Rebecca, omg, I am so happy!! I didn’t open my package until the end of the video. I even had my husband go to KZbin to start the video so I wouldn’t see any thumbnail spoilers 😁 This is like my perfect Chemknits video. Mixing colors, dye math, blues and teals and purples, all my faves! Plus my hubby watched with me 💗

I've been wondering about this technique, so it's so helpful to watch you try it! I've been pondering crocheting a shawl in bare wool, then dyeing the shawl in pink food coloring, before putting one end in blue and one in yellow to attempt a smooth gradient from orange to pink to purple. I'm imagining a lot of math and swatching to figure out the hues. Thank you!
@ChemKnitsTutorials2 жыл бұрын
I would play around with dipping on minis to get the ratios of the colors you want right first. I've dyed a whole shawl once - but the original plan was to unravel it, so I did things differently from how I'd dye a finished piece.

@@ChemKnitsTutorials Thanks for the tip! I'm realizing a lot of testing is needed. Thankfully I like the math too! I loved how that shawl turned out. I've been wondering if a basic scarf would be easier for this technique. And what if you dyed 80% of your skein with the base color and left it bare at either end...could it be an easy way to get a gorgeous color skein?

I would have gone for slightly more pink in the purple/blurple, but it's also gorgeous like this :D

I am so enjoying watching all your videos, Rebecca. You're so positive and curious. I've learned a lot from you. I noticed in this one that you had some trouble getting one of the dyes to exhaust: I read a while back that if you can't get an acid dye to exhaust with plenty of heat, acid, and a slow cooling time, then it was worth adding some salt--ordinary household salt--to the rewarmed solution, as the salt is more soluble than dyes, and its presence would force the rest of the dye out of solution and into the yarn. It has worked on the few times I've tried it but I do wonder if it might lead to speckling or uneven tone (both of which can be lovely!) if they dye is already a bit temperamental. Anyway, thank you again for all the work you do here to help us learn.

You know, I haven't tried salt! I try to be positive, sometimes when things don't go how I expect I get a bit confused (or even hard on myself) but I love the journey and sharing how I truly experience things - even when I struggle. :D

@@ChemKnitsTutorials as kids, in the 50's, my mom said to soak new clothes by themselves, in cold salt water, to set the colors, esp reds., blacks, and blues, because they were more likely to bleed colors in the rest of the wash.. 💖

I loved this technique & these colors! I'd think you could turn skeins like this into self-striping yarn by deliberately creating only 3 sections of color, instead of 4. They'd be pretty narrow stripes, I guess, but fun. Kinda off topic, as I forgot to leave this idea on an earlier video, but maybe you could try a color square - where you have 2 colors, on two of the sides (with maybe 3 blends in between), and then a graduated darkener (grey or black, I'd think) that goes from 0 on the top row to pretty dark (at least equal to the saturation of the pure colors) at the bottom. That would let us see how to make more muted colors and control how muted they are. Not that I don't like the brights, I do, but it's something different to learn.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I think that it wouldn't quite be self striping (even a half and half skein is maybe micro stripes or spirals depending on the pattern - but it can still be super cool) I like the idea of doing it in thirds. I think it would need to be done in 3 steps with this technique because of the ability to submerge the dyes in the containers if that makes sense. I've thought about expanding triangles into larger shapes (diamonds, even hexagons!) I believe Nicole Frost from FrostYarn has done some super large triangles in the past, but I"m not sure if she's done them with shades of black etc added.

I like how it turned out! This technique is fun. I am wondering: would it look the exact same if you worked the other way around? If you first do the dipping in yellow and pink and then put the whole hank in blue?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Likely it would. The pink might bleed in hot water though so there is a chance it would come back out and spread.

I have a hard time finding aqua yarn...how would you make a shade darker of the light aqua in this video? What mix and what dye would you use? Love your videos!
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
For a darker shade of the aqua color I would increase the amount of dye that I used. So the blue here was a 1% DOS (1 g dye / 100 g yarn) of Jacquard True Turquoise. If you went up to 1.5 g dye or 2 g of dye / 100 g then you could get it even more saturated.

Thanks, love the way it turned out. Does all yarn absorb all color, or is it more with just seven merino? Thanks.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
It depends - if you use too much dye then you can't always absorb it all. Blends of wool with acrylic might not absorb as much dye (since the acrylic doesn't bind any dye).
