The Super League Civil War is BACK: The ruling, the format & reactions

The European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA and FIFA must step out of the way of any breakaway leagues that wish to be created and operate. Not that any and all leagues can be set up without permission, just that UEFA and FIFA don’t have the power to block them and monopolize the market. With that in mind, what does this mean for European football? Will anything change? And what is the new format for the European Super League? There have been some changes for the better, while they haven’t exactly got rid of the safeguards that are in place for the “big teams” completely.

I have a similar stance on this as you. I mean either way it’s just rich people getting richer so if this creates competition for UEFA then i can only assume it will lead to innovation. The shit UEFA pulled in regards to the last world cup was so obviously corrupt. I mean giving out the hosting rights to a country that didn’t even have the infrastructure to host it is insane. That's the 1 thing that the North American sports leagues have that could benefit the European football structure. Long term it would give other clubs a real chance of long term success and competing with the richer clubs. Rather than developing a golden generation and everyone getting bought in 2-3 seasons. Historically there was more competition as the financial gap was lower the further in the past you go. But there is a huge sense of entitlement among the big rich clubs. They are like empires that refuse to fall. Some like Barca, Real, Juve just want to consolidate everything and get more rich and more control.

I think the sad part about this whole power struggle is that neither side actually has the interests of the fans and players at heart. Its just one mafia v another mafia. UEFA and FIFA dont have the good of football at heart as weve seen over the years, but sadly neither do the super league execs because they just wanna topple UEFA and become the defacto UEFA and rather than fixing the structural issues across football they'd just be addressing their own issues. And i say this as a Madridista. Coz what Florentino is proposing will definitely address some of the issues we have from existing UEFA competitions but none of the actual issues that matter. Battle between two evils. Meanwhile the fans and players we just remain pawns. Keep up the great coverage as always Adrian and happy holidays everyone 👊🏿🎉

I don't think this is a mafia vs mafia situation. It's mostly UEFA vs clubs. I know that Barça and Juve are not the cleanest clubs out there, but still not the same as UEFA. And Real Madrid and Barcelona are fan owned clubs, so it's mostly a monopolist and corrupted UEFA vs fans.

Here's the thing. One reason why clubs are afraid of how they're losing younger viewers is because younger viewers have less disposable income than the older generations do. It's hard enough to keep ourselves afloat with all the bills and what not. The Super League isn't going to fix this problem, football will have to reset for a world with less money because once the richer older generation goes away, the money will also go away.

It is exactly how you said it. The big teams would be protected in their Star League, as only 2 of the top 16 could drop/year, and even if they do they will compete in the Gold League, they won't go out altogether. The whole "promotion and relegation" thing is an illusion, just to address people's concerns about the initial concept of the Super League. They don't care about innovation, creating something unique, or helping all the clubs. They want to protect themselves and maintain the status quo. But don't worry, unless they convince a lot of clubs to join, it is destined to fail.

The Swiss part of the new UCL format has already been scrapped. It would have meant that after every matchday you hold a new draw, and each team is paired against a team with equal (or almost equal) number of points, and which they haven't played yet. Just like in chess. This would mathematically guarantee that no more than one team can achieve maximum points. Instead, they keep the seeding pot system. Each team will get 2 opponents (one home, one away) from each pot, including their own. Pot 1 teams will get 2 additional pot 1 teams and will lose the advantage of only facing lower ranked teams. Pot 4 teams will get 2 additional pot 4 teams, giving them more opportunities to gain more points and catch up with higher ranked teams.

Thanks for this amazing vid. Was able to explain EVERYTHING I feel about the ESL so succinctly and completely. It really is a race to see who can kill the golden goose between EPL clubs (whether they have state backing or not), state-owned clubs, the SPL, and other European clubs that don’t have that. I understand how this can help make other European giants competitive again but at the end of the day, no matter how altruistic they claim their efforts to be (which are as close to nil as possible), money talks and the ESL will become the predominant league if revenue streams are as Perez envisions.

I think a lot of people are missing the point with regards to this SL format. They don't see that this still lacks a lot of meritocracy and will have a massive damaging effect on domestic leagues. So lets say the Star League has all the origianl ESL founders plus a few others. Chelsea have another bad season in the PL and finish 14th in the league, but manage to avoid relegation from the Star league. Meanwhile Newcastle (who for arguments sake) havent been invited into any of the 3 ESL divisions, win the PL. The winners of the PL in the following season get the privilege of playing Blue league football whilst chelsea who finished 14th enjoy the benfits of being in the star League? Thats not a great meritocracy. It then in turn makes the PL less appealing, as there is no top 4/european football race, thus increasing the size of the 'mid table' . If teams in the PL are in 2nd or 3rd but can't realistically catch the leader in lets say March, then it makes the rest of their seasosns pointless, because there is no reward for finishing in 2nd, 3rd or 4th. It diminishes the value of every domestic league

Two things can be true at the same time. UEFA and FIFA are corrupt, FFP is a joke and oil clubs are a problem. However, the fact remains that this would kill the soul of the sport. Trying to make every match a blockbuster would severely diminish those special moments of underdog victory (Bournemouth beating United, Girona beating Barca). The whole thing feels less like an alternative to the CL and more like Real and Barca throwing a temper tantrum because they are no longer the richest clubs around. Perez never had problems with spending big when the galacticos were a thing, but sure, let him save football. The ESL ultimately holds a position that there are clubs that have a borderline god given right to be at the top of the sport. That is not how things work, and frankly it would be just as problematic as any UEFA or FIFA competition if it was to happen, which seems highly unlikely as things stand now.

It is just about protecting the money of the big clubs at its heart. Take a new club that does really well in their league, as an example Leicester, in the current situation when they won the EPL, they had an automatic guaranteed CL spot in the groups and the guaranteed cash that comes with that. In this format they would go into the 'Blue' league, essentially the conference league, the equivalent of finishing 7th or 8th in the EPL, that would come with far far less money and exposure. So even in the blue league, they then have to fight their way through at least 2 seasons (to get to gold and star), against teams earning much more than them to ever get to the top competition, it is a complete uphill battle. Whereas someone like Chelsea might have been in the Star league through that whole period, might have finished 6th, 9th and 10th in the EPL over 3 seasons, but as long as they were not too bad in the Super League, they would be earning all that Super league money. attracting the best players because they want to play in the Super League and paying big wages because of that SL cash, but plucky Leicester even winning the EPL and performing way better than Chelsea over those 3 seasons, they earn way way less money despite being better. Not only does this protect the super clubs from your Man Citys, PSGs, Chelseas etc. clubs that get pushed up by investment, but it protects them from your Leicesters, Atalantas, Sevillas, clubs that just have great seasons, unearth some gem players and finish higher in their domestic leagues than traditional big clubs, it also protects them from mediocre seasons, there is no real issue with a Liverpool or Real having a bad domestic seasons and finishing 6th or 7th because they will stay in the SL and all that cash, PLUS being in that SL will give them so much cash that them having a bad season is even less likely to happen. It is pure keeping the rich rich and making an exclusive club at the top of the European game that stops 'upstart' clubs being well run or well funded (or both) from entering the club. A club having a great domestic season with good recruitment and upsetting the big boys despite having less money, will not get rewarded, they will have to perform for 3 years straight to reach the top of the game, at a complete disadvantage.

The best argument in favour of the Superleague is wealth redistribution. There is an inherent imbalance in the fact that, while clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern are owned by fans and therefore are tied economically to their brand value (and the revenue they generate from sport), other clubs can be bought by whomever has the money and be flooded by almost unlimited resources, regardless on where they come from. While ones are tied to generating money from the footballing world, others aren't. Every fan owned club will be, in time, forced into banktrupcy, while multibillionaires will play Football Manager between themselves. No footballing fan benefits from this. The clearest example might be Unai Emery, a manager who took a club from a city of 50K inhabitants to UEL glory and then the next year beat Bayern on its way to a CL semifinal, left to go to the 18th (!!!!!!!) placed team in the Premier League, and didn't do so for love or prestige. In no world should that happen, specially if the money being offered does not come from football. (No need to give Chelsea's spending antics as an example) In summary, an NBA-style cost cap is needed if football is to remain competitive. About the rest: - The league would be controlled by the clubs instead of UEFA, which would make money going to UEFA right now go to the clubs. Less UEFA corruption, more club power. I would need to see a wealth redistribution plan for the rest of the teams that aren't taking part in SL, though. - Free TV streaming is a marketing stunt to increase attractiveness, but also tackles two very real problems in TV prices and internet piracy. - Format is made to be as close as possible to the actual European competition structure. I like the premise of watching higher-quality games all year round, but it's too rigid. There should be consequences for a club being terrible for a season, something like the bottom two Star League teams dropping all the way down to Blue and another two to Gold, or something like that. The more mobility while maintaining the structure, the better. - There is too much independence from national leagues. As @RabonaTV pointed out, the incentive for teams to focus on the Superleague would be very high, taking away from the excitement of national leagues. However, one could argue that already happens with the Champions League. Maybe an "instant relegation if lower than 12th on national league" for Star league clubs would be nice. - It would take away chances from "one season club wonders" to capitalise on their success, as they couldn't get directly into higher competitions and get the revenue they would if they got into CL quarterfinals and faced Bayern. Change in football is necessary. UEFA being punched in the guts is necessary. Is SL the solution? I don't know, I hope so. But if not, either the footballing world will become more united or hell is going to ensue. I predict the second

This is the best take I’ve seen on the ESL project, everyone else just blindly says “but it will kill small clubs competing in European football!!!” Without giving a second thought as to how fan controlled clubs are beginning to permanently lose the ability to compete with privately owned clubs due to UEFA’s monopoly
@Jardermorder
@Jardermorder 4 ай бұрын
@@josea1707 not only that, but SL gives a better chance to mid-table and lower teams qualifying to actually retain the revenue they generate from the Blue league. This is because for clubs to lose the SL income they need to get relegated, instead of needing to have another wonder season in the national leagues to qualify for European competition, which never happens as the wear and tear from playing everything usually prevents smaller clubs from doing well in the national league in back-to-back years.

The Super League idea even in its new format just doesn't work. Thinking about it, it may reduce the ability bottom half teams from EPL to compete with bigger European teams for players as we have seen recently, but any top 10 English team that makes it even into the 3rd tier Blue League will still be able to match offers from most top 4 EU teams. Plus, one thing that isn't being talked about enough is how the increased revenue for the teams in the Super League will simply serve to widen the gap between the top teams vs the bottom teams domestically. At the moment the Premier League is slowly killing all other national leagues. The Premier League is the most popular league, receives by far the most money, will therefore continue to attract the best players, and will just gain more global popularity. Without miracle players like Messi and Ronaldo, even La Liga is doomed. Effectively, the Premier League will be the Super League, and only young and second rate players will play in other competitions. This will also kill the Champions League, since it won't be interesting to see matches between rich English clubs and poor non-English clubs. To fix this, all national leagues could be merged into a Premier League with three or four regional conferences. But it may already be too late.

Having a European pyramid would benefit clubs like Celtic, who you know will get in the Champions league but majority finish 4th in their group. The league would be good for developing sides with home grown and 23 or Under like the Olympics players for clubs like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Man City etc they can use academy players and players like Kalvin Philip who don't get game time, the club get a manager that has just started so they get experience and they have a replacement ready for Someone like Klopp and Pep when they retire or leave.

My guess is that this is being done in order to catch up with the EPL's TV deals and overall revenue while also ensuring they are able to pay off debt. My guess: The ESL (European Super League) is making a calculated play that the EPL teams will not join the Super League, meaning that over a period of about a decade or so, they will be able to be on par (or maybe even above) the EPL teams' revenues. Maybe they will try to aim for some of the teams outside of the traditional Big 6 to join the ESL in the next few years? Who knows. I think the English clubs know this is a poisoned chalice if they go in for it, whether sanctions from the EPL, fan boycotts, or even government regulation to save the EPL. Will be really interesting to see what happens. I hope my club (Liverpool) will stay away from this like it's the plague.

Partially yes, catching up with Engliah team's revenue is a reason for this, but the super league ia a projwct3 that has been developed sonce before the huge tv deal of the premier. I think this is more about oil money clubs and UEFA monopoly and money distribution. Real Madrid can compete against English clubs for now, but it is impossible to compete against oil money clubs with unlimited money, and UEFA is so corrupted that they are helping those oil money clubs. They are killing football, the superleague could be the salvation for this sport.

I don't like Super League. But, the argument that even if Real Madrid finishes 12 in La Liga but third last in Star League would ensure its place in Star League next season, and that is bad. I agree. But Villareal won UEL in 21/22 while being 7th in La Liga. And they booked their place in UCL next season despite having lower La Liga position than Sociedad and Betis. So, kinda same. Theoretically, you can get relegated in domestic league but if you manage to win UEL, UCL or UECL in same season, you are still guaranteed a place in European Competition next season. In England, if a team from 3rd division manages to win FA Cup, it is guaranteed at least a play off qualification round for next season UCL.

What I would highlight the most on the ruling is that, if FIFA and or UEFA ever piss off some european clubs, there is nothing they can do if those clubs decided to breakaway from them. So it means more power for the clubs. I don't see ESL as a solution either, but rather as a platform if say the number of pissed off clubs are "many". Current format is so so and I believe would be tweaked over time. I am curious how uefa/fifa would alter their approach towards european clubs with this ruling actually.

Realistically if Madrid cam first in super league and 3rd in Laliga then yes they would still be on top in some regard but that puts enphasis on the fact that one not top domestic season doesn't knock you out because the team still has merit as it won the super league which is probably harder to win.

Unpopular opinion here. I think there is scope for changing football in Europe to help leagues compete with the premier league. Smaller countries, for example Belgium and Netherlands could greatly benefit from merging their leagues. Increased competition means more money and just a better quality league all around. We already have this in England where Welsh teams play in the English league and I believe there might be one or two small Scottish clubs in the pyramid. The prospect of Rangers and Celtic joining the English system has been around for ages and I believe this would be mutually beneficial for both leagues. There was also talk of having an Irish based club in the English system. Point is we shouldn't be constrained by tradition or national borders. But these things should only happen if it is mutually beneficial to both leagues. Not just for the profit motive. So while I am against the super league for these reasons, I am not against radical reforms to help level the gap between the Premier League money and the leagues that are being left behind financially and I do think there is a need for some radical reforms.

@edmann1820
@edmann1820 4 ай бұрын
@@TiagoSilvaESC Many Welsh and Scottish people would take issue with your comment. They are their own countries. Britain is a union of four nations. Like a mini EU. When the project for an Irish team joining the English system was attempted (in the 90's) it was the Irish FA that shot down the proposal. The English FA only backed the IFA out of solidarity.. I don't think Portugal and Spain merging would be a good idea. I believe the Portuguese league is strong enough to stand on it's own. A pan Scandinavian league could be another example. I wouldn't recommend this for political reasons but it can't be denied that when Yugoslavia existed they were stronger together than apart. When Catalonia was attempting independence a couple of years ago the idea was floated that Barcelona could join the French league. I think the French league is the most troubling. Their clubs are really struggling for money with TV deals dropping drastically. Clubs in Europe may really come under threat for survival if some reform isn't made which I think would be a sad thing. If reform is needed and would result in better competition then it's better to face the fact and construct a plan that benefits football in those nations rather than leaving it in the hands of people whose only motivation is how to make more money.

I'm from the Netherlands but the real problem isn't the level of competition. Its how the competition is being funded in the first place. The Super League was a reaction to the way UEFA ignored the increasement of foreign investors in the PL to the point mid-table teams started to compete even more with the top 6. The problem is that foreign investors are a much smaller presence in Spain, Italy, France and other nations that seek to achieve the competitive nature of the PL. If players are talented in these countries, there's a good chance a mid-table team in the PL will pick them up from their leagues therefore robbing those leagues of their talent. Madrid and Barca act altruistic but they know deep down that a Super League would massively hurt UEFA and the Premier League. Its a matter of staying competitive against unlimited funds (Chelsea, Man City, almost United, PSG, Newcastle utd etc)

I am not opposed to a pan-European league as a concept but what I find most sickening is that UEFA pretends to be on the side of football and said something like “football is not for sale”…. Umm right so why did they change the format and desperately trying to make the tournaments bigger? If it’s not for money, then hey redistribute them to the clubs. The root cause for a breakaway is that clubs supply players and provide entertainment and only get a chunk of the big pie where as UEFA does fuck all and get a big pie and they also control how the pie is cut and shared!
