@@MaryBaechler-r8i My late wife and were fortunate to visit “boys town” and while we were there a minister asked my wife to sing “The last rose of summer”-she was so good the minister asked her to sing it again(my wife had a wonderful voice). I’m 84 now,but it still brings a tear to my eye.

One of the most beautiful and soulful calls to love and help one another ever written and performed. I cannot NOT be moved, even after hundreds of hearings. Beautiful reaction.

Yes, I agree with you, we were all about the brotherhood of man, helping one another along the road of life, caring and sharing what we had, the hippy philosophy, peace and love!

Before he hit it big, Elton John was a session musician. He played piano on The Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."

I remember it about a guy carrying his crippled brother. "He ain't heavy"... He would say when people asked... "He's my brother." A sweet song from another era. Peace on earth.

When I was in fifth grade (I'm 60 now) I had an old sister for a teacher. Sister Jean Martin (Sister Green Martian behind her back). She never taught much, but she would speak for hours about her childhood in Nebraska living next to Father Flanigan and Boy's Town. Remember the Christmas Seals that said "He aint heavy, he's my brother.) Whenever I hear thi song, I think about Sister Jean Martin. R.I.P. Sister.

I see in my mind the image of a soldier in the Vietnam conflict, carrying a wounded fellow soldier to a helicopter standing by to carry him out. For all the vets, in any conflict, I honor you. ❤

The phrase "He ain't heavy he's....." was on a poster of a soldier carrying a wounded comrad printed during the Vietnam war.

Great song. I was 18 when I first heard them sing Bus Stop in 1967. I m 75 now . They were a great group that I still listen to. They made several good songs back in the day. You ll enjoy researching them a bit.

At the time, we took it as an exhortation to help our fellow humans, the brotherhood of man, nothing personal like a sibling. on our way along the road of life, why not share with one another.

I’m British, but I believe a lot of the Vietnamese Veterans adopted this song as an anthem?

Is there any other song that talks about how deeply men can feel for one another? How much they care for each other? How important that love is? I think that's why this song touches so many people.

That’s what is missing in songs of today. No love. Just sex and violence.

I heard the story came from “boys town”-when a boy was carrying another boy upstairs - he said “he ain’t heavy he’s my brother”

Boys Town, Omaha, Nebraska this song (IMO taken from a statue of two young boys on the property ) really hits home

The harmonica break - using only pure notes, no chords - really helps make this track. For another example of its use in this sort of way, check out the song "Mhairu", by Scottish duo Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle.

It was said he was in India and saw a little 6 year old carrying his 10 year old brother who had no legs. He talked to him and asked him if he was heavy to carry. The child said " he's not heavy, he's my brother".

The first recorded instance of this phrase was in 1884 when a book was published by a man in Scotland who came across a young girl carrying her infant brother and he asked her if she wasn't getting exhausted. She replied to him "He ain't heavy, he's my brother." Yes, this song always makes my heart churn and my eyes tear up. One of the very greatest songs ever written. Part of the Gospel in a nutshell. 😉💖💖💖

He actually sings the wrong lyrics. He sings ‘…that everyone’s heart isn’t filled with the sadness of love for one another.’ The lyric actually is ‘…that everyone’s heart isn’t filled with the GLADNESS of love for one another.’ He must have sung this song hundreds of times and just mixed up that line in this performance. 😮
