Ranking All Cheating Methods In The Chunin Exams Written Test

The Chunin Exams Written Test was a great part of the Naruto series. In this video we will rank all cheating methods used by the genins in the test. Including Sasuke's Sharingan, Neji's Byakugan, Dosu and his hearing ability, Kiba and Akamaru barking answers, Shino and his insects, Ino and the Mind Transfer Jutsu, as well as Tenten and the mirrors on the ceiling.
Let's analyze which methods were more inconspicuous and more efficient at gathering intel. In the end of the day answering the first 9 questions right wasn't that important. Naruto didn't answer a single question but still passed the the written exam. But, Ibiki used this method to eleminate genins that were unable to use stealth and gather intel.

Presumably, everyone in the room knew about the mirrors and strings. They were gonna pass or fail her based on her commitment to the bit. She passed because she actually did all that with a straight face as if nobody saw her. A test of her ninja poker face. lol

Plus there was a strike system where you have to be caught multiple times to be kicked out, which was a big clue that they were meant to cheat. Tenten could have gotten striked and it wouldn't matter, that doesn't remove the mirror from the ceiling.

there is a big difference how it was shown in the manga and in the anime. And in the manga its actually pretty hidden. U cant see those small mirrors behind the ceiling or from the side. In the anime they just... much bigger and just... there. Why.

Naruto didn’t cheat out of confusion and fear. Sakura didn’t cheat because she didn’t need to. Really the true art of a ninja is tricking the enemy into thinking you know what you’re doing. She tricked the proctor into thinking she was cheating inconspicuously when she just had the answers. Naruto on the other hand panicked worse I did on a biology final with the same results I got.

Ten Ten’s cheating is absolutely fantastic. But, I cannot overlook Sakura using HER own brain. She didn’t cheat ONCE using her own intellect to overcome this. Think about it, when you are cheating who do you piggy back off of? The smartest one. Ino’s strategy of using her Mind transfer and then studying Sakura’s answers is honestly kinda big brained.

​@user-nd6kj8yp8u Most of the characters in that room had spent the majority of their free time practising their combat skills and chakra-based powers. Sakura, being naturally fairly weak, had spent more time studying than probably anyone else in the room (even Shikamaru likely studied less, although in part because he'd grasp the concepts faster and in part because of laziness). I wouldn't say she was the smartest, specifically because of Shikamaru, but she was definitely the hardest working academically, and Ino could clearly see that for herself.

Not only did Sakura show that she could answer honestly here, she was consistently shown to be able to master non academic concepts quicker than people considered prodigies. Look at how quickly she mastered chakra control compared to Naruto and Sasuke. And later her ability to break out of Genjutsus that an entire stadium of people weren't able to do or notice. I am not a Sakura fan, but while her intellect may not be considered genius level, it is certainly up there and simply studying would not have allowed her fellow classmates to get the answers correctly. She even herself acknowledges that the questions are way too difficult, there is no manga canon in which they even acknowledge she got all the answers correct

It's not about being "creative", it's about how effective the method would be in actual missions. Sure having your dog in the middle of a quiet room is obvious, but in an actual mission, sending a cute puppy to spy and then come back and tell you the details is very effective. Same for most other methods, even Tentens of manipulating mirrors to view what is happening, can also work. If you consider that, then you realize why this ninjas pass.

@@robertharris6092 The proctors weren’t their to find cheaters, they were their to find good Shinobi, it was just to see how these kids went about gathering information and if their methods could be used well in the field. If they just needed to find cheaters they wouldn’t have let Kankuro continue nor would they have literally designed the test with cheating in mind, they placed 3 “genin” who knew the answers around the room specifically to be copied off of.

RE: Tenten's cheating method. The proctors actually noticed **all** of the cheating methods. It's heavily implied that what they were looking for was either ingenuity in intel gathering, subtlety in method, or decent obfuscation of cheating. Gaara very clearly uses a Jutsu, as does Ino, Neiji's Byakugan changes the way he looks drastically, The Sharingan Changes when he uses it to get the answers from another student, Kiba is **talking to his dog** during the exam, etc etc. The methods of cheating are noticed and permitted because they are not obvious signs of cheating in the way that someone else might see them. They are shinobi using their ninja skills to gather intelligence in a smart and direct manner.

I always got the sense theres an element that the proctors were judging certain cheating methods by how effective theyd be in the field not necessarily a class room. There are obviously various forms of intelligence and different ninja will be better suited for those types. For instance Kankuro using Crow obviously wouldnt work for the classroom but could work for a low scale infiltration of an enemy strong hold, the example Ibiki uses at the end of the exam. In the Sasuke retrieval arc Shikamaru strategically places Neji and Kiba at the back and front of the platoon lines to account for their differences in Skills. Kiba using his sense of smell to lead the way and sniff for traps and Neji to account for blind spots in the formation. Obviously other methods of cheating like Inos would be less noticeable on a mission where the squad is several feet away and therefore more valuable in gathering intelligence than they would be in the classroom setting. I think it was definitely more of a "would this work on a mission" type scale than it was actually getting caught

Also thanks to Shino weearing sunglasses you can't really trace his eye movements. If he was closely watching these bugs then he might have looked more suspicious, but they can't really see the eye movements with the sunglasses.

Dosu's cheating method is the best because it's basically impossible to detect or prove. Dude literally figured out what a person was writing based on the sound of their pencil on the paper. Unless one of the protectors is telepathic and can read his mind there is zero chance they wouldn't notice.

The number of strokes is kinda set in stone and one way of looking up words in dictionary is precisely by checking how much strokes a word has. So its much more doable with that in mind when compared to english where hand writing can vary strokes wildy.

to my knowledge she did the same as Sakura, shes the Heiress of the Clan and has had Tutors since she was born she's probably the most educated among all of the Kids by a long mile. Sakura is just smart. Shino's is definitely the best method to collect information the sound guy's is unreliable and still requires him to use Chakra to enhance his hearing while Shino's bugs don't need Chakra to exist and inform him. He should be #1.

I would actually put Shino on spot one, because the perfect cheating methode actually has to do more than being undetectable and reliable. Dosu and Sakura both had the problem that they couldn't communicate their answers to their team maktes. Yes, the insect was more detectable than Dosu's and Sakura's methode, but had it been necessary, the fly could have also flown to his team mates and communicated the answers to them. They know their team mate uses insects so they would likely recognise it and realise what the fly is trying to tell them. So while Shino might not get 100% in reliabilty and stealthiness, Dosu and Sakura get 0 points in communication.

With how small Shino's bugs are, I think his would be one of the best abilities for Intel gathering, the leaf ninjas would know about the aburame clan and their use of insects, but anyone else outside of the leaf? I don't think so. Shino's bugs are small enough that if he sends a single bug to spy on maybe two people's conversation, he would manage to get info without being detected, because no one would be able to notice one small bug, and if they do, they won't really care about it. A big herd of bugs might be a bit more suspicious tho. And he also has all sorts of bugs, poisonous and dangerous, it's a very useful ability. But I don't know about communication tho, I don't think kiba and hinata can understand the bugs, so it would only work if the test is multiple choice questions, so the bugs can just land on the answers. If it was one word answers or big answers, the bugs won't be able to answer them.

I don't think Ino memorising the answers is a problem (the rest definitely is). Think about it - the Yamanaka Mind Transfer Jutsu is basically custom made for gathering Intel. I would be shocked if Yamanaka shinobi are NOT drilled on quick memorisation from childhood. She would definitely have a system for quickly remembering information.

At least both Shikamaru and Sakura are smart enough not to use their special abilities to cheat unlike like Sasuke who copied the person in front of him, Ino who possessed Sakura’s body to cheat off of her, Kiba who used his dog to bark the answers which could have gotten him thrown out, Shinto who used his bugs to find any answer that’s more logical, Neji who used his Byakkugan like an X-ray to see the answers of the person in front of him, Ten Ten who used her mirrored to help Lee cheat off of her, Kankuro who used his puppet to gather info or Gaara, who used his sand eye to copy off anyone’s answer.

Tenten's method was actually really good. You see, she got caught the moment she set up the mirrors, but that was only a two point deduction. She then kept using that one cheating method for the rest of the exam, so the proctors couldn't deduct any further points from her.

I believe he has to enhance his hearing with Chakra control which is very skilled of him to do for sure but its still unreliable for gathering information compared to Shino's bugs which are not Chakra enhanced in this state no way to detect it unless you're just paranoid and kill all bugs which the proctors could do since they know his clan exists but in a normal intel gathering situation which what this test was trying to simulate Shino's method is definitely #1.

A lot of people fail to realize that just because a team wasn’t disqualified doesn’t mean they weren’t caught cheating by the proctors.Ten Ten’s mirrors for example very well could have been noticed, but Neji’s and Lee’s methods weren’t noticed, therefore they didn’t rack up enough points to be disqualified. Just like Ino could have been caught using her jutsu, but because she was the sole member of her team that cheated to get the answers, they too, didn’t rack up enough points to get disqualified. Your team basically had 5 attempts to cheat before getting eliminated.

The issue with Shino was that the answers to the questions were like a paragraph long (we could see it on someone's paper), and I clearly remember Shino's bug relaying info. It was flying in the shape of an 8 multiple times, and Shino's thoughts went like: So it is 8... Bruh. It was not some magic code language, it was about the most inefficient transfer of information you can imagine. That paragraph is going to take a long ass time to write that way.

I'd say that 100 characters per answer is a generous minimum (your comment is 38 characters for comparison). They only had 9 questions to have to cheat, which is about 900 characters. Let's say that the bug can convey a character in 5 seconds, which is (again) were generous based on what we so, and that's assuming the bug has some very impressive memory so it doesn't have to go back and forth a lot 100*9*5 = 4500 seconds 4500/60 = 75 minutes And then we also assumed that he didn't need to thing for a moment what to do in the beginning even though he at least had to read those long ass questions, then decide he should cheat, then somehow find someone with proper answers, not some half assed attempt to answer (the bug won't know that, Shino will know it after taking a bunch of time writing at least a sentence or so) So yeah, even if we're very generous, it's quite a stretch (again, this comment is 1176 characters, so it'd take even more time for him to copy even though this is nowhere near enough to answer 9 hard questions)

I figure the whole "If we catch you cheating, we'll knock off points" was further misdirection. The idea that some Genin/Chunin level ninja could cheat in front of Jonin level ninja without being caught is absurd. Most likely the proctors had a guideline like "If they would be caught by normal people or other Genin, count it". Which is why the like of Ten-Ten and Kankuro were able to cheat without losing points. No normal person or Genin would catch them.

It didnt matter if it was obvious as long as it worked, where as if you cheat in an easy way like showing your answers to the person beside you, it would be lazy and that would likely be the bad cheating.

I don't know why, but I always remembered Shikamaru Shadow Possessing Choji and Ino and making them copy his answers because he was smart enough to answer the questions without cheating. It's definitely a lot more subtle and reliable than Ino both being unnoticed with her possession, and lucking out and finding someone who answered the questions correctly.

I think a lot of you forget the rules of this exam, you can cheat and getting caught, but you have 5 chances. The proctor knew Kankuro go to the toilet with the dolls, but they allowed Kankuro to continues because he only caught once. So, Tenten plans is good, even if the proctor knew, she only getting caught once but able to transfer the information to Lee, it is the most effective method for both of them without spend the rest of the chances. Note : Gaara, Kiba, Sasuke and Neji is also obvious, especially the last 3 is the most famous klan in Konoha, of course the proctor will notice, but doesnt matter, they only caught once.

To clarify; There are two criteria for a good cheating/intel gathering method 1) inconspicuousness-> can it be done without being noticed. if your method goes unnoticed; you don't lose any points. 2)efficiency-> we can assume that they're being docked points for each noticed instance, which means that if you can get all of the answers in one go; you'd only lose two points, and you'd still pass.

I feel like the proctors approached the cheating methods of the leaf kids like they would if they just didn't know their abilities, and it makes sense because they're testing how they'd collect intel from the enemy, who often times would be ignorant to that sort of thing. For example, a leaf villager might see Ino and think 'Oh hey, the mind transfer jutsu' whereas an outsider would think 'Oh look at this sleepy bitch, Frank.... Frank, why do you have a knife?'

Yeah, that and Shino seemed to be leagues above the others in terms of reliability. Being able to copy someone's movements or listen to their writing only works if you can find someone who is writing the answer you need at that time, and you're limited even further by not being able to compare that person's answer to someone else's. Neji and Shino both were able to look at all the answers from all the students at any time, so they could just choose to find an answer they liked for every single question.

Ino comes from a clan specializing in the mind. Either she has a technique to memorize, or she just has a lot of training for such things and probably also the benefits of many generations of selective breeding for traits that improve the use of mind techniques. Sakura wouldn't have been able to get Ino caught because no one would have a reason to believe her claims. Ino might also have been able to erase Sakura's short-term memory of the possession or it might do that as part of the techniques normal function.

Just here to notice, Naruto could have cheated the same way Kankuro did. Use a shadow clone (instead of marionete), combined with transformation jutsu, made the clone find the answer, get them back by releasing the jutsu. Actually might be a bit better, since there wouldn't be any Chakra wires to link the evidence back to himself. The issue would be that, somehow we find out about the sharing of experience trick from Kakashi in Shippuden. No sure how could Naruto miss something like this for like 4 years, but it was a quick probably added later on to explain and help the MC to develop that jutsu that was supposed to be beyond 4th hokage while he was still a teenager.

About Naruto not realizing the shared experience of the clones: if I remember correctly, before Kakashi's training, he straight up says he thought the pain and exhaustion he received from his clones when they were dispelled is because the jutsu is just very tiring, especially in the middle of combat. Also, he never lets a clone get too far away from him, they're always in the area: the first time a clone is not within eyesight is when he trains with Kakshi. I don't know if he just never thought of that or he always assumed that for the jutsu to work, the clones had to be close to the caster, but for the entirety of Naruto and first half of Shippuden, he only uses the clones for combat, soccer and playing card games

Personally I think the proctors were showing konoha genin favoritism. Keep in mind the chunin exams are actually advertisements for clients. This is konoha's best chance to keep their competition from being able to show their good ads. They extended the same courtesy to the sand because they are allies, every other village they are deducting points for sneezing. Also shikamaru had his own method called reverse shadow possession, basically he used his shadow to bind someone and instead of restring him shikamaru just let the guy move and copy his movements.

Things ninjas would do Akamaru & Shino's bugs are great because bugs are so commonplace and not many are gonna suspect a cute puppy ♡ Sakura may have had the best method in just knowing the answers but thats not a way to gather intel in the field or communicate it to her teammates. Shino could if need be and even if obvious, TenTen's method of gsthering info worked. Thats that they were looking for in the end: how well their ideas could work in gathering intel

That's probably not the requirement, though. We already know the test instructions were misdirection. Why would you assume that the guideline for losing points are accurate? Most likely the proctors defaulted to "Would this get past a normal person or Genin" when deciding whether someone was caught cheating. I doubt even Gaara or Sasuke's cheating methods went unnoticed. But they wouldn't get caught by most people.

You lose two points for the cheating method being spotted. You are allowed to be spotted once or twice. Lets assume every time you take over a body they deduct points. 1 for getting answers 3 for giving them. You have 2 left, your team answer 100%. Thats 22/30 which is 73% overall. The same as everyone getting 73% individually. So its probably very good. It doesn’t matter if you’re caught, what matters is how many points you can get for the least deductions overall

He was just copying Sasuke at first when it comes to the naruto barrage. By season 3 he can execute it by himself and with clones he can even make it more devastating. He used clones to manipulate rasengan but even in Shipuuden he can actually do it without a clone, he's just more comfortable with a clone doing it for him and eventually it led to him developing rasenshuriken. Probably his perfect chakra manipulation, which surpassed Jiraiya and Minato at the age of 17, came from all the experiences the dispelled clones brought back to him.

Even Kakashi only teaches the team the basics before focusing all his time on Sasuke. Naruto's biggest jumps in ability happen when he is actively being mentored by Jiraiya or from his outside-the-box thinking, such as using his clones to make up for areas he isn't good at himself (chakra manipulation and tiajutsu).

Honestly this exam was such an important part to the series. It made it feel like a “ninja” series, instead of another Kaiju/Explosion/Powerlevel series. And readers actually felt like Naruto could actually fail, because he actually did. It’s just so many series takes characters who “aren’t talented” but only put them in situations where they will succeed, which just gets boring imo. Kishimoto should have been given more free reign. He had intended to make more missions but was forced by his corporate overlords to accelerate things with the Chuunin Exams, basically skipping the character development and growth he wanted to create. I think Naruto should have and probably would have focused much more on creating tension for the audience through less combat and more intrigue and mind over sheer power on missions. It would be both more true to real shinobi (who spent most of their work on non-violent tasks) and, perhaps more importantly, could be easily enhanced with chakra in ways beyond what was available to real ninja.

I alwats wondered that because everyone generally loved the chunin exams for how detailed, tactical, philosophical and them actually acting like ninja in training was compared to the later series where its all just thrown out for powers. The tone of the anime is very different up until the Sasuke retrieval arc.

The early part of the Chuunin exams was my favorite arc in the whole series because of the written test and the Forest of Death. But once the test format changed to not one but two tournaments, it fell apart even despite some of the fights being genuinely cool. Up until then, participants would have to be whole teams, as Kakashi explained before Team 7 went into the exam room, and the written test would pass or fail the whole team instead of just one or two members. But now the tournaments were splitting them all apart. After Shikamaru was the only genin to make chuunin, how would Ino and Chouji get to take the test the next time? There was a filler arc that tried to answer this, but it was quite underwhelming. It's a shame that this tone shift was likely the result of the editor making Kishimoto switch to a more cookie cutter shonen.

The proctors definitely noticed all the cheating and it's possible everyone did get marked down. You could get caught 4 times and still pass, and they'd only announce you were caught on the 5th when you were kicked out. Most of the genin only use their methods once (as long as they count one jutsu to be one instance of cheating) except for Ino who possessed 3 different bodies. Hell, Naruto even looks at Hinatas test a few times and could've gotten marked down for it. While story wise it's almost definitely that the test was more about how they gathered their intelligence and it's subtlety/originality and they were passed based on that, but it could just be that they weren't caught cheating the 5 total times

I think the proctors probably knew what Sasuke and the Hyuugas would do. They have a built-in cheating system. But someone who isn't from the Leaf Village wouldn't even know to look for Sasuke's red eyes or Neji's veins, so it probably wouldn't be fair for them to deduct points from them for it. It would be inconspicuous for anyone who didn't know them.

Dygo, you forgot one thing. In this exam you can cheat multiple times. Kankuro only cheated once, so is fair game. Tentei and Rock lee only looked at the mirror once for all answers (ok maybe not) so they cheatred only once as well. If it was me, I would big cheat one single time; unfortunately I wouldn't have the memory for all this. Also, Akamaru is just barking, there is no way this is a secret language of it's owner/dog, are you into conspiracy theory chunnin examinor?

In real life, the enemy would be annoyed by a dog barking. In the exam, a proctor should have noticed as well. Cheating = information collecting. You don't want to be obvious about it or else the enemy will feed you false information.

Even Ino would got only three out of five strikes (one when possessing sakura, then one each for Shikamaru and Chouji). Also one thing to keep in mind is that they theorically didnt get any "luck" on the test, since it's said the instructors actually put them on positions where they could take the info to begging with (even going as far as having multiple fake genins to facilitate the gathering of the right answers). Ino, Sasuke and all those "would be screwed if in the first row" probably werent there because the examiners didnt want they being completelly useless.

@@albertonishiyama1980 Ino gets caught three times and that's -6 points for Ino, -6 points for Choji, and -6 points for Shikamaru as well. That's a massive fall. Even just one mistake is actually -2 for the whole team, so it can end up snowballing quickly.

My favorite aspect of this is that the proctors hid infiltrated students that had all the correct answers for everyone else to copy. While question 10 had a nice speech from Ibiki (great character), it was also a copout to make Naruto pass, kind of an easy way out for Kishimoto there

I believe the proctors DID see a lot of the cheating methods and if they thought the method was lame, they’d give points and if they thought the method was worthy. They let it pass. And as for TenTen. I agree, they were just so impressed that anyone would use such a method. They let it slide

@@velvetbutterfly Math is also about knowledge. You have to do some calcul, but you need to know the formulas and how to perform them. As for anything about trajectories, the level of knowledge needed is far above what children their age are supposed to know.

Another thing bout Sasuke's cheating method: Because he is copying exactly what another person writes, his writing style will match the other person exactly as the other person is writing, which is a literal copy paste printer and is identical. That would be sus.

I'm pretty sure something that they specify during the exam is that they only deduct points for *obvious* cheating methods. So most visual jutsu where you just need to look at your target are actually very subtle and wouldn't get many, if any points taken away. Not to mention, for the Leaf Village kids, they aren't going to be spying on the Leaf. So them getting caught by Leaf proctors using Leaf exclusive techniques also wouldn't really be considered "obvious" since other villages wouldn't recognize a lot of the initial signs unless they have prior experience. Besides, the room is literally shown to be lined wall to wall with proctors, nothing is going to escape every proctors gaze, it would have to be selective in who gets marked otherwise only Naruto would have passed

Since the proctors are more skilled than the students, I think it makes sense that they'd have some set threshold below which they wouldn't penalize the cheating. Like, as long as the students didn't cheat in a way that would be obvious to a normal (non-ninja) person, they'd let it slide.

At a certain point you gotta assume the clan kids all do the same thing nearly every year. Any Uchiha with a sharingan is going to use it, the Inuzuka are going to use their dogs, the Hyuuga will use their bakuygan, etc. So they'd 100% know what to look for (village specific) as long as it wasn't done obviously they’ll be fine. (Also if a clan member is one of the proctors, they'd be able to figure out their clanmate... like an Aburame would notice the bugs for sure/know what's up).

In my own head canon: Lee, Neji, and Tenten are the oldest of the Konoha 11. Remember, Gai sensei held them back for one year before recommending them to take the Chunin exam. So, perhaps they were more ready than we thought and they prepared certain measures in advance, like the ceiling mirrors, for different scenarios.
