@@liam_antho7 No it doesn't. The B-21 isn't something slapped together in China, or especially Russia, with mostly Western parts, and Western technology.... and not as advertised. It is Western, and it will do what the U.S. says it will. The cost is high; but, it will work.

Not really a viable path to upgrade raw performance here. Both are high sub sonic bombers. Only difference would be ones in payload. B21 expected to carry long range cruise missiles, including LRASM. Which will pose a viable threat to Chinese naval assets close to shore. Also likely to carry hypersonic weapons such as the current in development HACM. Which will be operational by the time B-21 is fielded. One thing I’m curious about is whether a B-21 could carry air to air missiles. With long range missiles such as AIM-260 and LREW. B21 can carry a lot of these missiles. And since it can easily communicate data with other assets such as fighters, drones, ships, AWACS. It could become a long range missile truck to take on Chinese fighters. This would be useful due to the very long range and limited basing options the US has in the pacific

The B-21 is not an unmanned aircraft or drone. It is designed to be one component in a manned/unmanned "airpower teaming system" for some combat missions. The unmanned components will be smaller UAV's that will accompany the B21 on some missions, commonly known as "autonomous wingmen."

I think, even in unmanned case, B-21 will have a pilot enjoying coffee inside the plane, but he will give control to a remote pilot while he enjoys his coffee. This hybrid approach will reduce stress on pilot when plane is just cruising.

@@ppen8359 If this is the case I wonder what they will do if a plane on an unmanned mission gets its communication system cut off. It has to communicate wirelessly and it's not that hard to jam any kind of wireless data transfer if you can locate the source. If this is the case they have to be very confident in its stealth capabilities as locating it with a one mile accuracy should be enough to completely cut it off from outside world. Maybe I am wrong though as our most potent enemy is probably Russia and they can't even jam old Ukrainian fighter jets. China might be better at it, but direct contact with them is unlikely so far.

It is a reduced mainenance cost B-2, and since the B-1 pork barrel sucked up all the cash they had to chop the number of B-2s ordered. Probably for the better in hindsight, as the B-2 is extremely high maintenance cost to keep its low radar signature. Frequent recoating and re-taping seams just for starters.

Bull S. The B-1 has been a work horse in the post 911 response era flying missions every day. The B-1 came in under buget and has been a very effective deterent force against America's enemies, there really is no price that can be put on that. If the big donkey had been allowed to cancell the B-1 then the donkey would have also cancelled the B-2 as well. Remember that it was Republican administrations who built both of those planes and the B-21 while the donkey railed in opposition.

The most important part of the b21 is that it can be stored in a normal hanger. The b2 needed special hangers that an adversary could track with satellites so they would know where all the b2s were. The b21 can be anywhere and impossible to track

700 million sounds like a lot, but it is a great price considering the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit which they use now as the top stealth bomber cost 2.1 Billion a piece if you count the 1997 upgrades, which you should. You can also fly it without personnel, and has a lot more advanced features. So it is a good price.

The cost per airframe could increase to billions if they prematurely end production like they did w/ B-2. Fewer airframes over which to allocate the fixed program costs. Nonetheless, I'm sure under the same external economic conditions and using a benchmark time value of dollars, B-21 is cheaper than B-2.

The B-2 started being designed in the 1970s. Each B-2 was going to cost 400 million dollars, but the cold war ended and Clinton canceled the manufacture of more. That means the R&D was only amortized to 21 actually built, instead of the 100 to 150 originally planned for production. The B-21 is simply an updated B-2 and it is only about 75% as large and there will be 5 test aircraft + 100 production aircraft built. BTW, I think the B-21 was supposed to come out last year, but the meme-flu slowed down the test aircraft being made.

A pure jet engine uses impellers on the inside, which move at much faster speed. Most helicopters are simple prop jobs even if they are powered by jet engines. Instead of using the jet exhaust for thrust, they use the engine mainly for power, because jet engines can be made much smaller than diesel engines. When fuel isn't the top priority, this makes sense.

The B-21's "deterrent" capability is that it can be used to first strike your opponent's nuclear forces and command and control centers, and eliminate their second strike capabilities.
