Thanks Matti. I just upgraded two days ago so this video certainly helps. You’re right, there is a lot of stuff on this App, and it takes time to know - and remember - where everything is. Having the masks in one place certainly helps, and I have tried them.

My main tool is Capture One (C1) but expecially for noise reduction and lens correction I use in my C1 workflow DxO Photolab. As an import is not necessary after import and first inspection I may open a selected raw file in DxO directly form the C1 folder do some changes and export it as dng file back into the C1 folder beeing able to neatlessly continue my worlflow in C1. A dng fiel from DxO is roughly a raw file with rendered colors but even able to change the white balance - contrary to a jpeg or tiff file.

For me the most useful feature DxO offers are the lens corrections, which I think they are superb. However, this is not a new feature but already present in previous versions. I think for new users this is worth mentioning.

They are a huge time saver, but not always perfect. F. i., the distortion profile for the Olympus 17mm/1.8 isn’t accurate. At least wasn’t, as long as I had that lens.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto Жыл бұрын
@@hauke3644 It's a little hard to say what is accurate, when electronic corrections come into play. For example Lightroom follows the manufacturer's in camera corrections and the photo looks the same as from the camera. DxO instead likes to squeeze everything out of the lens and in most cases you'll get a bit wider area in your photo compared to the in camera photo. Other than that the DxO profile for the 17mm F1.8 looks great in both PL6 and PL7.
@hauke3644
@hauke3644 Жыл бұрын
@@mattisulanto I remember that I needed to reduce the correction to 90% for that lens in order to get a straight line straight. But that’s a few years ago, maybe they adjusted the profile. I‘ll have a look on the 12-40mm lens, which had a similar issue at 12mm

DXO, from my experience, struggles a lot with Vignette correction. It often overcorrects the corners, and there is no way to assign it manually a permanent correction factor for a lens.

Thank you Matti, i’m considering to leave the Adobe suite (Ps and LrC) but if for Ps i’ve already chosen Affinity Photo, i’m still searching a good Lrc alternative, i have not a huge amount of photos to handle with LrC catalogs but, for my needs, it is mandatory to shoot tethered, is photolab 7 capable to do that? I have a question! I convert the photos in pure raw, I import the files into Lightroom to merge them, the HDR file is generated. After this I'm wondering whether to export the file generated on Lightroom to TIFF. ,Merging the photos into film pack or making some corrections in lightroom and exporting to film pack and then returning to lightroom.

This may be a silly question, but what is your workflow from camera to print? Back in time I tried to use DxO to perform lens distortion corrections to my RAW-files, save them as DNG and then import them into Lightroom/CaptureOne for library storage and ran into weird problems with LR/C1 not recognizing these DNG-images anymore as RAW-files and then disabling editing features for any further edits. Therefore currently stuck with importing RAW-files directly into C1 at the moment, but would like to use the superb noise correction of DxO for some images even today.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto Жыл бұрын
Not a silly question but the answer would be too long here. Maybe some I'll make a video on that topic. Why don't you use DxO the last, after you have done everything else in C1?
@Sir-Fix-a-Lot
@Sir-Fix-a-Lot Жыл бұрын
Because DxO is even pickier about anything else touching a RAW-file before it. Regardless in what format I export (DNG, TIFF 8/16bit, PSD, JPG) out of C1, with or without any corrections, DxO (5.15 in my case) will disable all Prime & DeepPrime noise reduction features and it won't even open the 16-bit DNG-files that C1 produces. It just complains that it doesn't have Optics Module for the image even though the camera and lens metadata is present in all exported formats. @@mattisulanto

Thank you. The upgrade price from 5 and 6 is £99 quid. 6 was released 5 Oct 2022 so one year later ... Is this too soon? The colour calibrator looks good but colour charts are not cheap. The only colour chart I have is for a slide scanner. 7 comes with "B&W Workflow" but not Film Pack

I just few weeks ago tried DxO PhotoLab version 6, because I really dislike Adobe pricing model. But I had a big issue with Photolab... when I was adjusting something, the quality of image decrease and only when I let something go the effect is applied to full res image. It makes it for me unusable, because what is the point of previewing change in low-res? It should always be the same resolution so you can actually see the changes you are making. Is it fixed in version 7?
