You almost got it right. Jennie wrote this song thinking about the other trainees that didn't make it to debut. In the netflix documentary, she talks about having to send home a great friend of hers every month because of the strict evaluation. I personally think the romantic aura/lyrics of the song was added later by Teddy and YG's producers to make the song more relatable.

You should watch their performance of this song last October 2021 for the Dear Earth campaign. You would see how different they are from 5 years ago. Also, comebacks are basically when an artist release a new song from a new album or even a single (an example of this is As If It’s Your Last-doesn’t belong to any album and was released as a single song). This can be several times a year, or even more than a year (Blackpink has been notorious for long hiatus between comebacks). This song was a comeback (November 2016 when they released their second EP) after they debuted (August 2016 when they released their first EP).

Always disliked the term "comeback", understood what they ment but.... it literally means: a return by a well-known person, especially an entertainer or sports player, to the activity in which they have FORMERLY been successful. "Stay" is one of my favorite BlackPInk songs, it probably tops the list. We know that Jennie was, at least, involved in the writing of "Stay".... it's the reason she got so emotional during one of the performances. How much she was involved is not "known". She is NOT credited, and OFTEN the members have not been. I don't like it when people talk in absolutes, Jennie may have wrote the whole song... But we don't know, which is unfortunate. It's in BlackPink's contract..... the Members can't date, smoke, drink, get tattoos, drive, go to clubs(unless it's on official business), or get any cosmetic surgery. Some of these were only for the first 3 yrs(not sure of the exact time frame) into their contract, as we have seen them drink and go to clubs(so I'm thinking it was 3yrs).

This song, actually isn’t about love. It’s about the 4 of them. They don’t want to leave each other. Thus the line “stay with me” because bp isn’t bp if one of them leaves. They r specially singing to Lisa and in Lisa’s rap part she replies to them and assures them that she wont leave them alone and she’ll be their fire in the dark times. Jisoo and mainly Jennie wrote these lyrics. Jennie however was never credited for writing this song, she was mistreated. She remembered all of this during a concert n started crying during her verse. Hope Not is more of a sad song and You Never Know as well. There a lot of music video story analysis in it from the start till the end. 5:07 There’s a green smoke while Lisa was rapping. Green represents hope, growth, and rebirth. I think Lisa’s scene represents the final stage: acceptance. In the other scenes of the song, Lisa was seen inside the building by herself but when her part came, she’s already outside; I think it signifies how we keep our pain to ourselves but there would come a time when we’ll finally be strong enough to let the pain out, accept everything, and welcome a new start. And in 5:36 Lisa’s aligned with the color green: hope and rebirth Jennie with orange: change and freedom Rosé with blue: faith and stability Jisoo with pink: inner peace and acceptance Basically all the colors represent the feelings after letting go. 7:53 andthe last scene shows all four girls dancing and hugging. I think this scene concretizes the feeling of freedom after letting go and accepting. There’s “I wish you were here” written under “Dance with me.” The latter message could be expressing the feeling of freedom while the former message expresses the longing. The time will come when you’d finally find the good in goodbye but it doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t be missing the person you once loved. It’s also noticeable how there are guys wearing white around them while they dance then in the next scene, it’s just the four of them dancing. White represents goodness and beginnings. I think the guys wearing white represent the goodness of every thing in the world. There’s a new beginning to look forward to. Thus, at the very last scene, the girls were genuinely laughing and dancing even though the guys weren’t there anymore; they have reached the point of new beginning.

For eg; Jennie's dating with kai had such a scandal that she was getting non stop hate from both her own fandom as well as Exo. It reached to a point they broke up because of it. When Chen of Exo announced that he is expecting a child with his gf and plans to marry her, exo fans themselves in Korea were asking him to be removed since they "betrayed" their feelings. It's messed up. Also nowadays, two idols present in a single room, the shippers keep shipping them which often creates headaches for idol
