I guess some brands of box dye may be bad, but we can just look at reviews now. So I really dont get the issue either. I guess the main problem is that people really don’t know what they’re doing. 😂 Also alot of box hair dye brands show the end results on the box for each type of hair, so you can see if its recommended to use the dye on your hair or not. If you just do your research and read the instructions you should be fine with box dye. (And make sure that you are not allergic 🙃)

@elia_simon4 жыл бұрын
box dyes get such a bad rap and i don't know why? I think they fade a bit quicker, which honestly can be nice because your roots aren't as obvious. They are slightly cheaper, which is a bonus. They are definitely easier to use for the average person since the developer and dye is pre separated and you just have to mix them. Personally I dont see a huge difference in the quality of the dye. I also dont think they are more difficult to get out of the hair unless you are using a really dark color. I think people just like to bitch. I think Brad has mentioned not liking box dyes because they arent clear on what developer they are using but I guess I just assume they are using 20 volume. TBH that doesnt really matter that much either unless its a 40 volume, they all sort of work the same in my experience.
@kunya164 жыл бұрын
Box dyes use awful ingredients, are high in ammonia and use straight up 40 volume developer. Because they need it strong because its "one size fits all". One size fits all should be enough to not use it, but everything else added up plus you've got so many better options that you just don't need to. Sally's has so much that isn't going to fry your hair.
@faithphoenix39994 жыл бұрын
It's all marketing, person A invents a problem to sell person B a solution. It's either that or person A tells a flat out lie or exaggerates the truth a little to sell a product, for example, they say ALL box colour contains metallic salts, when it's just for men that has metallic salts, or at least the type that causes a bad reaction when mixed with hydrogen peroxide or ammonia....which funnily enough is included with a regular box kit, so why would a box kit that contains the same chemicals not have a reaction with ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, but have a reaction with salon product? Especially since in my experience there is higher levels of ammonia in box kits? I have used both salon grade and box colour, used bleach on both, and there was no difference in the bleach's ability to lift out the darker colour. Ever. Nor has my hair smoked or turned green or disintegrated like all these horror stories hairdressers like to tell customers...and that's both at home with salon grade bleach, box bleach, hairdressers, out side, inside or with a side of green eggs and ham: it's probably an old wives tale. I have been told that cheaper shampoo and conditioner is "bad" because it contains silicones and waxes...but then I compare the product their shilling to a bottle of good ol Pantene, and they are pretty much the same, just the salon brand is more concentrated than supermarket brand. The only difference between box and salon hair dye is that box colour does make my hair feel drier and box colour triggers my migraines (both probably from the higher amounts of ammonia), and you can make the dye stronger or weaker by adjusting the volume of cream developer, but if you don't need to adjust the strength and you have no issues with box colour, keep using it! They do that for the same reason why as any other company: they want your $$$. End of story. I live in Australia if that means anything as well.

There's nothing superior about salon dyes. They're all made by Loreal, Schwarzkopf, Wella and big brands anyway. You would not need to buy 3-4 box dyes to make a custom colour. You would use the same amount of dyes as you would with salon dyes. Fun fact: they all come in a box. Of course salons and hair dressers have to promote salon brands because that's how they make money. I've used both countless times and I see no difference. I know plenty of trained hair dressers that use dye from the chemist. Why would they do that if it was inferior quality? The idea that salon brands are superior is nothing more than a superiority complex people have. We live in a materialistic world run by people who are only concerned with money, that's why.

Stella, small tip for the future. Mix the dye when you already have everything prepared (changed clothes, cream on face, gloves on etc.). All the time that you do those stuff after mixing, the dye is already 'working' and it should be applied right after mixing :) Also: the second dye should be mixed after you apply the first one. It takes too long from mixing to applying. This may influence the test results.

From what I heard, box dyes are not the best route cause of the salts in them and some other things that cause re-dying the hair to always be a little different. Salon or custom you can re dye it and it won't change it each time. Plus if you wanna strip the hair colour it's harder in general to lift box dye.

the main reason, besides metallic salts, why hairdressers despise box color is because it needs to be a one size fits all color. As in it must work on the person with the thinnest hair and the most coarse hair imaginable. This leads to using 25-30 volume just for simple tints. The result of this is layers of 25-30 volume developer color put on the hair, making it borderline impossible to get out of the hair without paying a very pretty penny. Tldr: goes into the cortex more intensely than formulated professional color, making it impossible to go super light.

I think the main difference is not the look but the way it attaches to the hair, box dye acts like a stain and can be horrific to get out vs salon grade products. So I'm curious to see how both sides lift with bleach🤔 not how they fade. But what's really underneath ya know?🤔🤔 please do a follow up of maybe trying to remove the color! Even if it's just a small section from each side! I'm super curious!!😱☺️

Hmm... I have thick hair and like 10cm longer and I used that dye for all my hair. I needed even watch out to not drip cause it was much a lot. Such two would be enough for when I've had hair till my butt 🤔 and I box dye my hair myself from like 10 years already 🙈 and I must say this was the most stinky box dye I ever used and I smell it for like 3 or 4 wash. But colours are nice. I don't see a difference between both

Honestly I'm tired of this hate on box dye. Not everyone can afford a salon trip all the time. I'm a broke college student, I dye my own hair (I use arctic fox which I know is better than box dye, but it's not salon grade) cause I can afford it both time and money wise (i cant go to the salon at 9 pm but i can dye my hair in my bathroom). But I have used boxed dyes I got at target and I have had my hair bleached and dyed by a professional before. In my experience, the main difference is that the professional dye lasted a lot longer. That's it. That's the difference. I'm a natural blonde so I dont typically bleach my hair, but I when i have before it did get very dry but i just attribute that to the fact that i was 15 and literally had no idea what i was doing. BUT even with that my hair never started smoking, never turned green when I wanted pink, never broke off, I never gave myself chemical burns, I experienced none of the horror stories people love to tell so you spend $100 at the salon instead of $10 at target. Just do your research, and make sure you're not allergic or anything and you should be ok with box dye

Ok, but she like literally started with Schwarzkopf. Hahah. Like the real test would be like Lorea'l or a company that isn't a hair color authority. Also, isn't the argument against box dye is how hard it can be to remove from hair? Also, stylists are kinda left in the dark about the history of the hair because box dye has more dyes in it, and there's not a standard. It's kind of the "mystery meat" of hair color.

I also dyed my hair black with box dye for many years and i got the black to pumpkin orange by color removing it in September and gradually got it lighter and lighter. I knew it was a process but i got it done myself because a salon would charge me 200 euros or more. My hair is now white blonde and i touch up my roots with bleach every once in a while. I only have a few centimeters of orange left and the orange barely looks orange anymore. Its more golden than anything. Hairdressers shouldn’t shame anyone for trying to save money especially in this day and age with the inflation going on. I don’t shame y’all for charging a ridiculous amount of money because i know y’all need to make a living out of it.

This video was a great idea. Both sides look good. Id love to see a follow up where you strip the colour and see if they both remove as easy

I’m a bit late to the party but I’m thinking of dying my hair again, I wanted to go to a hairdresser and get it done professionally like I did when I went blonde but my social anxiety went through the roof and I’m a very awkward person and never know what to say and do so that’s a no no for me and it’s why I’ve used box dye and why I’m going to use box dye again

The way that some KZbin hairstylists talk about box hair dye is ridiculous, they make it sound like your hair will fall out

Box dye don't have nourishing ingredients... Salon dye has that.. Box dye and salon dye give the same result.. If you don't have money go for box dye if u have money go for salon

I agree box dyes get a bad rep coz they don't come out necessarily the colour you expect because of the base and previous dyes etc. This is ok if you know this will happen it will also happen with salon dyes if applied the same, also if ya buying a few salon colours to get the same outcome then also your buying multiples.

With box dye there just to many things up in the air. You don’t know how long it’s gonna stay, how long it will take to fade, most don’t tell you what developer is being used and if you have a lot of hair you’ll end up spending more money buying multiple boxes instead of one bottle of dye and one bottle of developer and the few tools you’ll need. Obviously compared to a salon it’s much cheaper but if you’re gonna do it at home just do some research and take a trip to Sally’s lol

Box dye is like fast food gives you what you want at a cheap price! But the food is low quality leads to weight gain and isn't generally good for you. Professional dye can be customised doesn't contain ingredients that weaken your hair over time and is designed in different formats.

I think the comparison about the slight difference in colour is less relevant because it's just a matter of choosing something closer to the box dye colour next time, and that versatility is the point of salon colour dye. What I would have liked to know is the long term, at least one or two weeks later.

Hey I hope someone read this comment. My ends are damaged and I cut them of. But when I colored my hair dark red after a few times I washed my hair the color is away. On my roots is the color good. Can someone tell me what can I do? 🤔 Sorry for my bad English 🙏

awesome video concept! honestly i never noticed much of a difference using box dye versus salon dye if it's permanent. it's all quite damaging tbh. reason i switched to semi-permanent only. if you're worried about damage, i would recommend a demi- or semi-permanent color over permanent regardless of where you get the dye :)
