iraq and turkey were not colonized. most of the Kurdish claims are in iraq . * Iraq was colonized but the border was defined by the Kars Treaty between moscow and turkey . The british took over what was left of the ottoman province of Iraq .

Turkey shouldn't fear Kurdish identity that much. Look at Kurdistan region. It has great ties with Turkey. Kurds need a state. It could be the Kurdish areas within Iraq and Syria. These countries were formed only a few decades ago. I strongly believe Kurds will remain happy within Turkey and Iran if there was a Kurdish state.

I don’t believe the issue is primarily about identity but rather the recognition of territorial integrity. As someone who is both a PhD in sociology and half Kurdish myself, I can assure you there is no issue with openly identifying as Kurdish in public or elsewhere. Turks, Kurds, and other ethnicities have coexisted for centuries. While I don’t want to sound deterministic, the core problem seems to revolve around the recognition of territorial integrity.

The Syrian government does not have the overwhelming force that is needed to bring the Kurdish forces under control. So, Turkey would need to provide that overwhelming force to the new Syrian government, much the same way, for example, the Iranian and Russian forces provided support to the Assad regime :)
