This colorway is amazing one of the best things I have seen in a long time. I am so excited that I am caught up and watching videos in "real time" now and not falling in love with things you dyed 2 years ago that I can' buy any more lol. I grabbed a couple of the sock skeins (maybe even the last two?) for my stash!

Thank you so much, Christy! I have a large library of videos so I'm super impressed! :D I just finished washing all of the yarn just now and so it should (hopefully!) be dry and ready to ship in the next couple of days. I'll have to spread things out because since I'm not going to the Post office in person these days I have to make sure not to put too much in the neighborhood mailbox at once. (I may have clogged it a few times! whoops!)

Thanks for the love, Rebecca.💜 Right back at ya', as we say here in Oz. 🦘 As I was watching you video, I was doing the exact same thing. I have a market in a few weeks and one of my best selling is grey over dyed with anything. Pink, purple, blue.... the rainbow, 👍🌈

Good luck with the market!

Nice and yes, you are using warm and cool correctly. The more orangey reds are called warm reds and the more pinkey/magenta shades are called cool reds. A cool blue and a cool red make a very clean, bright purple, whereas warm reds and blues create more muddy purples. A cool blue with a warm red (or vice versa) makes a muted purple. Great colours for the 14th of Feb, seeing as it's the day Capt. James Cook discovered how serious the Hawaiian's were about the high tide mark, on his 3rd and final visit.

Also, Etsy has removed the "quantity" available from listings - you can update this in your cart. This is really strange and I'm not sure how to fix it at this time.

Not sure if you've already done this on another video - but I think it would be a cool idea to perhaps do a color swatch video comparing jaquard and dharma dyes. Probably easiest to look at their primaries, but I'd also be interested in seeing some of the similar shades, like you mentioned about the reds. I think starting them cold and then heating them up would also be helpful since we know that some dyes change color as they heat up.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I hope to do some crude swatching with color families at some point (i.e. all reds, all pinks, etc) and I'd love to compare across brands.

I love to see layering colors. This one is amazing! That fire engine red always became a gel for me. I switched to CMYK to avoid needing a red! And, you're right, the smell is weird, too.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed this smell with any other dyes that I have! After doing this re-dye I'm not sure if I will reorder this color. I'm inclined to stick with Jacquard Fire Red instead. (Although I haven't done triangle mixing with it, I'll have to check to see what other reds Dharma considers primaries.)

Hello! Your videos are so informative and I love watching them. I’m so fascinated with fiber arts and dying yarn. Can you do a video on what to look for in yarn that has been properly dyed?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, I'm not sure I understand the question. Ideally you want to see no-felting, colors that are well set (that either don't bleed at all or rinse to clear in a reasonable amount of time).

Add some urea to the colors that don’t fully dissolve. It’s amazing stuff. Beautiful colorway
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried this with acid dyes yet. Someone reminded me in the comments that there was a "bad batch" from dharma trading company that they had warnings about that it didn't dissolve well and I'm pretty sure this is what it is from.

Both Dharma and Jacquard reds gel when they start to cool. I find Greener Shades’ reds don’t. Also, try adding some acid to your rinse water (I use citric acid) to help bind the loose dye, then rinse again. I almost panicked when you dumped the blue skeins in but I love the results!
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
It's funny, I've now done multiple batches and with most I haven't had issues rinsing out the dye. (Thankfully!) A bit of acid in the rinse water did help a ton.
@kimcongdon36523 жыл бұрын
I use citric acid because my water is very basic and it just takes way too much vinegar to get it into the acidic pH range.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Citric acid powder is more potent than vinegar for sure! I think I've stuck with vinegar because it was what I started with (plus my water is a bit acidic already)

How old is your Fire Engine Red? I think you got one of those funky batch of Fire Engine Red Dharma has list a few years ago (maybe 2017 or 2018). Mine creates those same gelatinous globs. Dharma had mentioned that on their site and said that it will still dye yarn. Just a thought :) Would love to see "similar" color comparisons between Dharma and Jacquard in future videos :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
You know, it is very possible that it is part of the "bad" batch. I forgot about that warning!

Is yarn dyeing a profitable business ?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
This is a complicated question for sure. It can be profitable, but like any small business it might not be for everyone. I'm an odd person to talk about this because my business is centered around KZbin versus my Etsy shop, even though the shop is now the biggest way I'm able to support the content here. (ChemKnits is supported by ad revenue, affiliate income, Patreon, and then the Etsy shop. There may be a few other things in there, too.) If I were just running an Etsy shop alone, I would make different choices sometimes in the colorways that I would dye - focus on some more collections versus pushing myself to try new things. My model is different than a lot of other dyers, too, since I show how the yarn is dyed and share my recipes. The advice I can give is about pricing out your yarn. Make sure you consider all of your costs of dyeing the yarn (yarn, dyes, gloves, water, utilities), packaging (labels, bags, shipping containers), equipment (it is hard to predict the lifetime of a pan, but you should consider replacement needs), and then finally time. After all of that, there is the profit. I tend to not consider my time in my pricing model, but I do look at the margins and consider if that it worth my time for the technique. Anyway, I hope these thoughts help some if this is something you're considering perusing. if you have other questions or thoughts - let me know! I don't always see replies to comments, so if I don't respond to a question just start a new thread and I will be able to find it easier.
