I honor the first Snow Day we have in our little village in the PNW (US). This recording for me goes all the way back to 1979 and an older teacher who came on the scene for some reason right in mid semester. Likely out of some sense of desperation, she introduced this to some of her classes. She trusted me with her LP to take it home and record 3 cassettes. I was honored and made one for myself. So popular it was that a sort of stage production of it was made and it was a huge success with only a cast of 9 students who stepped forward to participate. Thanks to that old(er) teacher who came into our young lives later in her career. It was likely the greatest blessing from my high school years.

Memories of Christmas Eve's gone by, when my Stepfather would read this to an ever growing captive audience, of children, stepchildren, and grandchildren.....year after year. We've never said the word "snowman" the same way since. I wish I could have my whole family together again, listening to my stepfather read "A Child's Christmas in Wales". I believe he did Dylan Thomas proud.

I was in my mother's womb, a few miles north on this same day (02/22/1952), and could hear this being spoken thru my spirit. I remember hearing the speaker saying the words "Jim", because my older brothers name was the same. The word "fireman" kept echoing also, and it was snowing. I asked the Spirit that sang to me, what the light tinkling sound was, and he spoke the word: "snow". Chilly, humid, the sound of the man speaking in a voice I will always remember. "Tin soldiers".

Wow. Awesome. I love this story One sentence, 86 words: Years and years ago, when I was a boy, when there were wolves in Wales, and birds the color of red-flannel petticoats whisked past the harp-shaped hills, when we sang and wallowed all night and day in caves that smelt like Sunday afternoons in damp front farmhouse parlors, and we chased, with the jawbones of deacons, the English and the bears, before the motor car, before the wheel, before the duchess-faced horse, when we rode the daft and happy hills bareback, it snowed and it snowed. And I had a vest like that from an aunt like that.

This recording came into my own personal history of Christmas when my father used to record on cassette, the weekend broadcasts by Max Ferguson on CBC Radio in the early 80's. My parents had the LP, and played it on many Christmasses. It is like "A Christmas Story" for an older generation, but while I adore Jean Shepherd, Dylan Thomas' voice is so wonderful it is painful. PBS ran a very nice live-action dramatization which used this recording as the narration.
