanish footballers? The Clairefontaine of France alone beat up La Masia, leave alone England.

Haaland has proven that the EPL is the real Farmers League. One could argue that pep guardiola system is helping them score. But consider that he's never scored like this in any other league he's ever played for. My conclusion is the EPL is the real Farmers League. It's just a highly marketed League.

Well, in his first full season in the Bundesliga Haaland scored 12 goals in the first 10 games, which isn't too different from the 15 now. Of course, in a better team he gets even better chances.

That's why, in my opinion of course, The English national team is a joke... if you keep growing through money and not through young talents, what do you aspect ?

If the English nation team is a joke where it reached the Semifinal of tHe last World Cup and the final of the Euros and currently u19 European Champions and female European champions, then what is Germany with almost double the population, eliminated early from tournaments, twice by England, only 2 champions league trophies in 20 years and they have to beg English kids switch to Germany because real German kids are mediocre

@@Delboy0 we do this with little effort we could win the world cup in 20 years if we capped the number of foreign players a team could have our academies are already the best in the world and look at spain they do everything they can to bosst the national team and their youngsters while having a worse team and worse youngsters

@@bigt6665 absolute tosh. There are more English players in the big 6 than Spanish players in Real Madrid. Don’t let facts get in the way of a false opinion. Foreigners are the reason young English players are so good because they train and player against the best players in the world and this raises their level. England don’t win World Cups because the FA are not a football priority organisation and English coaches are terrible.

I support a European Super League. I would love Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers to join European Super League. There should be relegation and promotion with a tier one of 20 teams and two east and west divisions of twenty.

Maaaaaaate, a presentation by the faction trying to start the super to combat the dominance of the EPL read.. "Two of the past four finals have been all-English contests and only Real Madrid prevented a third all-English final in June. Over the past five years, roughly 75 per cent of Champions League semi-finalists were from England, plus the few continental exceptions Paris [Saint-Germain], [Real] Madrid and [Bayern] Munich." "Newly promoted Nottingham Forest’s net spend of €160m was more than the whole of Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 (a total of 78 clubs) combined. The Premier League affords wage costs almost twice as high as its next continental rival.
