Thanks for sharing. This was so helpful. I live the idea of using the electric skillet(better than a burner and separate pot or pan) and also the salad spinner especially for home use. Can I use the spinner for yarn as well or is this for fiber only?
@rehashfiber Жыл бұрын
Yes, you sure can use the spinner for yarn. Happy dyeing. ~Shiree

Do you dye the fleece after carding it?
@rehashfiber4 ай бұрын
In this video I hadn't carded it yet. However you can dye it in any state it's in as long as it's clean. I've done it all ways; piles of wool, locks, carded (then had to re card it) and yarn. Thanks for watching. ~Shiree

Great tutorial! I love the salad spinner idea! My only caution would be to let the dyed fiber cool down naturally. I know--it puts a cramp in my enthusiasm too. Once you get going, you want to dye more right away. It's fun and exciting. But I've learned the hard way that immediately draining and rinsing wool fiber can lead to a felted mess that is unspinnable. To me, it looks like this KZbinr got really lucky and I'm curious what breed of wool she is working with. But I just wouldn't recommend that step. If you don't want to wait, then having another way to dye standing by may scratch that itch. For example, you can lay out plastic wrap and then your soaked top (commonly called roving) on top, then hand paint in a similar manner to what she is doing. When the wool looks how you want, wrap it up in the plastic wrap and fold it into a bundle then put it in a steamer basket for 20-30 minutes. Then let that cool down. Steamer baskets aren't expensive. And it's easy to thrift an old enamel (unchipped) or stainless steel pot. Just be careful to not let the water touch your plastic-wrapped parcels and also don't allow those parcels to touch the walls of the pot.

Jennifer, Thank you for the advice on letting the fiber cool off, and also for the alternative dyeing method. I'm continually learning. ~Shiree
