POINTS ON TAIWAN There are no internationally recognised treaties, policies or UN resolutions that state that Taiwan is part of China. Also, historically, China has had minimal control over the island of Taiwan, I will explain further below. Now some facts about Taiwan: 1: The island now known as Taiwan was inhabited and ruled by the aborigines for approximately 30,000 years. 2: When the Dutch arrived in 1626 most of the population of Formosa were the Yuanzhumin or Gaoshan people (who have no DNA link back to China) 3: The Qing who were Manchu not Chinese had minimal control of Taiwan in fact the Qing only managed to rule less than 20% of the island while the aborigines ruled and controlled over 80% of the island. The Qing created a border in 1750 with rocks which was called the Tu Niu Red Line. The Japanese were the first country to colonise Formosa and create roads and infrastructure.. 4: Due to the lack of control, the Qing did not declare Formosa a Province of the Qing until 1895 as the Japanese was encroaching on the island. The island was handed to Japan soon after. 5: Over the past 400 years the island has been partially ruled by 5 different governments but it was only the Japanese and ROC who had full control of the entire island. 6: Historically the CCP recognized Formosan independence. In 1936, when the Republic of China (ROC) was China’s government and Taiwan (Formosa) was a Japanese colony, Chairman Mao Zedong offered support to Korea and Formosa if their peoples wished to gain independence from Japan. Mao’s internationalist position suggested that 1) both Korea and Formosa have a right to independence, and 2) this is based on the right to self-determination. Mao did not claim that Taiwan has been an integral part of China. (look up Edgar Snow interview)) 7: The Cairo Declaration 1943 discussed the possibility of handing the island of Taiwan to the ROC. This discussion required a treaty to become official and was never implemented. 8: The PRC constitution was formed in 1949 yet Taiwan was not added to it until 1978. 9: The ROC were granted a caretaker role of Formosa after WW2 but when the ROC escaped to the island it still legally belonged to Japan. 10: When Japan relinquished its sovereignty of Taiwan with The Treaty of San Francisco after the ROC invaded the Japanese island, China was not even invited. The treaty was signed by 49 nations but both the ROC and CCP were NOT present. 11: The One China Policy, Un Resolution 2758 or the Treaty of San Francisco do not declare that Taiwan is a province of China. There are no internationally recognized treaties, policies or UN resolutions that state that Taiwan is part of China. The only legal way that Taiwan can amalgamate with China is if they agree to a treaty ceding their sovereignty. Whether Taiwan is considered a country or not does not automatically grant China with sovereignty of the region

The title is misleading. The problem isn't calling ourselves Taiwanese. The problem is how us Taiwanese define the word Taiwan. The official name of our country isn't "Taiwan" it's the "ROC." The PRC and the ROC has a "Governing Relations Act between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area." This means our relationship officially is not "country vs country." It all had to do with the US (sadly again) switching recognition from one Chinese government to another. The US playing games as usual to protect their own interests. The lady in the video also made false comments about how we don't consider ourselves as Chinese in the 70s. During the Tiananmen incident in 89, we clearly reached out to our compatriots on the mainland to show our support in solidarity. We never refused to acknowledge our Chinese roots until post 2000s. We just want to see a different China. One that is closer to our values in the ROC. The current tension is due to the US strategy of containing the rise of the PRC using the ROC as a pawn and canon fodder. I do not accept the Ukraine model for the ROC.

You can't establish a Taiwanese national identity without attacking and breaking down the Chinese national identity. It's like if Texas were to become an independent country by rejecting the American national identity rather than keeping the American identity but rejecting federal ruling. It will break down the American identity and make other states with strong state identity like California to leave the US too and eventually a full dissolution of the US. The idea that Taiwan could keep its democratic way of governing by separating its national identity with mainland Chinese is all but an idea supported by the US to break down the Chinese national identity and China itself. It will certainly lead to a war, since most Chinese do not support the idea of self-destruction. America is trying to make it look like the war is due to CCP dictatorship and Chinese expansionism, and that the reason for Chinese mainlanders to support reunification is because they are brainwashed, that is simply not true. A more practical approach would be to brand Taiwan as a stronghold of democracy within the Chinese nation, and an advocator for a Chinese federation or confederation. This idea is supported by some Taiwanese and could have been mainstream in Taiwan. However, it is not in America's interest for China to remain a unified competitor, authoritarian or democracy, unitary or a federation/confederation. Therefore, a more radical war-prone Taiwanese national movement approach became mainstream.

Chinese naval expansion is unprecedented in human history; China produces more naval vessels per year than all NATO and US allies combined. China is now a USA in steroids; however when we look at quality of these naval vessels, they are not combat tested and carries much less VLS missiles with shorter range than that of USA; also China cannot quantitatively surpass USA(at least for next 25 years) in terms of fighter jets that USA has deployed in and around the pacific. Even though China could inflict some harm on US Naval base and naval vessels; USA can nearly obliterate China's coastal line in an event of full scale war- which will likely involve exchange of Nuclear payloads if war prolongs.

1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan. 2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented. 3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS and Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC). 4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues. 5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law and is recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA. "The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China." "The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China." Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979. Please refer to President Jimmy Carter's Speech on Relations with China. 6) Therefore, according to international law, international reality, and the wishes of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, Taiwan should return to PRC and the PRC have every rights to protect it's sovereign integrity.
There are 188 countries in the world: Taiwan is a province of China! United Nations: Taiwan is a province of China!

As Taiwanese, we speak and read Chinese (dialects and mandarin), believe in Chinese religions (Taoism and Buddhism), eat Chinese style food. Vast majority (95%) of our ancestors were immigrants from China. The issue is NOT as complicated as you think, very similar to the situation between East and West Germany.

Funny, how this kind of reasoning is always applied one-way, but never the other way. Or are you saying the Uyghurs have a point when they want to be separate from the PRC? It would be way more beneficial if the PRC would ask itself *why* current-day Taiwan would prefer to go it alone as a friendly neighbour rather than as a PRC Province. Friendly neighbours to trade with are usually way more beneficial to a country than angry provinces. I guess a big reason why the CCP cannot imagine an independent Taiwan that shares so many similarities with the population of the PCR is because of all the questions it would raise internally in the PRC. A bit like how the Putin regime cannot accept an independent Ukraine as a neighbour, with which it shares so much history and culture, as that also raises too many uncomfortable questions inside of Russia.

Again, the issue is not complicated. Besides, Ukraine has every right to be independent because it is recognized as a sovereign nation by the world community. It is also a member of the United Nations, the ROC (Taiwan) unfortunately is NOT. We are facing far more difficult situation than Ukraine and yet it was invaded by Russia. If the nations of the world don’t even have the courage to recognize us as a sovereign nation, please have a decency to recognize your own cowardice. Yes, we Taiwanese will fight for our beliefs in democracy, rules of law and liberty, but NOT our nationality. We are the citizens of the Republic of China, nothing else.

People here ask: "How can Taiwan be split from the PRC when it's never been part of it ?" Answer: Because in its constitution the Republic of China ("Taiwan") refers to itself as the "free part of China", etc., and because all but 12 of the 195 countries of the world regard Taiwan as part of China, and the PRC as its only legitimate representative (one-China-policy).
