Blues fan watching live in STL, you are prolific and timely with your analysis. Initially thought puck hit collar bone or bottom of shoulder pad as it went straight down. Your slow-mo shows it did hit higher up on side of neck. He initially seemed unfazed and carried puck other way with his usual speed. I was thinking with the delayed reaction it was probably vascular, maybe a damaged jugular that started leaking and blood started pooling. Then he gave the stinger or pinched nerve type of head motion which I didn’t think was possible in this situation. Your skeletal man 2:45 illustrated exactly what prob happened.

Follow up the next day is that it impacted his vagus nerve. He immediately knew something was wrong but saw a chance to possibly score so he didn’t immediately go to the bench. But once he did, things got fuzzy and he can’t really remember what happened. Was told no active for 24 hours then if all is well, he’s good. This happened Tuesday night and he plans on playing Thursday Another note: that head athletic trainer is Ray Barile and he’s been with the team since 1995. He’s seen some stuff, including 2 cardiac events

Would a neck guard have done anything to help prevent the severity of an injury here? I know they've been becoming more popular in the NHL (mandatory in the AHL) since the death of Adam Johnson after a skate cut his throat unfortunately. I doubt it would help since they are made for something else, but I was just curious

Good thing he's OK! Not the same spot/ injury for me but, as someone that used to play a lot of hockey when I was younger I can really appreciate the danger of getting hit in the neck. I see most kids now wearing neck protection, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to wear them as adults too, anyhow not here to preach... So about 20yrs ago we had a real good group of guys we rented the ice and played once a week together. All ex-pro, college, junior A players we weren't the nhl but, the hockey was fast and a good fun game. One night a guy that had an absolute cannon tee'd one up through a screen that I never saw. Luckily, it hit my neck dangle, but so hard it shattered into pieces. After obliterating that throat guard it hit me just to the side of my throat. Not only did it scare the living hell out of me, I was hurtin pretty good and either the puck or a now sharpened edge of my busted plastic dangle cut me pretty good too. The ER Dr that checked me out afterwards told me anymore to the side it could've crushed my larynx and killed me. Curious I went online to see if I could find any info on hockey players getting killed by pucks to the neck. Turns out in 2005 (approximately when it happened) that getting hit in the throat/ neck was the #2 killer of amateur hockey players at the time. I'm pretty sure that bodycount covered pucks and skates but, still pretty scary. Oh and for the morbidly curious out there the #1 killer of amateur hockey players back then (and I'm sure still is today) was heart attacks.

@harv8317 күн бұрын
Definitely bp/vascular related. If it was a stinger, he would have immediately reacted to the electrical-like jolt down his arm. I wonder if the delay in his symptoms also related to some kind of rapid onset of swelling (ruptured blood vessel?), compressing structures on the right side. Side flexing to that side would provide slack to those soft tissues and let them stretch out

I have a question for you. As the puck impacted the vascular network in that area and the momentary increase in pressure is realized by baroreceptors, could there be prolonged swelling due to injury that both decreased blood flow to the brain and increased the pressure due to the resulting decrease in lumen size? Also, I've read about a different condition, aortic distension. Is it possible that other arteries like the internal jugular become distended reducing pressure and blood flow? Would really appreciate and answer, thank you so much.

Prayers from Bruins nation. The look on his face before he went on the stretcher was terrifying. He did not put his arm up with a thumb's up for his home crowd, and that concerns me the most. I feel that it is not a nerve injury, and it looks like a cardiovascular problem. There is not enough blood getting to his brain, and you can see that clearly because his eyes are wide open and he has a vapid stare. Hopefully the blood pressure is normalized by now.
