This year's Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in the Swedish host city of Malmo was already proving controversial. There have been protests and tensions surrounding Israel's ESC participation while the war in Gaza is ongoing.
In a separate controversial incident, Netherlands' contestant Joost Klein has been disqualified. Klein did not perform in Friday's dress rehearsals, following what organizers described as "an incident". He'd then been removed from the contest with a police investigation into a complaint from a female member of the production crew. His song "Euro-papa" was among the favorites to win.

I agree. It's an incredibly big contest with lots of press and the pressure on these artists going into Eurovision is high. Most of them are just famous in their own countries and it's the first time dealing with big audiences. They should make an effort to help artists manage this. By making sure their space is respected.

@@jozefien.n If it was the first time she had filmed him, then and there, it would be different, but it was the third(?) time she did it after he told her twice(?) he didn't want that... What I understand from the Dutch media, is that she filmed him, the first time, last week during rehearsals, right after coming off of the stage, just after the emotional part(for him at least (the death of his parents) of his performance, he didn't want to be filmed right after that, and she did it again after he told her not to do that, and then after the third time he pushed her phone away... So basically you could take out a country's artist(s) by making a complaint, true or falls, doesn't matter... So yeah, it's a real shame for one of the favorites to go out like this...

no, it isn't. Eurovision did the right thing and acted promptly and professionally. now we can know that Eurovision performers won't make any threats or have any kind of abusive attitude anymore, without risking to be disqualified. Joost had no right to display such behavior and to threaten anyone, no matter how annoyed he might have been by their presence. an Eurovision contester can't do that and expect no consequences. he only had the right to make legal complains for whatever he thought was any breach of contract, and deal with the problem in a professional and civilized way, but, instead, he chose to do it his way... and that wasn't the only line he crossed, but he also cross it with the Eden from Israel, at the press conference, when he jumped on her verbally, without being his business, and tried to provoke and to compel her to answer to a provocative and political question.

EBU made a big mistake by disqualifying the Netherlands. Big. HUGE. Joost didn't do anything wrong, it is quite the opposite; The camera woman was harassing Joost. Joost did NOT touch her. The camera woman kept filming him, even while this is in breech of EBU's contract with the artist not to film backstage. Joost asked her twice to stop filming and she kept filming him, so he made a gesture to the camera not even to the camera woman! EBU disqualifying Joost is like victim blaming and so not right. I hope justice will be served and there will be pressed charges against the EBU and their camera woman. Joost, you are in our hearts and everyone knows you were the public's choice. Dutch here: What happened has come out. Joost had made an agreement that directly after his performance he was not to be put on video. To give him a bit of a pause / breathing room this because he goes through a lot of emotion. Later he attends camera / video. There was a woman who had been bothering him from before with a camera. That day she was bothering him once again. He repeatedly ask her to stop filming her. Then when she did not, he went to the camera and much like some police do put his hand to the camera. I believe he tried to lower the camera. This is the story, this is what officially transpired. It is ridicules the situation.

The incident unfolded at a highly emotional time for Joost. At the end of his performance, he saluted his father, a gesture that moved him to tears. Understanding the sensitivity of the moment, Joost had previously requested not to be filmed as he left the stage. However, after his semi-finals performance, a camerawoman continued to film him despite his repeated requests to stop. Overwhelmed and seeking privacy, Joost made a gesture towards the camera to insist she cease filming, although he made no physical contact with her. The camerawoman, perhaps feeling personally affronted, chose to file a complaint. The decision by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to withhold footage of Joost's alleged "threatening movement" has only fueled further speculation and confusion. Releasing this footage could have clarified the situation, potentially exonerating the artist and demonstrating that the decision to disqualify him was unrelated to this incident. Instead, it appears the disqualification may be tied more closely to Joost's controversial remark about Israels participation in the song contest. During a press conference, a Polish journalist asked the Israeli contestant, Golan, whether she thought her participation might pose a security risk to others, given Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza, referencing the pro-Palestinian rallies in Malmo during the Eurovision Song Contest. Swedish presenter Jovan Radomir quickly intervened, informing Golan that she doesn't have to answer this question. It was at this moment that Joost Klein, interjected with a simple "Why not?", that challenged the avoidance of this delicate subject. This indicated his support for transparency and dialogue on difficult topics. His disqualification followed shortly after this interaction, not immediately after the alleged threatening gesture made days earlier toward a crew member. Additionally, if a formal complaint has been filed with Swedish police, the EBU should have allowed the legal process to conclude before taking action. Presuming innocence until proven guilty is a fundamental principle that should have guided their actions.

This camera person was repeatedly asked not to film and kept doing it against the agreements made. She was harrassing Joost with her camera and violated his private space by doing so. Now, he may have reacted unwisely at some point but I feel that a safe working environment is created together. On top of that, even if he did react in an unprofessional way, a reprimand would've been enough, but the EBU decided to cancel him out of fear of repercussions for themselves. And now their decision means that there is a new road created to influence the contest in an unprecedented way, because apparently you can get someone cancelled by filing a complaint and the EBU overreacting. ' Just think of making a mistake at work and your boss just firing you over it, before the investigation is completed to find out whether or not you crossed any legal boundaries.

Thank you EBU for destroying someone’s childhood dream. I hope you feel proud of what you did. I hope you will sleep well at night, knowing that you purposely did him wrong when all he asked for was that his personal space be acknowledged and that his privacy be respected. You not only deliberately shattered his life’s dream into pieces but you also crushed his hope. If that wasn’t enough, you hurt the feelings of fans from all around the world. You took away all their joy and happiness and replaced them with a lot of emotional pain, trauma and confusion. And for the people of The Netherlands who were really excited and enthusiastic about their entry this year, this was a direct stab in the heart. On top of that, you also had to twist and turn the knife just so you could punish and humiliate the whole nation. They absolutely did not deserve this miscarriage of justice. Luckily, the Dutch are known to be resilient and with time I’m sure they will survive this devastation. If anything, this will only make them stronger. You may have unjustly disqualified Joost from the competition, but in our hearts and minds, he will always be our hero and our winner. EBU, it’s time for you to do some self-reflection. Look at yourself in the mirror. Can you even smile at yourself after deliberately creating all these mess and causing a lot of pain to others just because you could? What should have happened if everyone here was a well adjusted adult: - If the EBU ordered the camerawoman to do what she did Joost should apologize to the women for being aggressive and the EBU should apologize for breaking Joosts boundaries and putting the camera women in a bad spot. - If the camera women acted on her own she should apologize to Joost for breaking his boundaries and Joost may feel it is right to apologize back for being overly aggressive, if he wants to. The EBU should apologize to Joost for not keeping staff in check and the camera women needs a talking to, or moved to another position. What happened: The EBU heared that Joost was being agressive towards a camerawomen, and somewhere on a document is says that any artist being aggressive towards staff gets disqualified. Now Joost got disqualified for defending his boundries, which were broken due to the EBUs mistake or lack of control over their own staff. What was the whole day long hearing and the police getting involved for if they weren't gonna handle it like adults?

A safe work environment goes for everybody and she was in violation. The EBU is in the wrong in any way you look at this. They are protecting a criminal. Joost is just a lam for slaughter. What really is going on is that they needed deflection from the Palestinian protests ,which were broadcast all over the world and hurting their main sponsor: Moroccan Oil, which is not Moroccan at all, but Israeli. It, again, shows that the EBU is a controversial body by itself. It was agreed upon that there would be no filming of mr. Klein after the song. The woman in question however did film and after having told here several times not to, mr. Klein reacted. That's called human behavior. Lets just stop with this horror called ESC. Once a nice institute where countries, in their own language, sang a nice song. Often with music typical for their country. Now it's a commercial hodgepodge.

What I find very confusing is how all parties involved haven’t exactly given real evidence for their claims. A police investigation sounds really serious but a „threatening move towards“ someone wouldn’t really justify that? And everyone posting about it tells the story a bit differently, adding information (where it happened, background or other rumors about his behavior). Personally if he did something wrong disqualification would be the right move but we don’t know that yet. So maybe they could have allowed him to compete and in the case of being guilty disqualified him later.

Fact of the matter remains that there was an agreement not to film him and that she had been told multiple times not to bother him. He was only protecting his personal space which was agreed upon. You don't go blaming rape victims for being raped do you? She is the one in violation, whatever you make of it and the EBU cannot wipe themselves clean from this as they are in violation also. He had every right to defend his personal space, we give Ukraine even weapons to defend their own personal space. So this is a non issue. But in reality this is about deflecting from the attention the Palestinian protests were getting all over the world, which was hurting the main sponsor: Moroccan Oil, which is not Moroccan at all, but Israeli. The EBU is full of politics and the hunt for money. They are hypocrites and manipulators of the public.

Looking at this logically, the EBU has previously gone above and beyond for artists to be able to compete and kicking them out is a very last resort decision. It does not benefit them nor their reputation in any way to do this without a valid reason.
